Reset a brand-less CCTV DVR

Recommended Posts

Hi to everyone

I am a computer forensic examiner. I have been requested to extract video from a brand-less CCTV DVR which was recovered from a fire scene.

After cleaning smoke residue etc the recorder was powered up. As the Admin password is not available nor any information about the supplier, a few attempts were made to enter default passwords without success.

After trying a suggestion of holding in the Auto/OK button when powering on was attempted the recorder went into a firmware update mode and now will not move past that point.

This is a vital piece of evidence which I would be happy to pass to someone who knew what to do, but it appears these people do not exist.

I have attached three photos showing the front panel, system board part number and the monitor screen "F/W UPDATING"message.

Can anyone recognise this recorder or offer advice on what steps I could try next?

Thanks in advance.

Remove the internal battery and leave powered down for a few days.

This should allow the eprom to lose all previous settings and reset back to default.

Then try the basic default passwords like 1111, 0000, 0123 etc.

Unfortunately I can't supply a photo of the user interface as that only becomes visible after the boot up process has completed. The boot process hangs after "starting Up" message when it moves to the "F/W UPDATING" message.

I am trying the suggestion to leave the CMOS battery out for a few days to see if that will kill off the corrupted boot update process, however any suggestions/ideas in the meantime greatly appreciated.

I don't want to try the drive out in another CCTV DVR because I have read of many unwanted reformats occurring when a foreign disk is installed in a CCTV recorder.
