Hi my current HD cameras is useing shotgun cable can it be replaced with cat5 cable or is cat5 only suitable for ip cameras?

Yes but you will need to install baluns on both ends of the cat 5 for each camera .

cheers will the cat 5 improve the picture quailty?

Hard to say .depends on the condition and quality of your old cable and the quality of the baluns

If upgrading to an ip system is part of your future plans , then rewiring with cat 5 is probably the way to go .

If your upgrading your wiring to cat 5 with baluns because u feel it will help with "Picture quality" then cat5

May not be an ideal solution .you can buy baluns from $5 a pair to over $50 each .some work great ,some don't !

sure you ask for real rg59 siamese cable (solid copper is better than copper clad) and not the pre-made junk

Have you checked cable of your cctv camera?

I think you need to consider the distance. As far as I know, baluns has limited distance.
