Yes, overheating can cause premature component failure. HDD's are known for their inability to tolerate high temperatures. If the HDD is getting hot enough that it feels like it could burn you when you touch it, that is a sure sign it will not last very long. Typical rating is 50 degrees Celsius but I typically prefer to see them running at around 40 degrees or less.

Oh, well. It still could be Java. We had the same problem and the only workaround was to install the Java applet on a file server that is running an older version of Java. Even then, each time we try to run the RAID's program, we get a warning message that says "This application will be blocked in a future Java security update because the JAR file manifest does not contain the permissions attribute." Hence the problem with Windows 7. It has a newer version of Java. Our file server is running 1.7.0_45 and 1.6.0_20. Our Windows 7 computers are running 1.8.0_25. Obviously, you would need to be running an older version of Java - at least 1.7.0_45 or earlier. Thankfully, our domain is closed to the outside world so Java can't auto-update or we would be unable to access our RAIDs except for the "traditional" way - via serial port.

Check Java security. Newer versions often lock down the system to the point that they won't access CCTV IP devices. Pretty common with Windows 7. I have a RAID system that I can only access by remoting into a Windows 2008 server because my desktop client's newer Java version blocks the device's Java program. Sometimes, you can add an IP Address exception to the Java Control Panel security tab but other times, you're screwed if you can't obtain a newer Java applet for the device. Sheesh, ak. Why not just spell it out? IP / MAC filtering means only the devices listed in the IP Address / MAC Address list you enter may "talk" to the device with the filter in place. An example: I have MAC Address filtering enabled on my wireless router. Only the devices whose MAC Address I've manually entered into the Address List can access my WiFi system. Others can't, even if they have the correct WPA security key.

Or just put the DVR/VMS in "Playback" and rewind to whatever previous time you want, say 30 seconds from "now", then "Play" the footage. Many DVRs and VMS's allow you to play back a salvo of multiple cameras in "synchronized playback" and many of those allow you to toggle maximizing one pane of the salvo, to see one camera full-screen, then back to the salvo.

I find it very difficult to believe a proprietary Analog HD technology with only a relatively few small manufacturers and VARs producing and selling products has overtaken market share from Dahua and Hikvision on their home turf. Survtech, the claim might be right. I am also monitoring the market carefully. Note that AHD did make some success in Korea. The AHD receiver chip set can also capture the conventional NTSC or PAL signal automatically. Therefore, its DVR could be cheaper than TVI's or CVI's, which probably need extra decoding(NTSC,PAL) chip set. China manufactueres are very sensitive penny-wise. Unless my world map is wrong, Korea is NOT China.

Muawiya, you're talking about two different things here. To view and record any CCTV system locally, your Internet speed doesn't matter. Analog systems, as well as HDCVI, HDcctv, HD-TVI and AHD all record locally to DVRs or NVRs. You can also view both "Live" and recorded video locally with no connection to the Internet. The same applies to digital systems, like IP and HD-SDI. Local viewing is not dependent on your Internet speed - it is dependent on the type of system, the speed of your private network, if any, and the capabilities of your cameras, DVR and any client computers connected directly to your CCTV system. Where the Internet comes into play is if you want to view "Live" or recorded video from a remote location, like watching the cameras in your house from work or watching your business's cameras from home. In that case, with slow Internet speed, you will not be able to view things as well. Depending on your system and your choices, you may need to view images at lower resolution and/or frame rates than you would locally. You may also only be able to view one or two cameras at the same time, whereas locally you can view many at the same time.

Are you saying you're in Nigeria and want to obtain CCTV cameras for an installation there or that you want to buy CCTV cameras elsewhere, like in the U.S., to install in Nigeria? There's a big difference. From what I can tell, amazon.com does not ship to Nigeria. There is also no Costco in Nigeria. I would assume that you can obtain a number of cameras made in China, Malaysia, Taiwan, South Korea, etc. in, or for, Nigeria. Also, be aware that the vast majority of analog CCTV equipment sold in the U.S. uses the NTSC television system standards. Nigeria uses PAL. The two systems are not compatible. Most of Europe, South America, Africa and Australia do use the PAL system so for compatibility's sake, you should concentrate on those areas for your analog CCTV purchases. The key issue I found was "Live" viewing. There are many VMS' that work very well for playback, although some are better at things like time and ease to create clips - especially at finding and marking beginning and end. But "Live" viewing is a different animal. The VMS manufacturer has to make a conscious effort to reduce latency to a minimum, minimize camera call-up times and simplify PTZ controls. I understand Genetec still has issues with "Buffering" popping up at the most inopportune times.

IV? I thought you were an Avigilon specialist. In our testing of a number of VMS systems, IndigoVision did have among the lowest latencies - on the order of 150-170ms. It does tend to provide the lowest latencies using their own hardware, including cameras and encoders, but also has tested relatively low with Axis, Sony and Bosch cameras. Their cameras are not cheap, though. 720P fixed are on the order of $800+ and their Ultra 2k cameras (1080p) are on the order of $1,300+. BTW, Avigilon tested the worst, at least using their own analog encoders (>500ms).

One word: interlaced. Most analog cameras deliver interlaced video. That is where one frame (actually field) of video contains the odd scan lines and the other contains the even scan lines. When an object is in motion, the resulting picture looks like this: IP cameras deliver progressive scan video. That means all scan lines are contained in each image. Shutter speed and image resolution also have an effect on the ability to deliver images of the license plates of moving objects but interlacing is a major culprit.

Neither will go that far, especially if you want PoE. Fiber plus local power may be the only option.
