  1. Well, this is relevant: Hope I'm not dredging up, seems this thread is rather new...

Happened today at 3:42AM! I was sleeping, jumped out of bed and thought a bomb had gone off...! Turns out it was gigantic strike, probably within 100yards of our house. Fortunately no fires... But I think you can hear a tree falling in the background. We live in rather forest-y area so lots of big oaks around to get hit.

    woah!

  2. Hey Luke,

What size is the dome? 5" 8"?

Is it just the plastic lower dome or the whole pendant that's damaged?

I might be able to help.

    Cheers,

    John

i don't know the size yet as i still don't have access to a ladder to get the thing down.

yes, it is just the plastic dome that is damaged.

but i live in the UK, would P+P costs be high from America?

I don't think it would be too bad, Luke. I bought a couple lower domes a while back and would be happy to let you have one if it will fit.

When you get a chance to get it down, measure the inside opening of the dome ring. we'll see what we can do.

    Cheers,

    John

okay, thanks John. i'll PM you when i get it down. it will probably be a few weeks yet though.

  4. long story short, the dome of my PTZ has been servilely damaged.

    it is intact, but damaged.

    i have a few options.

buy a broken PTZ from ebay and transfer the guts of my camera into the housing of it,

buy another camera (has to be the specific VISTA powerdome to work with my DVR) from ebay, they pop up every now and again, and sell my old one which is fully working apart from the dome.

or, find a glass/plastic dome to replace the other, damaged one. just the dome though.

    what would you suggest?

i know its a long shot, but i don't s'pose any of you have a powerdome gathering dust do you?

  5. Can you plug a monitor directly in to an IP cam or NAS? No. Can you review, rewind, copy files from an IP cam or SD card without a PC? No. I need a self contained unit with one channel that the client can operate without a PC.

you're asking for help, for free.

i'd be a bit more polite if i were you. i'm amazed people are continuing to help you.

  6. the shed is the first place i installed a camera!

how good is your electrical knowledge, and are you any good at DIY?

i could give you instructions on how to build a simple system like i did. as well as the DVR, the TV is also simply hooked up to the system with a modified SCART connector so that if someone breaks into your shed the TV switches from whatever you're watching to the live feed from the shed camera and sounds an alarm in the shed, and in the house.

  7. i like what axis cameras do. although there would still be a bit of the problem if the lens was pointed right down and the rain was at a sharp angle.

unfortunately, i don't have much money. so i have to make do with what i've got. i would LOVE an axis system. lol

  8. one of the main disadvantages of my dome cameras is that when it rains, big water droplets end up in front of the lens blocking the cameras view.

i have thought about ways to overcome this issue and the best/easiest solution i have come up with is to put something above the lens so that when the top of the dome gets wet and the water starts running down the dome, the water will be 'diverted' from blocking the lens.

do you think this is a good idea?

have you done it before and had success/problems?

could you suggest a material to use? i was thinking KULK or silicon or something because it is easy to put on and once it drys, it sticks quite well.

here is a little diagram in case you don't understand what i mean from the description.

  9. Here in the UK...

Seriously determined crims will always get hold of weapons but a lot of the potential for crime is removed. If the price to pay for that is that I do not have access to weapons, I think thats a price worth paying.

    +1

  10. i wanted the CCTV cameras but they were all external and it would of been a pain getting them so i didn't bother.

I'm sure you wish you had gone through the pain of getting them all before the demo.

    Never the less, nice take.

    i know right!

i could of had 9 more of these things!

oh well, we learn from our mistakes.

  11. ah cool,

i think one of the advantages of your plugs is that they're 'flat', the cord is at the back rather than the bottom so if its laying on the floor... the pins don't stick up.

standing on an upturned UK plug is a horrible feeling!

this is what our sockets look like

a clever student came up with this idea but it does not comply to regs because of something so it doesn't look like it will take off :'(

i won't even ask about your 208V... i think I've derailed this thread enough.

  12. There is nothing illegal with recording neighbors in most of the US. There are plenty of Youtube videos of "neighbors from hell" caught in the act. About two years ago, I got into a dispute with a neighbor because he was dealing drugs from his house and his visitors were blocking my own driveway as well. I ended up putting up a "Do not block driveway" sign that ended up ripped down. I also ended up with a flat tire when I ran over screws thrown into my driveway. I ended up lining up one side of the house with cameras all pointed at him (total of four). All of my problems suddenly stopped once surveillance was obvious. If your cameras are obvious enough, the "roaches" may scurry like they do when someone turns the lights on.

either that or they make your lives hell.

i don't think i would like to make it obvious i was grassing on my neighbours. especially if they were drug dealers.

there is a big 'drug problem' in a neighbouring estate, piss those drug dealers off and they burn your house down/shoot you and your family, etc.

An automated teller machine (ATM) of Punjab National Bank was found burgled in east Delhi’s Geeta Colony on Thursday morning. The incident came to light when a security guard found the ATM broken and without any cash. Police said that around Rs23 lakh were found missing from the ATM.

Ramesh Kumar, a security guard told police that when he reached the automated teller machine(ATM) located at 7, Geeta Colony, he found the ATM to be broken. He informed his employer and police about the burglary at the ATM, according to police.

A senior police official said, “A PCR call was received around 7.30 am in this regard. The ATM belonging to PNB was found cut with gas cutters. There was no money left in the machine. A case of burglary against unknown persons has been registered at the police station.”

Police said that the ATM was refilled with Rs28 lakh cash on Monday. Around Rsfive lakh was withdrawn from the ATM before the burglars targeted the ATM on Wednesday night and fled away with around Rs 23 lakh.

A guard posted in the night has been absent since March 6, 2012. He had taken a leave on the occasion of Holi. With the absence of CCTV camera at the ATM, police have not yet identified the burglars, the official said. Police suspect that the burglars are well-trained in committing such thefts.

A manhunt to identify and nab the burglars has been initiated by the local police.

    i think good on them.

in my opinion, if you are a good enough criminal to rob an ATM and not get caught, you deserve the money. its not like anyone got hurt, and the banks have insurance.
