Setting up a HIKVision DS-8716HI-S

Hi Folks, I just picked up a HIKVision DS-8716HI-S DVR unit with only a couple of outdoor IR cams that seem to be poor quality. I need some advice on which cameras I should look at for the best resolution for a domestic 1/4 acre house block. Also some pointers on how to actually work out camera positioning for the best coverage. Any & all help appreciated.

That is one nice old unit. I guess this is a used/old/cheap unit?

 

The maximum resolution it will record is 2CIF (704x288 PAL or 704x240 NTSC) at 8 frames per second, so you can use whatever analog camera you want with it, you will be limited by the DVR, not the camera.

I needed to get some sort of surveillance system on the cheap, as I am currently on disability & trying to stop an absolute nutter from persecuting my missus & kids. I am just looking for any & as much advice I can get, so I can build a system that will atleast stop, if not catch him smashing our windows & thieving our property.
