  1. I would uninstall the software and start from the beginning. Here's a good thread on someone who rebuilt their Milestone server.
  2. I've been managing IT teams responsible for managing thousands of servers for over 15 years and I think many of the aftermarket case and CPU fans are better than those that come in low-end servers. Regardless of which way you go, fan failures are a fact of life and it’s always a good idea to have some sort of monitoring for either high temperatures, fan failures, or both. For small setups you can use something simple like one of these StarTech inline fan alarms. The other option is to hook into some other remote monitoring solution. I’ve been working on integrating temperature and fan speed monitoring via SNMP using Cacti and SpeedFan. When I’m done, I’ll get a page when the temperature gets too high in my server.
  3. Thanks... the Intel Core i7-4770S is a great processor. Low power and it really handles the load well. Regardless of the other components you choose, I would use i7-4770S with a good low power PSU.
  4. Here's the parts list from my build. I'm running XProtect Essential with 10 3MP cameras. Each camera is streaming at 2048×1536 20fps 4096kps CBR. It's probably overkill for 6 - 8 cameras, but I wanted a system I could expand up to 16 cameras. Here are the CPU, memory and network utilization graphs for the system. When I hooked up a Kill-A-Watt to the system, it's drawing 51 watts with Milestone running. With nothing running it idles at 44 watts.
  5. You should post your question in the Milestone support forums. They've been good about answering all my questions. http://forum.milestonesys.com/
  6. Port 123 is the standard NTP port.
  7. I wonder what that open header on the board is used for. Any ideas?
  8. I’m in the process of planning my IP camera installation and had a few questions regarding the Hikvision NVR’s. I’m looking at their 8 camera DS-7608NI-SE/8P model. I plan on putting the NVR into my server closet and running it headless. I’ve read through the manual and still have a few questions I’m hoping people can help me out with. 1. Has anyone used a Dahua camera with this model of Hikvision NVR? Is see that the manual says it supports PANASONIC, SONY, AXIS, SANYO, BOSCH, and ACTI. The manual looks a bit dated, so I wanted to find out if anyone has used a Dahua camera with this NVR. 2. If all the cameras plug directly into the NVR and the NVR is on my network, can I connect directly to the cameras from other machines on my network? In other words, can the NVR route traffic from the rest of the network directly to the cameras? 3. Beyond the initial setup, are there any limitations using the NVR without a keyboard and monitor? Can I do everything over the web interface? Any help is appreciated.
