I understand about viewing angle.Is there a preference to mounting a dome camera by the front door?Either to one side or directly above? Or it really doesn't matter since you can adjust the camera angle?

I don't like mounting a camera directly above a doorway simply because all you get is the subject's head or top of their baseball cap in the picture. Instead, I go with a two camera setup placed so that the subject is viewed from the sides in a crisscross fashion.
