UPS neccessary for DVR's?

is battery backup for dvr's a must? i am just concerned because we have frequent black outs in our area. or would avr's just be fine? tia!

my concern is will it get damaged due to frequent power loss?

id say ups is a must for dvrs mainly so that your dvr runs on a smoother supply and gives you a chance to shut down the machine in the case of a powercut

Yes, and I would buy a nicer one too that provides a bit of line conditioning also. Clean power = happy equipment.

I would say yes, the idea is to keep the DVR running as stable as possible. That will require a means of keeping it powered when you have any type of power disruption. We typically get one that can power it for at LEAST 15 minutes, but usually more like an hour with the monitor running. That means 1500VA or bigger in most cases.

Not just power loss, there are plenty of cases where a large demand from other devices will cause the line voltage to drop rapidly which can cause all kinds of weird things to happen. The bottom line is the steady regulated power from a device made to do that job is ALWAYS better then assuming your power is clean.

which is more damaging? power loss or bad line voltage?

In my opinion bad power is far worse, it causes the components in your device to work much harder compensating for the problems.

if that is the case then another problem would be lightning strikes. how the best way to minimize the damage it may cause to our systems?

Proper grounding and bonding. If lightning hits your directly, nothing will really help but you can only protect against so many things. Quality surge supression and grounding are the keys to lightning mitigation.
