CCTV Install In Washington DC, Experience?

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

While new here not so new to the world of CCTV and go figure no one ever posts when all's well ... SO, here's my rant! I'm unsure how the majority of states work as I'm a fairly small business however in MD there is no low voltage licensing (in other words no license is needed for CCTV installation). With that said have recently been receiving an influx of potential customers calling regarding a CCTV installation at their home and/or business in Washington DC as said state offers an incentive/rebate program for buildings with such fitted.

Like an idiot I went and bid on a job only taking the time to research requirements and code following to find one needs a low voltage license when installing said equipment there. To add insult to injury you need to be a DC master electrician to obtain the needed permit which I am far from even a MD journeyman electrician as my professional background has mainly consisted of network and technical resolution.

I guess in all aside from getting this off my chest has anyone ever encountered a similar situation? If so is there a lawful way around or proper way to go about this as becoming an electrician is not in the cards. Any help would be greatly appreciated, just considering my options (if any) before informing this particular client I'm of no help.

Hi. I have a 8way in DC at a Irish bar. Never had any problems... but I was under licence via a test company ... I’m based UK.

Virgins / West Virginia / DC all close but very different regulations low voltage is only needed on commercial installs and another state might need low voltage for both domestic and commercial.

In your case in DC you might only need licence for networking/ LAN infrastructure and not for plug play Poe ip systems.

Or you could just use a licenced low voltage contractor to install cables only to get past the regulations
