looking for a VMS software with very low latency

Recommended Posts

I am in search of a VMS software or NVR with very low latency. Who is the fastest? Do you guys have any recommendations?

Usually, the "latency" depends on the speed of the network, not on the device itself. Most dedicated NVRs will do close-to-realtime decoding.

In time-critical conditions, there are alternative MegaPixel solutions (not IP-based).

The application is a IP based video system that is used to operate equipment, this is why it needs to be low latency. I know that IP systems inherently have latency, but I need for the system to have the lowest possible latency, we commonly use Avigilon, but it is no where near fast enough. We do have some custom built software that is fast, but support for it is near impossible, and it is very limited.

That's why I recommended Indigovision.

Have a look at http://www.indigovision.com/

What is your application?

IV? I thought you were an Avigilon specialist.

In our testing of a number of VMS systems, IndigoVision did have among the lowest latencies - on the order of 150-170ms. It does tend to provide the lowest latencies using their own hardware, including cameras and encoders, but also has tested relatively low with Axis, Sony and Bosch cameras.

Their cameras are not cheap, though. 720P fixed are on the order of $800+ and their Ultra 2k cameras (1080p) are on the order of $1,300+.

BTW, Avigilon tested the worst, at least using their own analog encoders (>500ms).

If latency is important then then indigovision is a good choice but if you're looking for ease of use solution that is easy to deploy and manage then Avigilon better option.

Alot has changed since you tested Avigilon years ago and even some of your feature requests have been added

LOL. Good to hear. I understand even Pelco apparently took my evaluations as a learning experience but Genetec didn't.

Funny, I heard they have decided not to go after the casino vertical any more. I even heard Zeb was transferred to another division. Haven't heard from him since right after I quit IPVM.

The key issue I found was "Live" viewing. There are many VMS' that work very well for playback, although some are better at things like time and ease to create clips - especially at finding and marking beginning and end.

But "Live" viewing is a different animal. The VMS manufacturer has to make a conscious effort to reduce latency to a minimum, minimize camera call-up times and simplify PTZ controls. I understand Genetec still has issues with "Buffering" popping up at the most inopportune times.

Not sure if that's the case with 5.3 since they moved a bunch of the load over to the GPU.

first of all what switches are you using ?

are the cameras/ encoders on the same switches as the recorders ?

what hardware is in the recorders ? SSD / flash

what are the types of nic connections ? GB or 10GB and above ?

All of these things will / may have an effect on the traffic latency before you even look at the vms
