HD IP camera recommendation please

Hi

I would greatly appreciate some suggestions on an HD IP camera for the following use.

It will be placed in an ROV behind a clear dome in a watertight cylinder for under water live navigation and recording use.

So obviously it needs to have a day night feature(although there will be lights) high frame rate(at least 30fps, no latency at 1080p) and the best hd image possible.

I dont know how many megapixels it needs to be(I guess at least 2mp).

It will be displaying on an HD Android tablet via ethernet and it will be the only camera on the network over a 250ft cat6 cable.

It will have a separate power source so no need for poe.

I have looked at the arecont and axis range and cant decide as I hear good and bad things about all of them.

Please help out if you can.

Interesting. Don't know any zero latency IP cameras as it has to process and compress the video and then send it across a network.

 

There are good and bad in most camera brands and quality depends on budget. First, Axis does not make a 2MP I know of. They have 1MP, 3MP and 5MP in their P33 domes, good cameras, day/night. I bought an Arecont in the past, was not happy with the quality, service was non-existant so I got rid of it.

I have been noticing a lot of negative feedback on arecont quality and service.

I am trying to get the best possible image on my hd tablet for navigation and recording,price is always an issue but I am willing to go high if it meets all my requirements.I also dont think there is a zero latency ip cam but one with very low latency will suffice.

What about frame rates, do high fps rates not make the image more fluid?

I heard there is a new chip coming out for ip cameras that will enable 60 fps without binning.

Should I wait?

I'm personally happy with 15 fps and you get good fluid video. It depends on your purpose. High frame rates, like 60 fps are ideal for casinos that are trying to capture slight of hand tricks to see if someone is trying to cheat the casino. In a typical surveillience situation, I think 30 fps is overkill. The long standing frame rate for movies that were shot on film was 24 fps and nobody complained about jittery motion.

 

Imagine this, you are indoors, normal indoor lighting, your exposure rate may be 1/30th or 1/60th/second. You would be lucky to see 30 fps even with a camera capable of 1,000 fps.

I think you would be lucky to find a camera with much better than 1000 ms of delay.

If you are navigating an ROV underwater, latency could be a concern. Seems like any IP based solution will have a certain amount of latency due to compression codecs. You might consider HD-SDI.

 

High frame rates might be useful if you are trying to capture fast motion objects. Seems to me binning in a low light application such as this is a good thing, but I could be missing your intent.

I dont know much about hd sdi,i would have to research it in order to decide.

The main reason i am looking at an hd ip camera is that i can access it via network browser on my hd android tablet and it will be connected via a 300ft cat6 cable which is already part of the rov's tether.

The biggest drawback would be the latency.

How far can hd sdi cameras transmit via their coax cable without requiring a repeater of some sort,and do they have an image as good or better than ip cameras?

The biggest problem with all this is not being able to test this equipment in a real life scenario in order to pick the best suited choice.

I am also obviously trying to avoid any extra cost on unnecessary features.

Any more suggestions?

You might post a question in this forum's HD-SDI sub forum.

 

I have only experience with the SMPTE 292 and 424 varieties and you are correct, the high bit rate signals do not travel very far on coax. I believe there has been some development of a version just for security cameras and it has a more tolerant format. Not sure what the bit rate is but the 1.5 and 3.0 Gb/s stuff is hard to work with. Although for production, it is great. Usually it is transported on a SMPTE fiber cable. Expensive stuff.
