Can one manufactures PTZ controller be used with other manufactures cameras with the possible exception some functions might not work?

DEPENDS......ALWAYS GET THE SPECs first. Controllers that do multiple protocols are pretty much standard. But other camera's may have special uses, like the COVI PTZ controller.very unique and specific to COVI only.
another issue with PTZ & control is methods used to enter menu of devices. That is not standardized and I have used/seen all sorts of "tricks" to get into the PTZ menu/setup. ie. one PTZ uses command 64 clicked twice at the mouse onscreen but also opens to menu with a controller by hitting "menu" button. some PTZ's don't recognize the "menu" button and require special clicks and buttons depressed.
No book out on this either

Other than the 'Pelco D' standard, what are the other most popular standrads?

There is also Pelco P, but thats not as open a standard as pelco D, so D tends to get used more often on third party controllers.
in the uk at least there is
BBV and BAXALL up-the-coax (compatible with dennard/dedicated micros as well as bbv/baxall),
BBV RS422, DENNARD RS485, PELCO P & D,
PHILIPS RS485 (BIPHASE up coax also), SENSORMATIC RS422, VCL TP,
VICON VPS(RS422), mark mercer (not sure what protocol they use), molynx up the coax (seems only compatible with other molynx kit)
and probably loads more.... All depends on what controller you have, what receiver you have, what cams you have etc....
Some manu's offer kits to convert one protocol to another (BBV has loads of options in this respect) so you can grow a mixed system.

Have you ever seen a PTZ head with the GE protocol in there? Is that available on the market?

generally the controller will have a few protocols in it. you need to find out what protocols your camera will work of & then look at the spec of the controller & see what protocols that can do.

Mark mercer use meridian protocol if you are torn between baxall and bbv go for bbv the are much more reliable and do more for you many differen protocols in them hope this helps .

Hi mate right if you got some money go for a BBV kit they really are top quallity i have a BBV tx100 controlling a bbv rx100 for a FVS metal mickey
