Alarm cable for video

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to reuse alarm cable for sending video signals down. The runs are short >15m.

I am just pricing a job which would be very difficult to run in new cables. I have been asked to replace the pir alarm sensors with covert pir cameras.

The sensors are wired up with 6 core alarm cable.

Any ideas?

Can you use the alarm cable as a pull string and pull the new cable into position?

Failing that, you could go for NVT or NIT unshielded twisted pair units.

Your existing cable is not recommended, since the system can become very susceptible to interference (degradation of video display) whenever extraneous signals are present if not using twisted pairs.

Give it a try to see what type of video product you get at the other end and then go from there.....15 metres isn't that far.

I'd pull in new cable if I was you.

Cheers.....Rapid

If its standard Telco wire typically used with Alarms, then you could have issues anything over 20 feet or so. If its cat5 or twisted Pair then you can buy Baluns for short distances. If its a long distance look at amplified or even the passive TX and RXs from NVT. Ive used Telco here before at my appt and at 20' was okay, extra 5 feet was warped out .. i had another camera at 40' and had lines going through it, not that visible but still .. so its up to you.
