balun or encoder?

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I have a range of cams that are analogue and others that are digital and I want to record onto an IP network device.

I wanted advice on getting the analogue camera content onto an IP network. For example I have an Extreme CCTV EX82 and an Extreme CCTV EX45 here that both have BNC connectors, but I want to connect them to my switch using Cat 5 / RJ45.

Can I just use a Balun that has BNC on one end and RJ45 on the other?

Or do I have to use an Encoder?

Thanks for any advice

Use Balun then to connect DVR so you could link internet via DVR. it would be more cheaper and scability than video encorder

Don't use baluns if you want to record to an NVR which is what I assume you mean when you say record to an IP network device. Baluns will not transmit through a network switch or any other IP device.

Axis has a bunch of very good encoders http://www.axis.com Personally I've been using P7214's and M7014's and I've been very happy with them.
