Outdoor Home Security System Recomendation?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for an outdoor security system to monitor the outside of my home. Things of importance to me:

1.) Budget. I'm hoping to find something that will work for less than $500.

2.) I'll need 4 outdoor cameras that will work well during daytime and night time.

3.) The mobile app (for iPhone) needs to be user friendly and reliable. I've heard some of these apps are very unreliable so this is a little bit of a concern.

4.) I'd like to record 24/7 and receive notifications if motion is detected in the "zones" I setup.

5.) I'd like a DVR (or NVR) that will hold at least 7 days of 24/7 recordings. I don't want anything with a subscription/cloud based recording I need to pay for monthly/annually. I'd like to pay one time at the time of purchase and not continue paying.

6.) The cameras will need to be as good of quality as I can get for my budget. The system won't do much good if I can't identify a person and/or car (license plate would be ideal) if needed.

Is there a system that comes to mind that would fit my needs?

Thanks so much in advance for any help!

There is a 10% off sale, so this system would be just over your budget after discount. Be aware that if your cameras are outside and you setup motion notifications, you may be getting notifications all day long from grass moving, trees moving, birds, clouds, sticks, changes in lighting, etc.

Thanks mattagie,

I decided to give this one a try: Samsung 8 Channel DVR with 4 1080P HD Cameras (https://www.crutchfield.com/S-MpoysTnJ90Q/p_911C74043N/Samsung-SDH-C74043N.html)

If it doesn't work out, I can always exchange it for a different system. I asked about cabling in another section of this forum. This system comes with four 60' BNC Cables. Are these basic BNC cables good enough quality if I ever want to upgrade my system?

I will have a professional installer run all the cabling so I want to make sure I have him run good quality cables as I'd rather not need to swap out the cabling later on and pay the installer again to run new cables.

Should I get better cables for this install, or just have the installer run the basic BNC cables this system comes with?

Thanks for any advice!

Yes those cables are fine. Your future upgrade will only be limited by the fact that its BNC cables and not able to use IP systems.

Hi. Discontinued system .... why waste your $500

You asked for a good system with good apps and you pick the worst.

Samsung iPOLis app is fine if your dvr gets the updates if not it stops working..... and buying a discontinued system it’s life span is not long

Also SDI only format. Does not give you much options to cameras.

The cables that come with the kit are not coax even in the reviews the cables give problems

So yes use another cable when installing rg59 or cat5 with baluns

I am probably going to return this system now that I keep hearing that an IP system would be better.

So, I guess I'm back looking for a good IP system in the $500 range. This is a little more than I'd like to spend (with 10% discount around $550) - https://www.securitycameraking.com/P-NVR-SB-4-POE4-62012-prd1.html Would something like this work well.

What system would you suggest in the $500 range?

Thanks!!!

The price of $469 does not include a hard drive. If you add a 2TB hard drive, the price is $587. Also that system is maxed out at 4 cameras. The Lorex system I references allows for up to 8 cameras should you ever want to add more.

Hey mattaggie,

I actually added a 3TB HD which brought the price to $634 (with the discount on the site is brings it down to around $550). That's with no tax and free shipping. I liked that it had 4MP cameras. The 4 channel NVR is something I would need to consider though. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

That Lorax system you linked to looks pretty good, but it has 3MB Cameras and a 2TB HD. Total price will come to a little over $600 with tax (free ground shipping).

Does anyone have a suggestion for a decent IP system with four cameras with at least 3MP (higher resolution would be great) and at least a 2TB HD 8 channel NVR that would be in the $500 range?

Thanks all!!

Hi. I would also go with the lorex link.

Your link is a no name .

Don’t just pick on your budget ... if you need to pay a little more then wait till you have a better budget .... don’t waste money from the start.

Lorex gives you secure cloud if needed good apps and also you can add other cameras if needed and not just the lorex cameras

That Lorex system comes with 60' length cat5e cables. I will likely need closer to 100 feet lengths. I searched google for cat5e cables and there are TONS at all kinds of price ranges and different descriptions (some mention copper, some mention different ratings, etc...).

Can someone suggest good cables at a good price. I'll need 4 cables about 400 feet total. It can be bulk 400 feet, or 4 individual cables of 100 feet each.

Would one of these be a good option?

Thanks for the help!!!

I contacted Monoprice and they recommended a CAT6 cable. They said CAT6 will work better for cable runs of 100 feet or longer.

They suggested this cable: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=2119

They are 100 feet length at a price of $13.19 each.

Is that a good cable for my needs at a decent price?

Thanks!

Thanks Tom,

Would you have a suggestion for 100 foot length cables (rather than bulk)?

Would someone have a suggestion on where to get four cat5e (or cat6 if that would be better) cables, each 100 feet long? Something I can just plug one end to the camera and the other to the NVR without any further steps needed?

Thanks for the help!

Bulk cable is easier to run throughout a house because it doesnt have ends on it. Cable can fit through tighter spaces and smaller holes are drilled into the house. Also the ends tend to get caught on things when pulling the cable. Now once your cable is put into place, you would need to crimp cat5 connectors onto the ends. You need a crimper tool to do this and it does take a bit of practice. But its not rocket science and you will have a new skill.
