Newbie with DNS questions

Recommended Posts

Hi - looks like a lot of great help and info is here! Hope someone can help me with a few basic questions. I have an 8-camera Optivision DVR/NVR which is working fine, I can access the system directly or via IP address on my home network.

My problem seems to be with remote access via DNS. I would expect to be presented with the DVR login screen. Instead, I get a page offering to sell me a domain name - which my vendor was supposed to do last year.

1. Does anyone know anything about the Optivision DVR? Who makes it, etc?

2. I was supposedly registered at 'myname'.dvrdyns.com for a remote access url.

3. Port Forwarding is set up for the DVR in my router for a specific dedicated IP on my network. I can see that device when I ping (good pings)

it and also when scanning devices.

4. SO far, basic tests on my domain name show it to be working and active, but has SOA alerts, which I gather to be Start of Authority. The tests also report some weird IP addresses which I don't recognize, and connected to something called ns2.parkingcrew.net.

Thanks for any info to help me figure this out, while I WAIT for my installer tech to be near my neighborhood![/size]

Thank you.

In general, do most people here allow there vendor/installer to establish & maintain their domain name? If so, I figure the price included a setup fee and yearly (or bulk) maintenance for the domain registration?

Or is it preferable to register and pay for your own?

Still kinda new at this.

Thanks again!

Hi. A good installer would set up a DDNS service in your name and let you set your own passwords.

Have you asked your ISP if they do a static IP address .....sometimes there free or some charge a small fee.

But before setting another up I would change your recorder passwords and give it another local IP .... To block the existing DDNS service.
