Best type of crimpable BNC connector?

   ( >> )
RichTJ99 - 18 Jan 2006, 01:03 am
Hi,

I purchased a 1000 feet of siamese cable & tonight I got to experience first hand crappy cables with crappy adapters. So, when I do the crimping, I am using this kit: http://www.tequipment.net/Ideal33-303.asp?OVRAW=ideal%2033-303&OVKEY=ideal%2033%20303&OVMTC=standard

I want to get a nice BNC connector so the video feed isnt messy.

Could someone suggest a place to get them or what I should be looking for (gold plated, etc)?

Thanks,
Rich

I just use Twist on BNC Connectors, nothing special. Its more important to use good wire, good cameras, and make sure the connection is done properly.

I also use Twist on BNC connectors and I send all my DIY customers out with the Twist on BNC connectors. Plus they are really easy to put on!

I can attest to the simplicity of using the twist on type as well.

I am glad I didn’t bother with compression or crimp types.

More tools and more ways to screw up, but it is a personal choice.

There is a whole long thread that talks about this subject, but I think you will come to the same conclusion.

Use the twist on type, they work and there easy to work with.

And you can find twist on types all over the place.

stick with crimping or compression....just my opinion.
kandcorp - 18 Jan 2006, 09:36 am
I usually stick with crimp on, but if done properly twist on BNC's work just as well. If you already have the kit you might as well use the Crimp Style BNC's.

Good company:

OK, here we go again. :D

Here is a link with several different ideas on the subject.

i would recommend the GEM line of connectors.
for RG59 they have a very nice "crimp on"
look at this one
UNIVERSAL CONNECTOR
301-00

For RG59 we use Gem 305-10 and Aim Electronics 27-9100. In my opinion nothing beats a good 3 piece crimp on.
rory - 18 Jan 2006, 01:08 pm
Except a decent properly installed Twist-on

I feel like I have been through this once before.
G-MEN - 18 Jan 2006, 01:33 pm
The problem we had with twist ons is some installers would use RG59 twist ons for plenum and vise versa and a lot of our problems traced back to bad BNC connections. Don't get me wrong a secure twist on BNC works perfectly, a lazy installer on the other hand....
rory - 18 Jan 2006, 01:35 pm
thats the problem, with all connectors, its up to the installer .. and cable used, also the quality of the connector, i cant use the Twist ons they sell at the electrical store here, they come out of the socket when you twist them tight, so I only use them in an emergency, otherwise i get them all from the US distributors.
blowrabbit - 24 Jan 2006, 04:14 am
i have found the best test of a connection is try to pull it off of the cable. if it moves at all its a bad connection if it stays its good. being a sophmore to this bussiness i now use the waterproof compression connectors at $1.50 a piece but they are bullit proof.
Neutech - 25 Jan 2006, 11:17 am
crimp all the way for me

i also solder the centre pin on them as the crimp quality on some centres is bad to say the least

fed up going to installs by other co's using cheap twist on or crimps that they've done with a set of pliers or their teeth
rory - 25 Jan 2006, 11:25 am
I gotta clear this up one last time, there are cheap Twist ons, and there are Good Twist ons, for those that havent used them yet ..
securitymonster - 25 Jan 2006, 11:41 am
Now you can see that there is no "Best" type of BNC connector. It all comes down to favorites. I've used BNC, Crimp, 2-piece Crimp, etc.... I like twist on as they are easy and if done right, they work just fine!

My suggestion would be to try and test in the following order until you like what you've found:

Twist On
1 Piece Crimp
2 Piece Crimp
3 Piece Crimp
Compression

The reason they are in that order is because thats generally ascending order of cost per connector, not to mention tools needed.

I don't use pliers for twisting them on. Just by hand.

I only use my teeth to assist the cable stripping process. :D

Jasper and Rory....are they the same person?

Lets look at the facts shall we?

Both use Twist Ons.

Both will use thier teeth to strip wire.

Both like Beer.

Both are Human.

I leave this for the reader to decide but clearly it's not just random chance that they have so much in common.

[Edit: Cause I don't speak english so good.]

man, just the 24/7 nuked food and budwieser is what I want

I've used twist-ons with pretty good results. Like Rory said, some are junk and some are decent. They're nice to have in a pinch, too!

My main complaint is the twisting process itself. I only use my hands to twist them on/off; I never use pliars or a wrench (too much torque). Problem is, after doing 10-15 of them, it really starts to wear on the fingers.

Since I've heard so many good things about compression fittings, what are some of your favorite brands for connectors and the compression tool? Something easy to use and reliable...
JMANOFNVS - 26 Jan 2006, 12:05 am
I have tried all of them but compression. First was twist, it took me longer to cut the wire right then it did to twist it on good, I suppose it was because used a pocket knife and teeth for center, took me at least 10 tries to get a good 2 piece down, screw the 3 and 4 piece, but I have customers who swear by them. When I got my high speed cable installed I was amazed and how fast the tech put those compressions on, he made me a 75 ft cable and 10 ft cable so I could fish it to my TV from outside my garage(for some dumb reason dish network does fish cable or even go into a crawl space)into my front room, so I tried to double fish my satalite tv cable to avoid having to get in to my attic(if you could call it that, in July 110 degrees outside) to run the cable and it snaged, but didn't break loose. So I have to go with compression all the way for speed and strength. They do cost more though. Oh ya and GEM does have a great selection as well as great pricing and support.
Jasper - 26 Jan 2006, 01:04 am
Same experience with the Cable guy.

Two piece fitting. Blam! it was done quick and looked great.
JMANOFNVS - 26 Jan 2006, 01:15 am
It took me awhile to remember to put the jacket on before stripping and of coarse this was before I found out you can get a stripper that does it all at one time. Oh yeah and thate not counting my first time to the mustang ranch. This guy had some compression tool I still have yet to find.. maybe somebody has seen it. At the bottom he stuck the cable in to strip it ready and then stuck it the top which he slipped a comp bnc in while stripping the wire and squeezed it ...done. I have seen all in one tools but not as smooth.
Bob - 04 Feb 2006, 05:01 pm
WOW! I really thought that some of the members would be using crimp connectors. I'm suprised.

We use Crimps all the way.
Doug - 04 Feb 2006, 06:50 pm
In my opinion, the four choices, in order of preference would be

Three piece BNC crimp on
Two piece BNC crimp on
Electrical tape and chewing gum
One piece BNC twist on

i guess some of us need some more practice with twist ons hey
JMANOFNVS - 04 Feb 2006, 11:15 pm
Have any of you tried a one piece crimp???
