New System - Onboard Drives or NAS?

Recommended Posts

Time to put in a new system at work.

We've got 29 analogue (non IP) cameras here and have been asked to keep a year's worth of footage (10fps, motion detect).

The two options we're looking at are building a server chassis (probably running Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials) with 10+ 4Tb drives (non-RAID SATA) and a couple of (Geovision*) cards in it.

Other option is a smaller box with the cards in it storing to a (Synology) NAS unit.

Former will obviously be a lot cheaper (especially if bays are not hot swap) and have a certain level of upgradability to it. Probably a nicer platform to export footage from.

Latter will be marginally easier to increase capacity.

Anything else I should be considering here?

Thanks in advance!

* We've had some Geovision systems in the past. Happy to use again unless someone can suggest why Aver might be a better option.
