CCTV virtualization best practices?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am planning to set up Genetec SC on a VMware vSphere 5.5 virtualization platform and SAN storage. Currently I have very limited ideas on how to present the SAN storage for storing the video files. I have the following questions:

- LUN for Genetec server VMs (Directory, Archiver, etc)

Which one is better, storing all VMs in a single LUN, or distribute them among a few LUNs?

- LUN for video files

Which one is better: RDM-V or RDM-P or VMFS? I would like to have the best performance while at the same time keeping a good system's high-availability.

In addition to this, there is a recommendation from Genetec that the size of LUN should be between 4-8 TB for the best performance. Depends on the number of camera to be assigned to an Archiver server, video retention requirement, and maximum drive letter in Windows OS the LUNs size may need to be increased a lot. How do you balance these things out?

I'd appreciate if anyone can share their experience on this.
