Help selecting Security surveillance to my home

Recommended Posts

Hi i never saw anything about security cameras, i read this forums and googled some brands, however i don't have a clear idea what to buy, i have clear that i need:

4x Outdoor cameras need to be good quality because i live a sea side zone and if not good all iron in 2 years is completely damaged by saltpeter, each one to cover one side of house, with night vision.

1x Indoor cameras one no need to be placed in garage, also with night vision.

1x Indoor Camera to be placed in one zone of house ( i would like a discreet one).

1x DVR preferable if support some tool that export records to some cloud tool that keep sending in case power or cable internet get cutted.

Can someone recommend me some tool for this?

Well there are some cameras disguised as 'smoke alarm', 'Passive Infrared Alarm', 'Teddy Bear', 'Spy camera', 'clock' or as a 'small bullet camera', but the main problem is that they most of the time lack of infrared leds, so at night they are worthless without enough light. You can always try to find something that look like a dropcam (or an other camera that is flat) and put it behind a (dark colored) painting (with a hole in it). Put an infrared illuminator bulb in a desk lamp and switch it on at night?

For the fourth point, you will need an UPS (Uninterruptible power supply). You will need at least 2, since one is used for your modem (to upload the images to the cloud) and one for the DVR (for uploading the images). If you buy POE cameras, you even can use a third UPS for the POE switch, so you can record at least 10 minutes more (after a power fail) depending on the power it can provide. Well in case that your internet cable has been cut, the solution to upload to the cloud would be to have a modem (read something about a Draytek router but other routers/modems may also support this) which supports a 3G/4G modem as a backup line (with preferred unlimited data)? In that case you will still need an UPS.

But besides a camera system, it would useful to install an alarm system (with a backup battery) so the alarm can send a sms or call you or your neighbour when the power is down or the alarm has been triggered.

If you have a dog, you can use active infrared detector. Place it at a certain height that your dog cannot reach as this sensor works with a line in sight between the two detectors.

I think you better off visiting a specialist, since the coating of the cheaper cameras will be damaged when I read your description... Maybe someone else can give his/her point of view.

You need to have a wide angle illuminator. IR illuminators tend to have very narrow beams. Here's one with 120 degrees coverage.

http://www.amazon.com/CMVision-Wide-Angle-IRD50-Illuminator/dp/B00EDRQEOW

That also has the benefit of being 850nm LEDs which produce IR that is invisible to the naked eye. Not all cameras can see 850nm, though, so you'd have to check your camera specs or experiment with some until you find one that works.

The problem with this illuminator is that it looks like an LED illuminator to the experienced eye. Maybe burglars wouldn't catch on. You could try to find some IR transparent covering or something to make it look more like a standard light fixture, I suppose.

You have it backwards...850 is the standard IR that glows red and is visible by most cameras that are sensitive to IR light...940 is the one that does not glow but its range is much shorter...

From sea or from air .... Op would be best moving .breathing saltpeter is bad.

Only other option is ........... Op has flying cows going over his home and cameras and taking a pee.

Saltpeter (commercial made in mass) is made from cow pee
