  1. Assuming you already have a PC or Mac you can download Sighthound (formerly called Vitamin D) for free if you use just a single camera. If you add cameras then you start to pay a licence fee. The only thing you need to check is that the camera you buy is compatible which fortunately is easy by checking the compatible cameras list HERE.

Look through the list and find a camera that you have seen and like check compatibility and I assure you it's simplicity to set up

and records directly onto your computer's hard disk drive

  2. If you have a proper body camera, why are you trying to fit an outdoor IR camera

into an outdoor camera housing when it's already got weather protection?

You've already stated it's not because of vandalism, is it purely that you like the look of

an outdoor housing? They are designed to allow you to use a traditional body camera, most

of which won't need IR even in quite dark areas (true day night cameras).

I have seen an IR camera mounted on top of a dead camera housing because the client was

'too mean' to pay to have the dead camera removed,

If you just explain what you want to achieve then maybe someone might offer a solution. good luck with your project.

  3. Hi I think you are worrying about nothing at all really. Before DVRs became common, the Quad used to separate the cameras to be viewed on a single screen (MATRIX) and time slice the recording so that they apprd to be recording all at once. If you watched the tape on a standard VCR you would see quick brief images from each camera in turn. When played back using a quad these appeared quite normal. So the quad had two main functions, but nowadays modern equipment being digital, these function are combined into a single BOx.

Multiplexing is also combined into one box on a DVR because they are digital. Multiplexing is performing several tasks simultaneously. Nowadays that includes several users being able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.

As I explained before, digital technology has allowed all these tasks to be combined into a single box which includes the recording function. This has transformed the CCTV recorder (DVR) into an affordable device that is not beyong the poacket or budget of a wider range of people and organizations.

In terms of the future, there is no real need to worry about these functions as they are easily handled by any practical person that can read an instruction manual.

a CCTV Matrix (in very basic terms)

    Created bt a quad

  4. Hello Hugo.

The reason the system you have is unrepairable is because the manufacturer wanted it that way. They ignored standad connectors in favour of something the majority of home users could manage. A marketing decision I am certain.

Unfortunately, there is no simple solution, other than replacing everything. The GOOD NEWS of course is that you can use the existing cables to pull the new cables through. A good technique in using PVC insulation tape is required and maybe use some liquid detergent or car wax to lube up the cables.

Don't buy a new system and not get the best out of it just because you don't want to re run cables. It's definitely worth the effort.

  5. This is now where I start saying that a service call is required when I do attempt to assist clients on the phone etc.

Where are you getting those Port Values from?

Is there a RTSP Port value, if so try port forwarding it to the camera's RTSP port and allocate to the camera's LAN IP.

Beyond that, I am mystified why you wouldn't make life easy for yourself and use an NVR or some form of encoder as a front end?

  6. I have recently noticed a new trend in getting spam emails. The spammers seem to be sending emails pretending to be attaching a bill or recent transaction invoice and Card Debit. Of course you don't recognize the transaction (which you wont have made) the immediate reaction might be what's this lets have a look. BEWARE OF TROJANS and SPYWARE.

  7. Ig your public IP is ststic you would type that into the address field but if it is dynamic like most domestic accounts, it changes and would only work until it changes again. What you need is a DDNS account and hostname. By creating a hostname, your NVR can update the DDNS server when your public IP changes and by entering your hostname in the address bar, it directs all traffic to your network. If your port forwarding is done correctly, the router will forward requests for data to your NVR.

Creating a DYN dns account is simplicity itself and creating a hostname is even simpler.

Once you have a DDNS account, remember its username and password and the hostname you created and enter these into the NVR's DDNS settings then each time your router changes it's public IP address the NVR will update the Dyn server. Depending on your router you may be able to enter the settings into your router also.

  8.

You need special baluns; I can promise you that. The standard passive video baluns I've tested with this stuff have produced video, but only at a fraction of what it's supposed to be.

    Sure u need special balun

TVI and CVI use up to 35-40 Mhz bandwidth

    ( NTSC up to ~5 Mhz )

That sounds reasonable, so presumably, one would need true 75OHM BNCs when using coax...?

  9. I know someone whose house and other buildings are bugged. Must there be microphones for sending/receiving on site,or can that be done without tresspassing on private property. Perhaps the 1st thing they have to do is have home and property swept. I just want to know if the devices exist to do it without actually planting equipment.
That got very strange. Are you setting up a system for your own security or to spy on neighbors? Strange wording.

    Way too much CSI

  10. Frankly I would try and install with the existing baluns but not unless I had the newer ones available just in case. Based on what results I have heard the whole advantage of HD is lost by degraded signals which isn't surprising to me by way of a gut reaction.

If I knew how the inductance values affected transmission I might have a better understanding of what to expect but this manufacturer seems to indicate this is an important issue.

  11. I had this email from one of the Chinese manufacturers and it appears that specific baluns are required for al the new analogue types and at a 2/3 distance I have yet to see these on the market bt I am told that Dynamic in Middlesborough will be bringing these in.

  12. There is no ONE WAY to do this. My own system works fine for me and frankly may not suit your way of working.

Don't forget to include a nominal sum for consumables or this could eat into your profit hard.

Another I found is itemize only what the client will get, not what it costs, just give a final figure

because ultimately that's what REALLY counts.

I have a spreadsheet all set up and I can change my profit for any job or individual item by changing a single cell.

I copy off similar jobs to a new sheet and modify all from the top down. I have been winning far more work and made a better profit since I started to use a spreadsheet. Open Office has an excellent spreadsheet and it works well for me. Best still, it's FREE

    Good luck.

  13. Obviously not convinced they'd be any use, its that attitude we don't care to pay money to a technician to fix the problem then they'll moan and groan when something happens that might have been recorded but for their laziness or greed.

Ive see cameras with cut cables at the rear with a sign beware CCTV Recording it's laughable.

  14. sorry to laugh but I have had similar mishaps but I've been lucky not to suffer broken bones

Hope your little piggy is recovered now. It's the smallest injuries that hurt the most sometimes, splinters, fiberglass irritations etc.

Not my only mishap ever I assure you. One potentially deadly one that springs to mind we worked at a place surrounded by double yellows and the only place to park was a narrow raised area adjacent to the building. I parked it very close to the edge as we needed access to the side loading door on the nearside, When I got out the ground was about a foot lower than the surface we'd parked on.

Just imagine if this had been and further or lower I might have disappeared out of sight and without a parachute.

Also I am always parking up only to find I parked adjacent to a huge puddle!!!!!!!! (Whats that you say?) No chance, I moved the van...

And one christmas I was given a double tool belt, loaded it up fully and climbed a ladder only to have the tool belt dislodge my trousers to my ankles and my apprentice couldn't stop laughing long enough to rescue me, (pull em up for me) needless to say the toolbelt was consigned to the garage ever since. You were right mum, always wear clean underpants!

We try to learn from our mistakes but inevitably we don't
