I'm fairly new to all this. I have been running a pc based software system with 4 cams. I just ordered a dvr1615n - it's a 16ch standalone without the hdd from scd.xxx (xxx=com). I am now wondering if I made a good move. Is anybody here familiar with this unit? I would appreciate it if someone could take a look at the specs (can't post a link here but you can get the specs by going over there and typing dvr1615n in the search box). Just wanted to know if anyone thinks this is a good unit. Just want to use it for residential purposes.
I also ordered a 400gig hdd and hope that it will auto format. I was told that the max hdd is 400gig by the techs, (even though the specs say 500). They said Seagate or Maxtor works best but the only 400gig ide that was available was a Samsung so I hope this works also.
Thanks in advance for your input.

I am familiar with this DVR.
I am also familiar with Sec Cam Direct.
I do like this DVR!
I do like the SCD also!
The manufacture for this DVR is called AVTech in Taiwan.
The model number is AVC 787.
You will also see this DVR as CPCam 507, and under other various brand names.
I like the DVR as you can add a disk array to add more storage space, and with an adapter you can use a computer monitor.
There are those out there that hate the application software that is used for remote viewing. I believe you are using Video Server E.
I like the viewer as an entry level machine. There are better DVRs out there, but I have never installed them so I cannot render an opinion about other DVRs.
I have installed alot of these style of DVRs from AVTech.
If you need a manual they are available from my website in various languages. You can also find out how to do a hard reset to the DVR.
There is other information on the AVTECH CPCAM TECH SUPPORT page.
Congradulations on your purchase, and I wish you the best. _________________ Scorpion

QUESTION: Why is there always enough time to go back and fix it right a second time??

Thanks for your reply scorpion. Nice informative website.
I like the dvr as well, but I had a problem with the software. I couldn't change the password or add users so they told me to do a firmware upgrade and it crashed. Everytime I tried to change the password or add a user it deleted all the users and I had to reset the dvr. Had to ship it back, now I have to wait until I get it back. It seemed to work good other than this problem.
Thanks again for your response.

Was this manually through the buttons on the DVR, or was this through the AP software?
I have never heard of this issue!
I am glad that you bought from a place that takes care of their customers.
Keep me posted when the other DVR comes in.
Thank you for your kind words on my website. I am glad that it is a source of information for everyone out there.
You should see my "keywords" list from the internet searches. I get a least 1600 hits a month. 80% is from google search. It is mind boggling for me to know that there are a large group of people screaming for information on DVR products on the web. _________________ Scorpion

It was through the software. Everytime I clicked apply to change the password or add a user it wiped everything out and I had to reset the dvr to default to get the software set up again. They thought a firmware update would fix the issue but it didn't take. I will keep you posted when I get it back.
It worked great except for this issue, but I didn't like the idea of not being able to change the password for remote viewing. They seem to take care of their customers. They even sent a label for the shipping.
One question... I put a 400gb hard drive in it. I know I could put a slave drive and add an array, but what is the limit on this unit for hdd space onboard? I heard it is 500gb TOTAL capacity, is this true? I was going to add another 400gb as a slave, but if it's true that 500 is the limit then I guess I will have to get an array.
Thanks again.
