Samsung SHR-8082

Couldn't find any good info on the Samsung SHR-8082 (edit, SRD-870DC) on the forum. Wondering what people's thoughts are? Looks like a great DVR, good recording capabilities, etc. It says it deinterlaces the video, is this a joke or is it actually going to be better than other dvr's.

A friend had his cabin in western NC broken into, so we are going all out with an nice alarm system (DSC 1832) and 6+ cameras. Lots of glass-breaks, motions, smokes, and contacts on all doors/windows!! And don't forget the 2 30W outdoor sirens & 1 15W indoor one!

So anyways, what are your thoughts on this DVR??? Would be paired with a good UPS in a safe place. Most of all need good quality recording (will be using 3.5TB (edit, 4) of HD's), and remote viewing needed. I already told him that viewing 6-8 cameras all through a medium-speed DSL connection ain't gonna work well!!

You can probably guess what cameras in using. The situation around the cabin is perfect for them. Think I'm gonna go with CAT5e and baluns on this setup.

Yea, thats what I kinda figured... Samsung seems like a good brand, and the design looks good from what I can tell. Everything is planned out, just waiting for shipping!

Will try to take a bunch of pictures during/after set-up. I am eager to see how these fancy baluns work! Hopefully I can help other newbies get a feel for the stuff I'll be using.

Do you think 3x30W 120dB sirens is enough???

Also, I got a DSC 5580TC Escort Phone Module, so he'll be able to dial in and arm/disarm/etc with voice prompts from any phone. (Need one of these for my house!)

Cameras have arrived, 2x DBM-24VD, 6x VCM-24VF.

DVR was a discontinued model, so I now am going with the SRD-870DC w/4TB of drives, still from Samsung. Really all the same features... Could a mod change the thread title to Samsung SRD-870DC?

OK here's some pics of the cameras. Hoping other newbies looking to buy their first cams can get a feel for what these are like before buying. (I would have liked that!) All pictures taken with a Nikon D5000, scaled down for online album...

A look at video & power connections. This is from a VCM-24VF, so power polarity doesn't matter. Instead of using their short & flimsy direct-viewing composite cable, I'll connect to my setup monitor (~12" CRT) to do initial set-up.

This will be my first time terminating network cabling. I'm sure you guys have done billions! I practiced a bit - did good, made a patch cable and it worked the first try. Did a few RJ45 connectors & a couple RJ11's...

My 'test-monitor'. Its like 12". Good quality, though - cameras look beautiful through it!

All the stuff that came in one VCM-24VF box. The ports on the back-box are 3/4" & 1". Guide pattern will make things easier.

Here you can see where the RS485 connection would be. Wonder why they don't use it...?

You cannot go wrong with this dvr! Max your record rate to highest full D1 30pps and prepare to be impressed...you'll swear you're viewing live video

Really! Well that's good to hear. I will be starting install on Monday, will try to get a bunch of pics. Probably won't be taking the Nikon though... Eventually I'll probably turn it down to like 15-20 so we get more recording time.

Here's the power supply, 12VDC @ 10A. Case is nice and thick, seems well built!

Most of the alarm wire. 2x500ft. of 22/2, & 1x500ft. of 22/4.

1x500ft. of 18/2, and 1x1000ft. of Coleman CAT5e - very good quality data cable.

2 30W (that's speaker output) sirens made by DSC. They are really big, bet they will scream real loud.

Pre-set-up of the alarm panel. Main module (top) is a PC-1832. 8-zone expansion (right) is a PC-5108. Escort module (left) is a 5580TC.

The baluns. I tested with the 1000ft. roll of CAT5e, and they work great.

Indoor siren, splice crimps, a few recessed contacts, and a bunch of surface-mount contacts, all NC.

What sort of alarm sound will come out of them? Voice, or siren oreven a Freight Train perhaps?

Yes sir - they are extremely loud. Within like 15 feet, they should cause temporary hearing damage.

They are mounted on opposite sides of the cabin, about 15' up. When we did the walk test (2-second siren on each zone violation, for testing), the sirens would echo for a couple seconds after they turn off! We had a neighbor (1/2 mile away) ride up on his ATV to check things out, with a nice little revolver on his right hip. Lots of good old country guys there - good people to have around!

These sirens have built-in drivers, with the option of a steady siren (yellow wire positive), or yelp (used for fire usually, red wire positive). So they put out a siren sound.

If we wanted even more ear-rape, I would have bought a separate speaker (like a 60W or 100W), and connected it to an individual driver.

Also, to follow up on the DVR, it is truly wonderful. GREAT build, from hardware to software. Runs cool & quiet, records great video. And when set on 30FPS - it is practically no different from live video. Remote viewing has been wonderful, set up a DDNS account for free, and my friend can log in any time. If with very slow modem upload-speed, he can watch all 8 cameras at CIF resolution, at normal quality, at about 2FPS.

What will trip those ass kickin sirens?! And how will you disarm them remotely? I have been looking like crazy for some sort of IP siren that I can set off remotely if need be, and then disarm again. If I could figure that one out, I'd be a happy camper man. Your whole system looks great. Very best of luck with it. I'm two camera runs shy of finishing my install but in the mean time, I have gotten totally hooked watching my cams! I have them on screen every single night and it's been great. Post some screen shots of those cams in remote view sometime too.

installed alot of the 30 watt sirens in my alarm installer days ... loud things, never installed them in residential communities for that reason. With huge warehouses we would just put one on either side (2 total) and that was loud enough.

One client I took over had one though at their house, with a voice driver and it not only squealed but it also said the police have been called. Got rid of that voice driver after a while as it got annoying anytime a staff member opened the window to do some work without disarming first (AC on 24-7).

At one time i had 2x 20 watt sirens and 2 indoor sirens all mounted outdoors at my 15-25' appt.

years of hurricanes eventually killed the indoor ones, sold one 20 watt and have just one 20 watt left!

Most homes had 15 watt outdoor sirens installed.

The install is actually done, has been for a while now. My friend is real happy with the whole setup, from being able to check in with the cameras (DDNS subdomain for free), to being able to arm/disarm the alarm from any phone. (I think that is so cool - I might have to add on that board to my system!) So if it goes off, it will call him, and then he calls back to disarm it, after confirming whether it was a false alarm.

Yea, two 30W outdoor's and one 15W indoor's is overkill - but my friend specifically wanted them. So I was like, sure! We were considering getting an add-on PGM output board and power board, plus another transformer for the panel so we could run a couple more!

I should mention, the cabin is rather far away from other houses, so the huge sirens are not that big of a deal.

The sirens will by triggered by the alarm if any of the 14 connected zones trips. That includes 3 motion detectors, 4 glassbreaks, and like 35+ door and window contacts. All major areas and a hallway have motions' and there are glassbreaks next to each 'group' of windows. Rory I'm sure you are familiar with this?

At some point, I would like to add up all of the connections I made... Probably over 500 including the camera connections, and wiring the phone lines and modem through the UPS. Only snag we ran into was a faulty modem from the ISP, as well as some minor motion adjustment. This was my third time programming a DSC alarm, the newer 1832 was pretty much the same as the two 832's I've redone.

I will probably be uploading an HD youtube video showing how the remote viewing works with this DVR.

Two things for sure- that cabin is gold to you, and so should your friend be too! I think I saw some screen shots you posted from those cams on that cabin. All good- very good.

except we climb in the attics here, not many houses like that here .. some on the out islands though im sure. the animals we find in the attics here are rats ! but worse than that is the exposed high voltage from electricians or handymen that dont follow any code ... oh yeah and I got a nail in my head twice from attic work .. its a nightmare up there!

Rory - sounds like a tetanus nightmare! I have been shocked by 120V a few times, through arms and across the chest even. I think my record is about 30 seconds standing outside while my whole body was shaking. I had completed a christmas light string circuit. It was funny because as I completed the circuit, all the lights came on...flickering dimly while I shook...

Since I was across line & neutral, the GFI didn't stop the flow... Are GFIs common there? (I'm guessing not!)

BTW I am almost done uploading a 800MB (takes forever on a 30KB upload speed) youtube video that showcases the web functions of this DVR. Not sure how I should share it with those who want to see it... I don't want to make it public for everyone... Suggestions?

800mb? Did you try convert it to Mp4 first? that normally makes it much much smaller. I use handbrake for that. Then upload to youtube is faster also.

You can select not to make it public but can still share the link, or have it ask for a password.

Oh, please post that link when it's done. I'd love to see it.

I have two more attic trips for my home install. Six total so far and it's not a stand up attic. BLAZING heat. If I don't wear a bandana on my head, my own sweat will blind me in 90 seconds flat. In my usual way of doing things, with no particular pressure to do this job, I chose summer to do this. DOH! I finally had enough and got some wood down under my feet too, so I don't have to be an acrobat anymore either- stepping from one beam to another like a moron. But heck, at least I know I'm the only thing alive up there!

Once again I've been surprised by what Samsung offers... Just realized they have a free program called SmartViewer3.0. So instead of logging in through a browser, you can open up this program and log in from there. It has a nice GUI, is simple to use as well.

I am working on a video for this as well. Its like the web interface, except much smoother and works even better.

It can connect to ALL of their stuff. So if you have a NVR with 64 IP and/or analog cameras, it will connect and display it. I think of it as the 'head-end' for the people who need to manipulate the system.

Forget web viewing, this is much better if you want to click a shortcut on your desktop, and view your house from anywhere. Video coming soon!

Looking forward to seeing that vid too. A few threads down I did a vid on my multi client software too. Once you use dedicated software it's hard to go back. Just the extended viewing options and full screen views is enough to make me prefer it big time. But, browser access still has it's place too. I find my software a little cumbersome- it opens slower and accessing the remote dvr setup pages, which launches a browser anyway, is somewhat more cumbersome too. I actually prefer to access setup pages from the active-x browser. It's just faster and easier. In fact, overnight when I'm viewing remotely I've experimented with signing in as admin in the browser and user in the software, viewing the two simultainiously. Should I need to make quick setup changes I can do it in the browser. Pretty cool actually. Looking forward to your vid!

yeah im not a browser fan myself, at least for apps ...

funny really since thats what I started with back in 1996 writing code for, and have made alot of browser related apps over the years ... but being stuck inside another program, the browser, just limits things too much IMO.

Example, here is a small custom app i created for the dahua DVRs I use right now... ofcourse this still does not compare to my livevue app (still in re-development) but this was put together to be fast for slow connections and had to be done quickly ... so its like super simple and super quick to load.

for example i have a folder on my Jump Drive with a copy of this of different DVRs so I can demo it on any Windows PC I goto .. but more importantly I have a copy of it on my desktop and click the shortcut and I am viewing my cameras in less than a second. Runs on XP and Win7 without installation.

Now if I need to make changes I have a copy of the latest manufacturer full software with all my DVRs already setup in it.

@Birdman. Thanks alot for taking the time to post up videos of your entire setup. This forum easily provides the most info for the DIY guy. Ive gone through 2 boxed Costco systems having returned them the following day. Im definitely set on the Samsung DVR you have got, and your camera's footage look fantastic, especially outdoors

Im looking to build two systems like this one for my home and one for my business Is it possible that you would be able to show us your setup as it flows when it is night out.

Information/video footage is tough to come by on cctv stuff, you would think these companies would put out at least that so customers have an idea of what they are buying. Some companies on Youtube heavily skew their video, without giving the viewer how much light is provided in a given clip

But if you could post up a night cam, I would greatly appreciate it
