Security for football pitch.. NEED HELP!

Hi Guys, need your advice. Ive got a job to provide security for a local football club. There will be 5 outdoor ptz cameras mounted on poles, for these cameras, the club is getting civil guys to run some cables underground (approx 1/2metre underground) using corrugated pipe. We're going to provide the cables in drums. Now here's where im unsure, these cameras are going to be nearly 500metres away from the club house, would it be ok to use CAT5 cable, would it matter if its UTP or STP?

 

What do i need to watch out for whilst running these cables, is 500m to far to transmit a video signal, im looking at COPs twisted pair products:

The CAT5 cables are only going to be used for telemetry and video signal, they already have electric cables near the designated areas and i checked with the manager and they are on the same phase as the DVR and other internal cameras. This is probably one of the largest jobs we've done and would appreciate any feedback and support you guys could provide. Thanks

All I can really comment on is the UTP vs. STP. I say stick with UTP. Check this out:

 

Basically, if your external field strength does not exceed 3 V/m, your

good-balanced UTP cabling will function without any problems.

 

Some tests from Lucent show that it is extremely difficult to find an office

environment with field strength exceeding this value. Testing in an airport

(where EMI is harsh) has shown that field strength is below 3 V/m.

 

It needs to be remembered that simply putting the shield around cabling does not help to improve immunity and reduce radiation. There are several critical conditions:

 

- shield must be continuous along the whole link (without any pigtail

connections!)

- shield must fully enclose cabling (360degrees) along the whole link - shield

must be grounded at both ends of the link

- the building must have a good-quality grounding system (according to

IS11801, max. voltage difference between any grounding points must not

exceed 1 V)

 

If one of these conditions is not satisfied, then shield performance will be

badly degraded. For example, tests from 3PTest shown that if the shield

continuity is broken, the emissions from shielded cabling system increases

as much as 20 dB on the average.

 

Conclusion

==========

Shielded cabling may behave better with regard to immunity and radiation ,

but it takes too much efforts to provide the required conditions for this

behavior in terms of money, maintenance and regular checking.

 

Good-balanced UTP system provides good EMI performance in the most

office and industrial environments (where field strengths is below 3 V/m).

Where field strength is more than 3 V/m, it is safer to use fiber that is

immune to EMI. Also, be aware that most LAN equipment is also rated for operation

with field strength up to 3 V/m.

Anyway, NVT makes Avtive (amplified) Transveivers/Receievers that if using Cat5 will get up to 1.5 miles with Active Transmitters at the cameras, or 3000' with Passive Transmitters at the cameras, or the other way around. They have 4, 8 and 16 channel versions, as well as single receivers and transmiters.

 

For the price of the COP stuff, give it a try, But also make a seperate quote for the NVT (or similar) high end UTP/Cat5 products.

COP products are just OEM, nothing special, same as Eclipse, Mace, etc. They work most of the time, just depends what you want. Amplified will give you the best image quality with little to no loss of quality. You can also "Repeat" the signal by using another Transceiver at say a 1.5 mile point (for example) so to continue on for another 1.5 miles, and so on and so on.

 

Ofcourse NVT is expensive, but it is very commonly used in PTZ installations to obtain the best image available, other than going with Fiber. NOTE: I havent installed their products yet, but I did do a service on one of them where they had PTZs and the 16 channel Transceiver, and Passive TX's. It was a great crisp image and the cameras were 2000+ feet away. On that same note, i was asked to take a look at an installation that had some OEM UTP hubs, and some Merlit Lim PTZs, have the cameras didnt work due to distances of 2000' the others that did work were in the 1000-1500' range, some were intermittent and the others were just not a good picture. These were all passive. They upgraded to NVT.

 

So ill let you decide.

We use utp with passive baluns over this distance with no problem.

 

If you have electricity at the camera end why not use active baluns & be sure.

Thanks for feeback so far. Rory 500metres is approx 1600feet, im looking into the NVT equipment now, not to sure the performance of those COP products, we've used those 4 video over 1 cat5 units, loads of places without any problems, but not for this sort of distance. C7 thanks for that infor, think im gonna stick to UTP CAT5. Baywatch, what manufacturer for those passive baluns where they? Anyway, cables should be in within a couple of weeks, ill update you on any more obstacles! Gonna use a GV800 to get those PTZ cameras connected up first, with Merit Lilin domes, but looking to upgrade to GV1000 once all other cameras are done.

Hi

 

If you are using Merit Lilin domes, why not use the IP ones (they are not much dearer) and run in an extra cat5 cable (cheap enough) then you could network them as well. We did this with some in a school & the head can ptz them to selected areas (catch smokers etc) independently of the Geo system. He likes this independence.

The baluns that we have used have all been unbranded (they all seem to be made by the same company in Taiwan) they have the same part number whoever we get them off.
