  1. Hello;

I am new to the world of DVR/Surveillance systems. I am a computer/network guy though, and want to setup a small surveillance system at my home and was hoping for some input/suggestions from the pros . The guiding principle on this project is "bang for buck." Something that is good (enough) quality not to feel/look/seem cheap, without breaking the bank. I can spend more, but I really wanted to stick to the 120-150 max area.

I would like to go the BNC capture card route (is my terminology right? - I want to buy a card to install in one of my PCs and connect the cameras to for viewing/recording) and plan on using 4 cameras (possibly adding 2 more a little later on down the line). So, I'm thinking I need an 8 channel card (unless they also come in 6 channel?) 2 cameras will be indoors and 2 will be outside. All will need night vision. PTZ not necessary but a nice feature.

I have neighbors that have possibly the worst kids I've ever met. Therefore, the outdoor cameras NEED to be waterproof (I guess they would need to be waterproof for when it rains, anyway though) and somewhat durable. For the indoor, I would prefer dome cameras, and if possible, somewhat of a higher quality.

Please let me know if this is realistic in this price range. If so, suggestions/links on amazon are MOST welcome and appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Dustin

P.S. I'm not 100%, but I'm pretty sure that the DVR software you use is up to you, (ie not determined by the BNC capture card). If so, can you please suggest a very simple - modern looking program? Doesn't need a ton of features, just scheduling and motion detection as well as storage management (archiving, only keeping a set time of recorded video before deleting, only recording up to a certain amount, etc)?

Also, being able to access remotely is a MUST! (Either web browser or app, doesn't matter).

"150" max is that per camera?

Capture card route is not the best regardless, cards are very limited to the kind of software they are compatible with....

    how important is image quality?

  2. Learn how to setup automatic switching between Exposure settings, so that the MOBOTIX camera can capture better quality images during day and night illumination.

To learn more refer to pages 29-37 of this new automatic exposure settings tutorial in our latest ANPR guide http://www.mxinstaller.com/blog/mobotix-anpr-guide-v2/

you do realize this thread is 4 years old.....

  3. Hi,

I have a DS-2CD3332-I camera, I am trying it to power with passive POE injector. Unfortunately it is doesn´t work, I tried with 12-24 1-1,75A adapter, and with 1M LAN cable.

Hikvision support emailed me that it is should work with 12V:

    Standard PoE switch is OK.

    Power Supply: 12 VDC ± 10%, PoE (802.3af)

Power Consumption: Max. 5.5 W (Max. 7.5 W with IR cut filter on)

Anyone tried with similar POE injector?

Are you plugging the passive injector to the 12v female plug or are you somehow trying to use passive poe via the Ethernet connection? How long is your run? Show us what parts you are using?

  4. Smart IR doesn't work on mine, but I'm still on 5.0.0, and they may have fixed it in the newer version.

I use WDR, set at 21, though some people like it lower. Too much WDR increases noise at night a good bit.

Did Hik add profile switching in 5.1? That would also help; you could optimize the two profiles and have it switch automatically.

I was looking for that option but I'm running the cameras I have through a Hikvision DS-7604NI-SE/P so I don't have that option. Unless there is a way to get into the settings bypassing the NVR. Unless there's a firmware update for the receiver.

I can't change the angle of the camera because it's pretty much maxed out on the angle. The doorway is narrow and I had to mount it high enough where it wouldn't be vandalized.

you would need to hook the camera up directly to your pc or network to make that change (you would need to power it tough via a poe switch or get via a 12v adapter.

Honestly that location is a poor choice because while it may not be vandalized you are most likely not going to be able to get a good shot....better off mounting it lower and getting a shot of the vandal before they touch the camera....or get the Hikvision DS-2CD2532F-IS which is about 185 on aliexpress....so you can mount it lower

  5. The farthest camera is about 80 feet. They are all set static, and they are all set to A moderate bitrate. Unfortunately, the clients do not have these hooked up to the web, and do not want them to be for some reason. So the video loss notification is out. There isn't even an Internet connection in that part of their building.

I did look back at footage and saw that the ones that did go out all went out at the same time. It's really odd.I have never had this issue before, and I'm stressing out big time.

For the record, I have replaced the switch twice, the router twice and each camera once. I'm thinking of biting the bullet and replacing the cable with cat6.

I just want to thank everyone that has given input. I really do appreciate it.

are the Arecont's using the same cable? if not it is most likely not a cable issue...

when you replaced the router was it for the same model? how about the switches?

is there any other device attached to the network other than cameras and switches?

are you overloading the switches are they gigabit? how many cameras per switch?

How is the power in the building, maybe connecting to a ups or voltage regulator would help

  6. If you are looking for a low light dome camera from Hikvision, the DS-2CD2712F-I is their best.

Like all camera manufactures, the 1.3MP/720P sensor provides the best low light image.

Thanks myiicu. Have you tested this with hikvision? Does the 1.3mp version of the same camera produce better low light images? (I can say that my 1.3mp dahuas have better night/ir than 3mp hikvision, but im wondering if its true with the exact same camera).

Also, is this improvement only with IR on and black and white or would I seen an improvement with the 1.3mp over 3mp if I forced day mode as well.

  7. They are Dahua IPC-HDBW3300 IP dome cameras. My distributor recommended the cameras, so I used them. I used solid cat5e 24 AWG cable. When the cam is not showing up on the NVR, I try to use the cameras assigned IP and still get nothing. They also have some Arecont 2255AM poe IP cams that were installed by another company that are doing the same thing.

I'll post some images when I go back to the site.

    Thanks again for the input.

First Dahua is not a no name camera and those cameras are very good. Where did you get the cable, because the specs provided do not mean that its solid copper just that its solid vs stranded.

ok..if the Arecont are doing the same its most likely a network issue...what switch are you using? what router?

are the arecont connected to the same power supply? or are they running separate poe?

  8. What type of cable did you run...did you make sure its solid not copper clad aluminum (CCA). Can you access the cameras directly outside the nas when they go offline? Where did you get the cameras? Can you show us an image of the interface so maybe we can figure it out? Honestly, going with a noname cam on a paid job is just bad business. Replace the cameras...

  9. My forwarding is external port 8000-8003 (http, rtsp, https,sdk)... The forwarding translate ports to local IP ports 80,1024,8080,8000...

Make sure the ipv4 default gateway is set to you routers ip address

as well as the preferred dns server to be your routers ip address..

I had this issue with my hik camera, it would not work externally until I did that (although it was working fine locally)
