HELP REQUIRED ON COMPLEX CCTV SYSTEM DESIGN

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

My company has been approached by a local company asking to put forward a quotation on a new development site which requires CCTV.

Basically we just need to clarify a few things up and was after some advice and guidance please. Please also see the attached site plan, i have placed blue sqaures to show possible fixed camera locations and red squares to show PTZ cameras on existing lighting poles.

The site is a privately owned village which requires CCTV to cover main areas of the houses back & front. My questions are mainly to do with the wiring back to the security office (as seen on the attached site plan).

Questions as follows;

1) would amoured rg59 be suffient for this or would we be better running fibre?

2) The site has street lighting , could the exisiting ducts be used to feed back to the security office? any recomendations on how to wire back to the security office from each camera. Can't seem to get my head around it TBH!!

3) Powering the cameras - could i take a local feed from the street lighting?

4) what would you guys do on this type of job, we are slowly expanding our business so your help is much appricated.

Thanks in advance

PELCO PTZ Cameras would be the best choice it can be minimum of 18 X .

WHY PELCO ?

You can run the control of the PTZ through the CAXITRON Protocol which would remove the need to lay a DATA Cabe in such distances.

Each camera point would have :

Camera with Houing incase of Fix Cameras .

Mount

Power Adapter.

The locally powered cameras are recommended as the Central Power to such disctances would add the cost of wiring and other technical details.(power loss etc)

Each Camera site with 24 VAC Adapter powered by the Locally mounted small UPS of 500 VA would be sufficient. (Picture Attached)

let me know if you need any furthter details.

Questions as follows;

1) would armoured rg59 be suffient for this or would we be better running fibre?

I'd recommend using coax RG6 as opposed to RG59 based on your distance for both fixed and pan/tilt cameras. Fibre is the preferred method, however unshielded twisted pair (UTP) would also be an option. I would use UTP over fibre as it is easier to work with. Ensure your cable is secured in conduit or armoured.

2) The site has street lighting , could the exisiting ducts be used to feed back to the security office? any recomendations on how to wire back to the security office from each camera. Can't seem to get my head around it TBH!!

I sent you a suggested cable routing which basically follows the fence line. This could be either affixed to the fence (in conduit) or buried. Routing alongside power ducts is not recommended. As indication, locations on the other side of the property would require trenching to the nearest pole. As well, each location would have a junction box for interconnecting equipment (fibre, UTP, alarm, power)

3) Powering the cameras - could i take a local feed from the street lighting?

You'd have to check to see if this is possible with the utility company. I'd home run power to the monitoring room, that way you have a central source at least for powering the camera, although if you are powering other gear, than local power on your camera towers is essential. I'm making some assumptions based on your image.

4) what would you guys do on this type of job, we are slowly expanding our business so your help is much appricated.

I would recommend higher poles based on the property, and to prevent tampering.

Do you plan on installing multiple cameras on the towers?

Any alarm equipment? or is this for surveillance only?

I would take the simpler approach. I would run a dedicated UTP (Cat5) cable from the central office to each camera. As long as you are under 1200 ft. you will be ok using passive baluns. Use any PTZ dome you feel fit for the application with a local power supply at the camera.

You can run one pair of UTP for video, and another pair for Data, and still be left with 2 spare pairs at each camera.

Fiber is expensive, and tricky to run and terminate.

Good luck

That is not recommended. It is not good practice to run low voltage copper and high voltage wiring together in the same conduit. In many places it is illegal per building code and otherwise, it is dangerous and can expose users to electric shock hazards. The only cable that can be safely run in the same conduit as high voltage is fiber.

Powering the cameras - could i take a local feed from the street lighting?

Possible, but not likely. Street lighting is often quite high voltage, 440-480VAC and you would have trouble finding a camera power supply that would handle that input voltage. Also, some street lighting is switched by a common photocell controller that runs multiple lights. Your cameras would then turn on and off with the lights.
