Can You Outsmart a Balun?

Recommended Posts

Picture this: An 8-camera digital CCTV system with DVR in a rack with entertainment system components. Monitor and mouse for DVR control are less than 100 feet away. The wired USB2 mouse is connected by CAT6. Everything in this system works perfectly, BUT the mouse hangs, disappears or refuses to operate with 3 different USB baluns: unpowered, powered at receiver, powered at both ends (Gefen), all rated well over 100 feet. We've already replaced the DVR, which plugs into a power conditioner. DVR is USB2. Both USB ports on DVR were tried.

A test with a laptop gave flawless mouse operation with the Gefen over the entire run, on both unshielded and shielded CAT.

Possible Clue: the mouse works fine for 3-4 days with each new balun, then fails and refuses to work again. (Not tested with laptop.)

Installer says he's used extenders on these DVRs before, without problems. Ever.

He's stumped. My computer consultant's stumped. And I'm in over my pay grade.

We've obviously missed something. But what?? Can you help?

Thanks.
