Accessing my DVR remotely? (catcheye alternatives?)

I have a DVR system that was set up by a professional.

I have been accessing it remotely using this application called Catcheye but it is barely functional and it's one of the worst applications I've ever used.

The thing stutters, doesn't let me specify the time of viewing well and often drops connections and crashes for no apparent reason.

IS it possible to use another app to access my DVR?

If not, should I look to replace my DVR while keeping my cameras?
