Two NVR's on same network

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Just doing a proposal for an install and can't get my head round this. A 22 network camera installation across multiple buildings with all the Cameras wired into a HIKVISION NVR in the main office of a site. All cameras fixed, but there are 8 fisheyes with virtual ptz options on them too. I see no problems so far.

Here's the but - the client also requests to have backup storage in a second building. They also want full control in here as well. After thinking NAS and a laptop, I then had the idea of putting a second NVR in the other building, with just a Cat 6 line between its secondary NIC and the secondary NIC of the first NVR.

Would this work - would it double network traffic slowing speeds to useless? how would virtual ptz controls work for fisheye cameras if both NVR's tried to control at the same time?

Many thanks in anticipation

Are these cameras plugged directly into the back of the NVR or are they on a Switch?

Also If you do end up going with 2 NVRs, When controlling a PTZ, everyone will see it being moved and also both parties will be able to move it but one at a time. Say You are moving a PTZ, the other person can jump in and take control of it and vise versa. But you should be able to set permission permissions. What retention are you trying to achieve on the backup?

Haven't tried, but I think it should work. With Hikvision NVRs you can connect to a stream from a DVR, I am sure you must also be able to connect to a NVRs stream. If you connect to the second NIC on the first NVR, or if your network is configured properly, no, it would not slow down the network.
