CCD Size --- 1/4-inch Vs 1/3-inch

Is there a preference for one of those CCD sizes over the other or does it really matter? What is the performance difference, if any?

Thanks!

Smaller ccd sizes are usually less light sensitive, so larger is usually better (obviously a old half inch will probably not be as good as a modern quarter inch, due to techy improvements, but like for like, the bigger the better).

Lenses get more expensive the larger the ccd usually, as quality should improve.

Thanks, Kensplace. The PTZ dome I started looking at first is a 1/4-in sensor (Pelco Spectra IIIse).

Oh, and sorry about that whole Beckham thing. We'll get him (and that Spice critter thingy) back to you shortly. :D

Usually you'll find manufacturers use 1/4" sensors in speed domes so that they can reduce the overall length of the lens... bigger sensor = longer zoom lens.

Thanks, BurstElement (what a name! :) ) That is exactly where my question originates from, looking at speed domes.

You can even find some Sony Modules with 1.6" Chips.
