Both units should be able to cope with the same PSU, the wattage is the maximum demand upon the adapter, so as long as the adapter can cope with giving out 5W@15VDC then the 3W unit can cope with that. 5W is approx 0.3A, so a 1A 15VDC PSU would do several cameras.

The Dedicated Micros NetVu enabled units operate in a similar fashion

Don't know exactly, it works in Firefox, though the image continually reloads - I'd suggest looking at it programatically and snagging the image stream.

Yes, wipe the drive completely and format fat32. Download the firmware from the DM website, and copy the files from the extracted zip file (less the FTP app, you don't need that and the readme) onto the drive. Insert the drive into the machine and it'll unzip and set itself up for you.

BTW results from my experimentation. DVTU/DVTX's are happy with >500GB drives, DVTR's can only cope with 500GB drives, and I've not tested one with a pair of 500GB drives yet...

Edit: D4-D4DU? that sounds like firmware for a D4, not a DS2.

Been playing with my DVR's tonight, and found that the DVTR's don't like 750GB drives. The DVTU I have here works just fine with the 750GB, and the DVTR does see a 320GB IDE that came with the DVTU.

I need to test with a 500Gb unit, but suspect there may be a limit on the DVTR's around this capacity.

Have you experimented with SATA drives? I've had good success with DM kit and Sata>IDE adapters...

Paxton's Net2+ will do this with a single controller and server. You just designate one reader as "Clock In" and one as "Clock Out" and it'll deal with it.

If you have multiple locations/buildings, you just pop a seperate Net2+ in each location, tie it to your network, and it's job done.

I've mentioned Net2+ as it's the newer product with built in ethernet, but the standard Net2 product will also do this, just that you'll need a seperate RS485 dongle and the TCP/IP on the Net2+ is cheaper to go for.

Appologies for dragging up an old thread here, but I'm in a similar situation.

The connections that DM uses that look like RJ11 *are not* RJ11. They are DEC MMJ Connections. CPC Sell a crimp die set for these, as well as the crimp jacks themselves.

My units are DS2A's without the CD, and only have a single Serial Port along with the twin MMJ RS485 Bus option.

Inside, both units have a board connected to what is probably the second serial port marked RSTCA. One unit has this connected to the serial port, the other does not, but it looks like it's a simple case of shifting one to the other if needed.

My 9-Channel unit doesn't have space for a second Serial Port, but the 16-Channel does. Both are DVTR units with the latest firmware installed from the DM Website (As they've had new disks).

Does anyone have any advice on which serial port or bus things should be connected to?

I have a DM DS2 DVTX (311) running v1.65 software. I can confirm that this particular unit will take 1TB SATA Drives, but you do need to use StarTech SATA>IDE adapters, some cheap ones I bought off eBlag didn't work.

A simple reformat with fat32formatter on windows 7, copying the firmware update into the drive and it's up and running. Dead easy.

I'd suggest looking at PC Based solutions personally, preferably a more mature IP based system, something like Milestone for example.

You could then use standard backup systems to take snapshots of the system on a regular basis, and have those stored on a autochanger tape system, or local disks etc.
