I have a hatred for humans who steal hard working peoples stuff. So that is why I have cctv....

I also am a techy nerd a lil bit and it's somewhat of a fun toy....

My system is just for residential use.

i started my working life in electrical and then moved to security install and servicing, now my own boss i install for customers of my own, i have a residential system linked to my laptop and mobile iphone so that i can show clients what they can do with the technology, plus it keeps the intruders and burglars / theives at bay and if something does go on then we have the recordings to see whats happened. ps i run a 16 channel dedicated micros sprite 2 with high speed domes ptzs and statics.

The one thing I really love about CCTV is that it never lies, it evens things up a bit and

gives the would be criminal more something to worry about instead of the victim always being the upset party.

Sure it's not perfect, but until we have police officers on every corner, it'll keep the criminals worried or concerned.

(not all of them obviously)

By the way it's Jan 1st 2013 here in the uk so Happy New Year everyone....!

I like the ability to keep people honest and to prove who was doing what when they start being dishonest. I've got a home and a business that both suffer from trespassers and thieves to one degree or another. Turn your back for a few seconds and you can lose a grand worth of stuff easily if someone's quick. Give them 5 minutes at night and it's like Christmas to some people. Not putting a camera over a cash register these days is almost foolhardy. I also like videoing prowlers who try to get into my locked vehicles so I can give pictures to neighbours who forgot to lock up that night.

It also gives you a chance to see the honesty of some people when it counts most- when they think they're alone. I've got one neighbour who not only pooperscoops his dog but he prebags his hand and catches it before it hits the ground. Not even any crap smears on the lawn to get on your feet or the kids' toys or whatever. Awesome! All people should be as considerate as this guy.

Add in the fun of watching the local wildlife and it is enjoyable as well. I laughed pretty hard the other night watching footage of a fawn eat an apple next to my wife's car. She had hit the car starter and the fawn's face popped up next to the hood when the parking lights popped on for a sec and the horn tooted. Then the headlights came on when the engine started and by the time the camera adjusted to the extra light (under a second) the fawn was nowhere to be seen and the apple was laying on the ground. Poor thing.

I've always been interested in CCTV, just because it's a way to have remote eyes on a specific location for a secure reason. When we bought our first house this past year I was beyond excited. It's a great neighborhood but it doesn't mean it's a free-to-be-naive card either. I set up two cameras, one out front and one in the back. Both sides of my house are entirely covered by these massive massive bushes, so front/back was more than sufficient. I order a lot of stuff online and I often do IT work on the side, which sometimes requires me to buy parts for somebody. The last thing I want is to take a loss because somebody decided they wanted the mysterious brown box on my porch more than I did.

My system is exceptionally simple. My cameras just save their 24/7 recorded feeds right to my NAS over Samba. (I'll never buy cameras that don't have this support built in again) No need for a DVR/NVR, just a straight up simple file server which I already had prior to getting CCTV to begin with.

We have our first child on the way now, and already I'm feeling the protective side of me kicking in more than I've ever felt before. We're going to have a family soon... so you can bet I'll do whatever I can to ensure everybody is safe at all times. It's very reassuring to simply roll over, wake up my phone and see instantly what might have caused that noise outside.

I never cared much until we got cameras at work, which I monitor. It not only made my job easier, but WAY more effective. And then I got to thinking, I've been sitting at work all night for years with no idea what's going on at MY home, so I installed a system. Now I keep watch of work and home. And the thing is, once you have 'sight', you can't live without it. When a camera is down or the internet is down, you feel blind and uncomfortable. And yet I saw nothing on screen for years, so you get hooked and reliant real quick. For me it's interesting and fun for the system itself. It's the gear and good pictures of what I need to see. But honestly no matter how good I can see, I know it's likely the recordings will fail me. You have only to watch the nightly news to understand that to most criminals, cameras are merely and inconvenience, not a deal breaker. The recordings are just a bit of possibility it might lead to ID. So primarily, I rely on them for keeping me on the front lines in real time, so I can make the calls and react in the moment, rather than relying on a recording to solve something terrible after the fact. Of course recordings are a must, but for me it's all about real time monitoring and that I really like a lot- the most fun of it. And I have two ptz's to play with as well, one at work and one at home. So I have a great time staying 'on the job' all night.

I would agree with that, it feel like someone has cut off your head when your system isn't at your disposal.

I have clients that are very calm and relaxed most of the time but when a camera goes down I see the other side of them

panic stricken as if their life were in danger

Sometimes cameras capture something entirely different, This video made me realize that although cameras sometimes have more a bad connotation than good, we still need a little faith in humanity. LQMbJ5XUR68

any video is subject to misinterpretation, you have to be very careful

not to get the wrong end of the stick, when you see something it's not

always what you think so a little caution is called for. I always remind

clients of this when they are new to CCTV.

I realize that I'm "Johnny come lately' on this post - but I enjoyed it so much I had to add my two cents. Several yrs ago my neighbor's teenage daughter had a crazy party when the parents were gone. Drugs & alcohol. Police were called, and yard tools such as shovels & brooms were thrown over the side fence onto my roof & some stayed while some tumbled to the patio below. Parents would never acknowledge ANY responsibility at all (still don't), and never replied to my two requests to please help gather their tools & beer cans from my yard. Shortly thereafter, my cameras were up - one of them facing my rear gate and due to proximity - also happens to partially look over their fence.

They're still very upset that I have a camera there, and even as recently as last week their younger daughter threw a large ice cube over the fence (7 foot high) from inside their side door. I happened to be working in the yard, and noticed it as it began to melt. I used my DVR to confirm what happened, and then went over and asked the parent if there was a reason for the ice cube. There was more denial by both parents & child - & I was cursed at by his lovely wife. So, needless to say, they've earned the camera - that will be replaced in a few weeks with an IP No appologies from me for placing the camera!!

Cheers,

Jim

If it runs over twisted-pair, I've always tended to be interested in it. I bought a Vivotek camera off NewEgg 1 month ago for where I work. It was $100.00 off. Then I bought another (mistake). Then I bought a 7200 RPM USB3 4TB external drive and a USB3 card. Then I bought Blue Iris. Then I bought a 4-port 1GB POE switch (mistake, should have bought 1GB 8-port POE). Then I bought a Dahua IPC-HDB3200C. Then I bought another HDB3200C (mistake). Then, yesterday, I bought that Costco Swan 2fer deal for $349.00 (not a mistake - can take 'em back if they suQ). So I got it bad. Real bad. The only upside is that the machine I'm using as my dedicated Blue Iris server is a dual Xeon 3.2ghz (an old Dell Precision 670 workstation) and too many cameras is about to choke the processor. Seeing as I can't afford a new video server, said chokage shall preventeth Q from procuring any more freakin' cameras. And from making anymore rookie mistakes. This will slow me down causing Q to learn before initiating more cash burn.

Unless I decide to videoize my home.

I got it bad.

What a great thread, glad I found it! Loved the video Odesys!

Q2U, That's how it starts...

And no, there is no 12 step program to deprogram you.

I got into CCTV by necessity. We live way out in the wilderness of BC and as soon as we had the high speed wireless, I got to work on my system.

There was a fellow who used to be on here, Sean, who was selling new and used CCTV equipment and I found him by searching with google. It was through him that I found this forum and have been learning ever since.

I have a good friend who owns an electrical supply and contracting company and he was impressed with my set up. He recommended me to another friend and another, and they have friends and away we go.... I haven't quit my regular job yet but the notice has been given for the end of this summer. Lord willing and the crick don't rise, I will be doing this until I retire in about 10 years... Then, it's into the motor home, left turn signal on, and we're heading South every winter!

Hi There,

At my point of view, CCTV Camera is really very interesting as 67% burglary incidents get reduced by installing CCTV cameras and it extensively use in organizations, casinos, shopping malls and homes etc.

Thanks!

Don't forget to install CCTV in your motor-home too, but you need cameras and a DVR that do not require regulated voltage or buy a 12v to 12v regulator.

I found your story of how you got started very interesting.

Amazing thread, and some great stories too.

I brought my first system for home use, i have 2 kids with special needs and every time they left the house we moved too they were picked on. After living her for a few months and my children not enjoying the out door life as they should I decided to talk to some local residents and found out we live in a bad area .

Speaking to police and then made the jump to installing a basic cctv system with just 2 cameras to allow my children piece of mind. Its was a huge step forward, my kids actually went out knowing if there was an issue i could deal with it, i did not have to attempt to make head or tails of what really happened and it cleared up the issues. Now i taken on neighbourhood watch in our area and have upgraded to a 8 channel system which have caught so many issues from theft to anti social behaviour. The local police love what we have done, the neighbours even said they would chip in towards the costs, and now we moving to a 16 channel system to help more of our neighbours.

Its piece of mind for all my family and neighbours that are worth the time, i could never go back to the fact how it really changes the way people act once they know there cameras on them, the issues have dropped so much, the bad side is that they just moved to another area and the trouble now worse for others.

Thanks Numb!

Yep, the coach will have to have cams too! http://www.windshieldcam.com/

As for the business, the easy part was getting the recommendations. Now I actually have to work!
