Best type of cable for CCTV?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

First of all, my apologies if this is not the right area of the forum to post this, and also my apologies if my English is not perfect.

I'm a Spanish student of telecommunication engineering and I was wondering if any of you could help me with this task I was given by my "Wired Networks" teacher in my university, because it's driving me crazy.

I was asked to look for information about wiring in CCTV, specifically types of cable used and their properties, and also connectors and other accesories. I've been reading some posts here and visiting different websites but I still not sure.

Until now, I've got evidences of RG59 and UTP being used in CCTV, but I would like to know if there is any other type of cable that is also used in CCTV. I have read in some websites that RG11 and RG174 are also used, but I'm not sure. This tasks also concerns the evolution of the cables used since CCTV began, so I would be very grateful if you could give me any clue about it too.

In this task, I was asked to only considering "electrical wiring" only, so fiber is out of my analysis (I have read that it's a great option though...).

Thanks in advance!

RG174 ( commonly called mini-coax ) is not suitable for cctv baseband transmission. It has a characteristic impedance of 50^ and is most commonly used for GSM , GPS etc anntena cable utilising SMA/B connectors.

So I guess RG58 is not suitable either, right?

Yes, you are right.

I think I panicked a little because the deadline was near and I has too much information to look for. But I think I have already what I was looking for.

Thank you!
