Um, which Unix flavor?

HP-UX,AIX,Solaris,*BSD,Minix,Linux,Irix,SCO Unix, or a flavor of Linux?

Avermedia do linux systems, we used them a few years ago but had bad networking problems with them. The systems themselves were stable as stand alone, there are a couple still running in local libraries where they didn't want the networking.
I think they have sorted the networking problem out now ?
Go to www.avermedia.com.tw or e-mail this lady Grace Chang

Free flavor ;)
*BSD or whatever
i just dont feel like paying $$$ (and lots of it) to uncle Bill
*nix system might be much harder to set up for a first time but i guess i'll handle it

Then you want Linux. *BSDs are not newbie friendly, and the hardware support is a bit poorer. What are you paying for Windows now?

good linux dirstribution (like suse) cost you some $$$ too :)
Best (free) unix distro for "general" use is FreeBSD (used for about 10 years now). for security reasons: OpenBSD.

Best (free) linux distro: debian (just go for testing not stable). (currently have on couple of my servers)

Best comercial linux distro: suse

there are handfull of floppy distros used for routers.

if you don't have good linux/unix admin just forget using linux/unix based systems. It will be cheaper for you to by windows than adapt, configure etc linux system.

misconfigured linux/unix can be higher security risk than misconfigured windos :)

P.S. all BEST are IMHO

P.P.S. I'm no big bill fan (only 2 out of 5 my own systems use windows) but for general public and small businesses is usualy cheaper to stay with current windows config. if you are going to make DVR systems linux based is quit another storry (in this case *nix may be worth looking at)

the best deal for a oem win xp/2k i've found here is $143
i've managed to bought couple used licenses but it's unreliable

i myself is an ok admin, and there's always admins best friend - TFM
anyway, i'm not thinking just yet about making commercial linux-based product
just feeling like playing around hoping of some positive results
