768H x 494V; How can the TVL spec vary so much?

Tolerances are one thing, but doesn't explain a swing from 450 to as high as 600. A few percentage maybe, but not 10%. The resolution is usually directed related to price.
  2. No, via RS-485. Then there would be no need for a PTZ controller? Aren't you loosing some functions?

Do auto aperture lenses have any advantage?

Where you really have a real problem is with snow! Also, white garage doors, houses & buildings. The shutter can't increase enough to stop down the reflection. The price difference between manual and auto iris 2-3x lenes I have found is $10 - $30. Unless you are looking for a telephoto or a larger zoom ratio $50- $60 (US) should get you something halfway decent. Another advantage (unless you want/need this) is you don't have the 'strobe' effect (frozen rain drops for example).
  6. Why would anyone use CAT-3 anymore? There is very little difference in price between 3 & 5 (at least in the US) and 3 isn't any good for data lines anyway.
  7. If it is sold without a HDD, how would/could adding a drive yourself void a warrenty? Which decks require 'different' (non standard) HDDs'?

    "Blade servers'??
  9. Yes. IOWs', something that would eliminate the need for a separate controller for the cameras.
  10. That's why I always ask for other opinions. VST_Man; Ok, how about runs under, say 300'?

    PTZ controllers

Is the Pelco 'P' & 'D' the same as the Toshiba 'P' & 'D'? I came across this from Toshiba for a list of protocols; http://faq.surveillixdvrsupport.com/FAQRich.aspx What isn't listed?
  14. Where are you located? I would contact JVC first.
  15. I thought this would be a good idea since I see very little regardinf lenes. Seems to be just about as many lens choices as there are cameras. For anyone that has tried different lenes from different manufactures how about posting your choices here. Lens manufactures rarely spec resolution, if ever, so without trial and error and alot of testing, how does one know if the lens is the limiting factor with what you are looking at? For example, can I assume Rainbow are low end and Fujinion would be considered high end?
  16. A quick search turned up this camera was introduced in 1999 in the UK, but I couldn't find anything on it.
  17. Ballpark price range (US) for active baluns? Anyone disagree with any of the above?

    Hot cameras

Exactly what part of the camera is getting 'hot'? Do you have a IR thermometer to take some readings? As another posted stated, if these are actually too hot to touch, you best shut them all down now!

Other than the 'Pelco D' standard, what are the other most popular standrads?
  20. This very well written article came from CCTV-Focus magazine (Australia). Though much of it doesn't surprise me as I have seen alot of this in the video production product business. It really is a notice to the CCTV industry on just how poor a job they are doing (edit the 'dot'); cctv-focus DOT com/cctvfocus37_unravel.pdf (I will warn in advance, this is a tool to sell a Elbex CCTV tester, but it isn't anywhere near as bad as I have seen from other manufactures that publish articles specifically to sell their product. Sencore being the worst.) They also have a very nice full screen test pattern on their site; cctv-focus DOT com/tpg-8_cctvlabs_pattern_3_1.jpg
  21. Benefit of the doubt? He wasn't 'scamng' me. I was in sales long enough to know better.

    License Plate Recognition Cameras

You have some paranoia about someone pulling into your driveway??
  23. I completely understand that. I looked over the specs of the Panasonic and see it only does 15fps @640x480. The Toshiba does 30@ 640x480. It also does 1280x960, but at only 7.5fps. The Axis PTZ IP still only does 640x480 @30fps and that is $300 more than the Toshiba. Sounds as you are talking in the over $2k range.

    Separate section on lenses?

What would that convert to for a full screen? What would the formula be to convert lines per mm into a full screen number? IOW's for a 1/3" CCD with a 480l spec, how many lines per mm would I need to make the lens 'transparent' to the CCD (no degradation)? How about a 'sticky'?
