If you own a Spy Shop or some other business that sells pocket knives then be advised of changes coming to rules in regards to pocket knives.

BUREAU OF CUSTOMS AND BORDER PROTECTION has requested changes in laws to outlaw certain knives with assistance blade openers.

Some knives will fall under these changes. Pocket knives with a thumb opener will fall under this new category. As of now "one hand opening" knives are not considered "switch blades". The rule changes will includes these knives as well.

I do not know all of the implications. What is said by the U.S. Customs’ proposal indicates it is directed at only the importers of assisted-opening knives.

Those that oppose such changes will also create the fear factor to help the cause for them. You will hear rumors that all pocket knives will become illegal to include tool style multi tools ect.

For those that have an interest I will provid some links, but you will have to decide what is said as truth, or "fear mongering".

What do you think?????

You have to wonder what this costs to come up with let alone enforce.

We have been under this stupid color code for terror attacks I am sure this costs several million dollars to come up with. What exactly am I supposed to do at the various color levels anyway. I check for bombs under my truck every morning and walk a zig zag path everywhere I go. It must be working no attacks so far. Now I have another threat to deal with, pocket knives I will really be mad if some terriost gets me with a swiss army knife an not a big old explosion of some type. I probably wont even make the front page of the local paper.

That's like that old joke, little Johnny walking around the house banging on a pot with a wooden spoon. His mom stops him and asks him why he's making all the noise, little Johnny says, "Mom, that's to keep the alligators away!" Mom says, "But Johnny, there are no alligators where we live!" "Well you see then, it's working!"

So it does or DOES NOT cover knives that have a little thumb-thingy to open them?

If it does, that's only bout 90% of all the popular folding knives on the market.

Nevermind folding knives, that would apply to pretty much any contractor's utility or carpet knife...

OK... I read through the 60-page PDF linked above. The "we think this is a switchblade and should be illegal" stuff starts about page 27. They're talking about "assisted opening" knives, not traditional lock-back or "tactical folder" knives.

There is a long-standing law in the United States against the importation of switchblades. The sticking point seems to be the definition of "switchblade." I recall switchblades from when I was a teen... you click a button and the the knife springs out/open. The CBP has extended that definition to include "assisted opening" knives. These are knives that ARE spring-loaded like a conventional switchblade, but require you to open them about 30 degrees before the spring kicks in... it's actually a pretty clever design. Here are some videos with the specific knives mentioned in the report:

"Outburst" opening system: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6V72tillFkY

"Van Hoy assist" opening system: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAzun_6hJag

"Tailwind spring assist" opening system (obnoxious music): http://revver.com/video/1348300/colt-firefighter-tailwind-spring-assist-knife/

I can almost see the CBP's point in this, coming at it from a legalese standpoint. Those knives open almost instantly, and look, at least to the layman, like a switchblade.

On the other hand, I think the law behind it is silly. I've been in plenty of situations where I needed a one-hand opening knife (up on a ladder, holding something up with one hand, while needing to cut something with the other... out fishing... etc). PLENTY of people have a legitimate need for an easy, one-hand-opening knife.

As far as the "weapon," angle... if somebody is worried about the folding knife visible in my pocket? Well... let's just say they've COMPLETELY missed the boat.

It's not silly if you sell knives. It's great for business. Guns, bullets, knives ... sales always spike on internet chatter like this.

Best,
Christopher

Sure... I absolutely agree, and there's nothing wrong with it. Everybody's got to make a living

Sure, nothing wrong with it, but a lot of people are being played for fools. Here's an example of how it works. A law is passed that makes a particular type of gun or bullet or knife illegal. The law will go into affect in 18 months. Manufacturers fire up the production line as orders increase five fold. Sales outstrip supply, there is a shortage, buyers are frantic to stock up on items they would never have purchased in the first place had the law not been passed. If it's going to be illegal, then they have to have a dozen. Then the law takes affect. Several years later the law expires. Now that the item is legal again, sales are low. So, they introduce a bill to make them illegal again, sales jump, and so it goes ... :)

OK, so who really benefits from this cycle? Want to increase CCTV sales? Introduce a bill making them illegal and then hype it on the internet. Your sales will jump through the roof.

Best,
Christopher

I still prefer a good 'ol pointy stick.

So a folding knife could become illegal, but a knife in a sheith isn't? Isn't a blade that's aready out faster than having to unfold a blade?
