What Dell computer to use for an GV-1480A 16 Channel?

Recommended Posts

Would you please tell me what Dell computer from the Dell.com site you would purchase for the GV-1480A 16 Channel? I was told by a Dell sales person not tech that the Inspirion 620 would be fine.

I'm also at the point of needing a more powerful computer for my Geovision system.

I presently have a Dell Optiplex GX620 Pentium D (dual core) 3.0 ghz w/4 MB ram, a single 1TB hd and WinXP and a GV1480 card. I have (8) 600-TVL cameras and 6 microphones and the CPU utilization is staying at 90% or better.

I'm looking at either these three Dells...

optiplex 990

precision T3400

Vostro 460

http://www.ebay.com/itm/220883128290

They are all in the same price range. I plan to go all the way to 16 cameras and several more microphones.

Thoughts? I *really* do NOT want to buy to small and then regret it.

Either with the new i series will perform very well, much better than what you currently have. The i7 @ 3.4GHz will definitely leave you with lots of room to grow.

I went with the Optiplex 990 tower. i7. 3.4 ghz, 4 GB ram (will bump to 8 or more) 500 GB hdd, Ati 1 GB video card, Win7-64. etc.

I had to get some cables to adapt the SATA power to LP4 to power the card. And, added a 1 TB hdd for the video files. I'll likely add an external eSata enclosure for some more space.

It's all working fine. CPU utilization rarely gets above 5 - 6 %. Quite amazing. I'm now thinking about getting another one to upgrade my server to SBS2011.

thanks guys!

Chris
