  1. Tried searching throught the forums but could not find anything relevant... My question is simple...is it possible to store a DVR in a wall mounting gun safe (or would it be too restrictive in terms of air flow)... Thanks in advance...

    CAMERA PROBLEM

Thanks for the reply Rory... The problem seems to be caused by the position of the camera and an abundance of sunlight (noticed that I did not have the problem @ night...only during the day). I can't reposition the camera because the client likes the shot and does not want it changed. The camera has a sunshade but it does not extend down enough. Thinking about sticking a piece of cardboard there to block out the sun...what do u think rory?

    Condo camera

Hello, A friend of mine has asked me to install a wireless peephole camera in his condominium. The problem is that it is impossible to find a suitable replacement camera to match the existing peephole (1/2" in width). I have a wireless transmitter + receiver which seems to work fine in the condo. I was planning on grabbing a usb video grabber to connect to his laptop (to create the DVR). I need to find a camera the I can slide into the peephole or a suitable (i.e. cheap because the only one I could find sells for $2k) peephole viewer which I can connect to the back of the peephole. Can anyone please help me out...with the products or the retrofit...TIA
  4. Hello, I just installed 4 x ProVideo 1700W with an Everfocus EDSR400HE for a client. The problem is that one of the cameras occaisionally flickers (i.e. bright white light). The camera is powered locally (so I do not think it is a power issue). The wire used is 95% copper. Is it the termination? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. TIA. ICU

    180 degree tilt

I cannot find any cameras which tilt only to 180 degrees (since the back of the camera is facing a wall there is no point in getting a camera with a 360 degree tilt) or is there? PS....who makes the BEST cameras (I remember reading about a japanese company on this forum before)...is bosch second? Thanks in advance, ICU

    TESTER?

Just got a contract to test all of the existing wiring in a new custom built home (and to potentially wire all of the new homes being built). Does a tester exist that will test telephone, cat5 and bnc? I found a Triplett Lan WireMaster XR-5 that will test RJ45, RJ11, BNC, 1394 and USB. Anybody have any experience with these or similar units? Who is the best manufacturer of test equipment? Is there any good resources for structured wiring? I have only managed to find DIY websites so far. TIA, ICU

    Newbie help please.

5 ProVideo CVC1700W bullet cameras. 1. Length 2 x Runs are Less than 40 feet. 3 x Runs are Less than 150 feet. 2. Type of Coax. RCA RG6 Provo BNC twist-on connectors. 3. Type of Power Supplies. 5 x 12 DV transformers (came with cameras) Ran all of the wires through the same path in the house. Terminated the power in the utility room. Terminated the video by the quad. Problem only occurs when I have the quad connected to DVR (does this mean that it may be a bad connection from quad to DVR). Is there anywhere I could download a strip chart for RG6 and RG59 (i.e. to know how exactly how much to strip each wire). I do not have a voltage meter to determine the proper voltage and amps (could someone suggest a cheap but accurate one). TIA.... ICU
  8. Hooked up an APPRO 3011S to a quad and four Provideo bullets for a friend. The problem is that the vcr output is broken on the quad. The picture sometimes flutters up and down, causing the motion detection feature to be activated and to start recording. Is this a timing issue caused by the lack of connection from the vcr ouptut to video input? Would it be possible to solder another (female) BNC connector? Would I be better off treating the quad like a single camera instead of connecting it as a quad (i.e. vcr in and out connected to dvr video in and out) given the current situation. TIA... icu
  9. Thanks for the great lead Rory! I'm trying to get my hands on one (just waiting for a email reply). I will keep you guys updated. Keep in mind, that I have never used a DVR before, but am more than happy to offer my impressions of this unit. As for march networks DVR 3108, I invesigated that unit before. I found two local resellers: 1. Intercon Security. 2. Checkpt (I identified myself as a dealer and was quoted $3200 CAD without a HDD). ICU
  10. Could I use the quad I already have and buy a single channel dvr (w motion)? If motion is detected in one of the quads, would they all be recorded or just the quad in question? There has to be another dvr out that can give motion detection and good quality images @ a reasonable cost (besides kalatel).
  11. Thanks for the great advice and quick replies. 1 - Based on the suggestions of the group, I have been focusing on a DVR based solution. From an earlier post, I learned that the three best DVR manufacturers are 1. Dedicated Micros 2. Kalatel 3. Everfocus Since 1 & 2 are beyond my budget, I am seriously considering purchasing the Everfocus EDSR400F (or possibly the Vitek VT-DVR04). Does anybody have any experience with these units, specifically, the accuracy of the motion detection feature? Also, is the only difference between a simplex and duplex mux that you can record and view images simult (how about viewing stored video, would u need a triplex mux?) I am thinking about purchasing from ADI, Burtek or VSSCCTV (any comments?). 2 - I want the appearance of the house to remain clean. I guess my best bet is to go with an all in one (but is there better performace then with a mux + dvr?). Also, I would like the ability to monitor the system 24/7 but only record when motion is detected (can I still achieve this with a pir cam or will video only be sent when motion is detected?). 3 - I would like to monitor the system from upstairs in my bedroom or downstairs in the basement. I already have satelite hooked up in both locations. Would it be possible to use a RF Modulator to monitor the system on a dedicated sat channel using the existing wiring? How? 4 - I am not happy with the level of detail produced from one of the cameras. The camera is located about 25 ft. from the front door, attached under the garage suffet. It is pointed @ the front door @ a 45 degree angle. The problem is that the image lacks detail (i.e. people appear very small). I have read that most cctv cameras use a non-focusing lens to give a bigger field of view (i.e. with a focusing lens would you get a more detail but a smaller field of view?). Would it be possible to upgrade the lens on my lorex bullet cam to a focusing lens? (and would this do the trick?). If not, any suggestions on a good inexpensive cam with a focusing lens? 5 - I was recently approached about upgrading an existing analogue cctv system in an apartment building. The system currently consists of 12 cams hooked up into a mux and vcr. For insurance purposes, the video must be stored for 31 days. Would it be possible to simply replace the vcr with a dvr? Any suggestions? How much harddrive space is required to store video (with a reasonable image size) for a month? Thanks again, ICU
  12. Hello forum, I have contacted several local CCTV dealers/installers regarding upgrading an existing system to include motion based recording. The system, as it currently stands, consists of 4 bullet cameras hooked up through a quad into a monitor (or a normal tv). The problem is that EVERY dealer has told me that the ONLY solution is to purchase a $3k dvr (which just looks like a cheap computer with a capture card slaped in). Is there no way to record ONLY motion using a time-lapse vcr based system? I have investigated the option of running seperate motion detectors to the vcr, but the problem with this solution is that if one of the motion alarms is tripped, all of the cameras will be recorded. I have also seen other devices that can do this, but NOT in a cost effective manner (when combined with the cost of the vcr anyway). While I would like to keep costs at a minimum, image quality is my top priority (and that is why I am trying to find a vcr based solution). Also, I have read somewhere of a modulator that can split the signal into 2 different viewing locations, can anybody shed some light on this product? ICU
