Access and CCTV integration

Recommended Posts

Dont know really, turned down at least 1 access job as it required a locksmith and the client didnt want to really spend any serious money, but we are working on getting a locksmith to work with us, where we do all the CCTV, they do the locks and access, the other company does the alarms .. and maybe home theatre will come into play somewhere as that is also a big thing now in the new gated communities.. That way we all do our own specialised area but work together on everything, and in a small country like this, and this being the capital city, could pan out very good. Most of the other companies seem to have a couple thousand or so clients ... so add that up and you have the majority or the entire country!!

What ideas do you have?

Rory, you do not need locksmith to install access control equipment and electrified door hardware. If you can install a camera and make adjustments, installing door hardware is much simpler... Never turn down a job!

It does not matter whos equipment you use and what is the mechanism to open the door (cards, keyboards, proxi or scrambler keyboards), they all work the same.

Ge has some very interesting product lines going from low end to high end access equipment. Well, the door hardware will always be different, as it is dependent on the door being electrified from from simple strike to completely modifying the doors internal hardware.... The most popular one that we use and which is the most dependable is from Von Duprin, but then there are doors that you will need hardware from other manufacturers or the customer can not justify costs for high quality door hardware.... and you do not have to be a locksmith to do it nor you need special expertise - just experience and over time, you will do most of what locksmiths do....

Umm, beg to differ, you have to have experience in locks and doors to install strikes, and have the tools to do so. If i got into Access Control and do it properly, I wouldnt have the time to do CCTV, properly.

I can clean pools real good to, use to be a painter, and did landscaping for a couple years, but that doesnt mean im going to do those jobs now. Thats the problem today is too many people are doing too many different things, and not concentrating on what they do best. When you see some cameras installed by a locksmith, you are going to normally find they were not installed properly, and for sure if i go and stick in an access system and start digging the door up, its gonna look like crap

thats why the alarm and locksmith companies call me to do their CCTV, and why i dont go near access or locks.

Rory, you may be right and I mean really may be... because in your case, you just want to specialize only on CCTV. There is nothing wrong with it...

If you are in the security business and in CCTV maintly, it does not take much to learn access control or specially installation of electrified door hardware. Tools? Well, you will reuse everything you already have and then all you need is a dremole tool to cut or to shape the doors (providing that your doors are made out of metal) or to adjust the door's hinges and closures... Yes, it may seem difficult, but like anything else you do, you learn as you go... You did not learn CCTV overnight did you??

It is called learning curve. If you really want to, you will learn it and then that also becomes yet another trade that you can rely on. Door hardware is commonly available everywhere and it does not take much to learn how to...

Nah dont want to touch it, too much like construction work, liabilities etc. CCTV is much easier and I stay within the technical part of CCTV mainly and let the others handle the labour work. I installed alarms for 6 years but cant stand it so i dont do that anymore, also, too much time spent on CCTV now to do anything else.

If i wanted another trade, honestly plumbers and electricians are making all the money now.

The only other thing I may get into, is Home Automation as those jobs are megga bucks down here ... like crestron or Amx.

Rory,

I can clearly see your point. Thing is I did Access Control then CCTV. Here in the states we are starting to see end users awarding contracts to 1 dealer for all the low voltage. The end user is wanting to only write the 1 check. I have been seeing this more and more. Dealers here are now doing CCTV, ACCESS, Telephone, any thing low voltage. What I also see many companies do such as yours is bid on the entire low voltage job and sub-contract out. This would be a good way for you to get the job and not pick up a piece of equipment. The only thing you would need to be involved in on the job is the integration with your cctv. If you look at Keyscan's access control, they integrate with more DVR's than any other access system I know. There integration is very simple. You just need the IP address of the DVR and which cameras are associated with the alarm. Programming is very simple and if your not doing the access portion, you just need to tell the access control installer what the DVR's IP address is and let them do the work. Another thing with Access Control you have to pay attention to is Fire Code. Especially if you are using mag locks. But like I said before many people up here are bidding on all low voltage for the project

Jigsaw (or I prefer a Fein saw) to cut the strike in, that's the hardest part. Anyone can put in a mag lock.

I am in Long Island, NY, but I was busting Rory's chops on the straw hut comment (he's on a rock). I do alot of card access-usually goes hand in hand with CCTV.
