  1. Kawboy and Buellwinkle - thanks!! You both were super helpful. Guess I need to upgrade my server and buy more cameras for my new setup. Combo wide and close-up shots.
  2. Boom. Thanks shockwave!!! The mystery is now clear to me, or at least significantly clearer That's what I needed. EDIT: oh and I see you have another helpful video, one on camera placement. I'll have to watch that one through when I have time. I went ahead and boosted the resolution to 2048x1536. EDIT 2: okay that higher resolution seems to help a bit.
  3. oh okay. Well here's one where the perp is looking directly at the camera, lit up by my motion light: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4Xy614LITgtQ1BrdWJFbzZCdzQ/edit?usp=sharing My friend is coming over tomorrow to help me install a previously planned camera addition on that side yard. Sorry, I'm new at this. Does anyone have some advice for camera placement, like put a 4mm hick bullet above the front door aimed at the street, and another under the soffit above the side yard, aimed toward the street? EDIT: Thanks for letting me know it's not an issue of camera image quality. That is helpful. I really like this community. Thanks for the support so far!!
  4. Okay, I'm still a noob around here. I really need some help. My Hikvision DS-2CD2132-I captured an image of someone banging loudly on the side of my house, or on a window, at 3:00am. I think he was trying to break in. Crazy banging; I though it was just a drunk at the front door, but this is different. I had just upgraded the synology drivers for my camera and this allowed me to set the recording to 1080p. Despite this, I cannot even see the person's face despite that fact that my motion detection light triggered and lit up his face. I got three separate videos of him. One of him out front on the sidewalk where he looks right into the camera, about 25' away. His face is lit up my my porch light. I got another capture where he enters the property, and another of him exiting. Here's an example of how poor my video feed is: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4Xy614LITgtaHViS1NFV3p3N2s/edit?usp=sharing He's walking about 15' from the camera. The lens is a 2.8mm lens. I have a 4mm Hikvision DS-2CD2032-I that I can put in this camera's place. Anyone have any suggestions for how to improve the video quality? Any help is greatly appreciated.
  5. I came back here to edit my post for anyone searching on this subject. I ended up buying two kinds of Hikvisions not on Synology's list. They all work, but it took a bit of drama to get in-camera motion detection working with the Synology. And the Synology will lose connectivity after a power failure, and require work to restore. see related threads: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=37182 viewtopic.php?f=19&t=39333
  6. Okay, so after I go into the cameras and edit the Synology's user account to remove its permission to change "Remote: Parameters Settings," Surveillance Station loses connectivity if it's restarted, or the SSS package is restarted. It seems to work for at least a little while. Let me see how long it will operate before it loses connectivity. I think earlier when I tried it, it might have lost connectivity during a power outage. Maybe it's okay until it loses power or is otherwise restarted. Yes, it is weird that SSS thinks it needs to control the camera settings in order to simply read the feed. EDIT: Working 5 days so far. Of course, no power outages or restarts. I guess I could buy a UPS Battery Backup to mitigate the power outages.
  7. I had disabled uPnP in the Hikvision. I wonder if it's any different if I re-enable it. I'll have to try it someday.
  8. Okay, I setup another user, named DSM on each of the cameras, removed permission for it to change settings, and I switched Synology DSM Security Center access from the "admin" account to the "DSM" account. I checked and it is not able to modify the motion detection settings. I bet that is going to do the trick. Well let me give it a week or so and see. EDIT: ARGH! Synology Surveillance Station looses connectivity to the cameras if I don't allow it "Permission, Remote Parameters Settings." Of course that allows it to change the motion detection settings, and it does change them. The cameras it does not have access to don't have their settings changed. Boo, hiss.
  9. Hmmmmm, if it's doing it with Hikvision's own software, it sounds like something more complicated. Well, I'll just have to try out setting up a non-admin account and see if that does the trick.
  10. Oh that's thinking; that's going to work. I'll give that a try when I get a chance. Thanks MindTwist!
  11. Once in a while, my Cameras' motion detection settings get reset back to default, where the entire view is selected, and the sensitivity setting is at or near max (instead of my settings where only part of the view is selected and the sensitivity is set to the middle.) I realize sometime after this happens because my cameras start recording when there is "no" motion. And they record loads and loads when there is no activity to speak of. All my cameras motion detection configs reset at the same time (both the DS-2CD2032-I, and the DS-2CD2132-Is.) I have them connected to a Synology DSM running ver 4.2. I thought I read over at NetworkCameraCritic.com that the Synology box takes control of certain settings on the Hikvisions, ( http://www.networkcameracritic.com/?p=1762#comment-4654 ) I renamed the cameras (from Syno) and I'm still having this problem. Here's some more info about my setup in case it's helpful: Synology Surveillance Station 6, running on DSM 4.2 build 3202 pfsense router, version 2.1 One camera bought as Hikvision DS-2CD2132-I, (and comes up as NC-KD032,) Firmware: V5.0.2 130805, encoding ver V4.0 build 130411. The other cameras are DS-2CD2032-I, firmware V5.0.2 130805, Encoding Version V4.0 build 130411. I'm using the camera configuration file (Hikvision.conf) from this thread: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=37182 POE through Zyxel ES1100 This forum has been a lifesaver for me; as always, any help or advice is greatly appreciated!! EDIT: I am using motion detection through the camera, not the surveillance station. My settings in Surveillance Station are set to camera motion detection.
  12. Ah that sounds like a great test. Maybe I'll try it next time I'm up at night when there's fog. I live in a temperate rainforest. Around here 100% humidity is called weather, and the dew point is whatever temperature it is outside So, yeah, I think y'all are on to something calling it moisture related. I'm calling it solved (Well, unless anyone knows what to do about it.) Thanks Everyone!
  13. I think it's not bugs; it's doing it again and it's 34 degrees F out there. When I look at it outside, I don't see anything flying by the camera, but it's picking something up (via the "Live View") There's definitely moisture hanging in the air right now; it's got dense fog outside. Maybe it's suspended water droplets blowing by the lens. I just checked; it's 100% humidity. Well, I updated the firmware to Hikvision latest stable version. Of course, that didn't change anything. Dryer vent dust - haha. Yes I could see that causing this, but doesn't look like it's the case over here.
  14. Every couple of weeks, my hikvision mini dome DS-2CD2132-I records constantly for hours and hours and hours. The video looks like the attached -- like there are tons of particles "blowing" in the wind. Although you can see from the tall grass, there is no wind to speak of. I go outside and look around the camera, etc, and there is no dust or particulates "blowing" around like in the video that records during that exact same time period. There is nothing there. I'm not crazy here. It boggles my mind. You can see from the video that the "dust" stops, changes direction, slows in speed, etc. It doesn't look like static or like a bad feed. I'm just stumped here. So I reset the camera settings (including "image" settings) back to default, (from those recommended in networkcameracritic.com's review of this camera.) And still the problems continue. This is not leaves, or bugs or snow, for sure. I thought it happens on foggy days more than not, but lately it has been happening at what seems like random. I can't figure it out. I tried searching the forum, but maybe I'm not searching for the correct terms. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Here's some information about my setup: Camera bought as Hikvision DS-2CD2132-I, but comes up as NC-KD032, Firmware: V.5.0.0 130719 encoding ver V 4.0 build 130411 This is the 2.8mm lens POE through Zyxel ES1100 I also have two Hickvision DS-2CD2032-I cameras, which are running indoors - (I've haven't had a chance to mount them outside yet.) Still problems if I disconnect those other two Hickvisions. No errors in Synology Diskstation Synology Surveillance Station 6, running on DSM 4.2 build 3202 pfsense router, version 2.1 everything else seems to be working great. I wasn't able to upload the video, so here's a link to it on youtube, instead: EDIT: I'm using the camera configuration file (Hikvision.conf) from this thread: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=37182
