What would you consider to be among the best license plate capture cameras? These would need to capture, but not "read" the rear license plates of vehicles going in and out of gates at a gated community.
We would prefer to record the result in analog since we already have analog DVR's and will have to feed the video approximately 1000 ft. from the gates to a guard shack.
Our supplier is recommending the Extreme CCTV or Messoa cameras and we have no experience with either.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have to admit that extreme are good reg cams, but any high end camera can do it, its all in the settings of the camera...it is fiddly work as there is a lot to consider....white stamp, shutter speed, frame interlace delay, vertical smearing, plate reflectance...inversion etc...expensive cams and lenses can do the job, but in reality the shift between day and night time operations really requires a specialist camera as the lighting almost reverses the settings

A nice idea but we can't install them in the driveways.

I know lots of installers and private users like to buy the devices from the local distributors, if you have experience with dealing with Chinese company, I do have a professional China based license plate capture camera manufacturer recommendation, I have ever bought one for my foreign friend personally.

This as another good company that specializes in LPR. Their spec sheet distances are for ALPR though, and can capture a plate from futher away. I recommend calling if you have an application for farther distances than the spec say.

I do not know about the "BEST RATED" license plate camera. But I have used the new IC REALTIME EL-ID1 : License Plate Capture Camera with much success (was first to use it from IC REALTIME) and before the release of the EL-ID1, I used the 10X-DN from them as well with no problems. I used to buy the REG-X but the price points were too high.
Recently, IC Realtime added the Speedbump camera line, and we have already installed 9 units with excellent results. See actual screen capture below of a commerical location that we recently installed.

Another screen capture of the IC Realtime speedbump camera in action, un-edited, taken yesterday 12/29/08 during heavy overcast and moderate to heavy rainy conditions.
I will post another image showing it at night as well, it doesn't matter the light conditions, your going to get a really sharp detail license plate for a good wholesale price from IC Realtime.

Seems like a good solution, what about when it rains or snows? Would the heat of cam melt snow?

The bottom picture of ISPY4U2 tag, was in the rain and heavy overcast. Far as snow, can't answer that, but we are about to do a government job in Ann Arbor using the same bumper cameras and will provide screen shots then.
