  1. That would depend on your software - some can use the PC's built-in sound.

You could also try ATEN. This system for example: http://www.aten.ca/data/solution_new/ipkvm/page5_3_onnet.html "Upgrade your legacy KVM installation to an IP-Based Solution External Over-IP solution (KVM on the NET™) is an external over-IP solution. It allows you to enjoy the benefits of remote "over-IP" access and control of your server room by providing over-IP functionality to traditional KVM switches. It protects your original KVM switch investment, since it isn't necessary to discard your original equipment in order to achieve over-IP capability." It's designed to connect to an existing KVM, as well as a computer... meaning IT DOES NOT HAVE TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE COMPUTER; it's not a remote desktop type system, or browser-based on the remote end. If it will work with a KVM, it will work with a standalone DVR.

I would suggest contacting Startech - I would be surprised if they don't have something suitable. This unit does VGA and USB over an IP network: They have this VGA-over-IP extender: http://ca.startech.com/AV/Extenders/VGA/Ethernet-to-VGA-over-IP-Converter~IPUSB2VGA - doesn't appear to have anything that would support IR (serial control might handle that) but if you can control the mouse on the DVR, you should be good to go.

That's the back of the Startech unit I linked to above.
  5. We've installed a ton of the CC3701H-2s for a client that insists on them; they're a decent color camera, although not nearly as good in low light as the CC3751. Check out any of the CNB cameras with the Monalisa chipset for good low-light performance - we use the VCM-24VF extensively.

soundy from posts way back it is vga to KVM ....... the one you have listed has no connection for VGA .... Really? Then why does the back look like this? Looks to me like a standard connector for a VGA/PS2/USB KVM cable...

Yup, Vigil's is very similar to that...
  8. HDMI over Cat5 can get expensive too... haven't just used this in a project, I found that all the "cheap" adapters require two Cat5 cables... the ones that work with single Cat5 tend to be in the $300+ range.

I assume you have never been to court where video is evidence in a crime? It has to be in it's NATIVE format and documentation provided for the type and manufacturer of the equipment and the chain of custody of the evidence. Likewise - I always recommend to our Vigil users to use the native export option ("MJPEG" on older versions, "Authentic Video" on newer versions), rather than the AVI export. AVI is readily playable on almost anything, but it has no timestamp information, and no way to verify that it hasn't been edited. The native Vigil format includes full timestamp, resolution, framerate, and even POS overlay info, and the player has a "Check Authenticity" button that will confirm that the video hasn't been edited or tampered with.

    Horozontial Sync?

Check out some sites like DealExtreme: Under $200 Doesn't say what its range is or anything, but these things are rapidly getting cheaper and smaller - this one's about the size of your average smartphone. Here's a little fancier one for a tad over $300, similar form factor to most pro-grade multimeters:

So... they post a sample to YouTube, you complain about the quality and it's not a valid comparison. You insist on a real, unaltered clip, so they provide it... and you won't install the player to view it. You're obviously not interested in actually seeing the results, you're just trolling.
  12. Should work fine. It's twisted as well, but the twist shouldn't give you any problems with the mic.

    Horozontial Sync?

I'd love to have a scope "just because"... might be nice sometimes for troubleshooting really weird cabling problems... but no, I've never needed one. You're not losing frames, because like I say, aside from a very few, ancient input-switching units, each camera is being input and processed separately. A DVR is recording every camera individually, so technically everything is buffered anyway.

    Icicles on my PTZ

That's great. Stand under those sucker for a while. The house I gew up in had no gutters- the icicles were really that bad. Swords, really. And we kids used to eat em like some kind of treat- from the dirty roof. Gross. How did I do that! That IS the house I grew up in No attic, no insulation under the roof... all the heat from inside went right through the 1" shiplap roof and melted the snow Nope... that thing was there when we bought the place. No idea what it was for, maybe to hang a bird feeder?

thats for a pc ..... so network out of pc to ip KVM that works. he is looking for VGA to ip KVM then out to network. you cant send vga video without it being compressed. Tom... look at the photos of this device: http://ca.startech.com/Server-Management/KVM-Switches/4-Port-USB-VGA-IP-KVM-Switch-with-Virtual-Media~SV441DUSBI Tell me how it connects to the network ports of the client PCs to be able to control them while they're still on the BIOS screens. OF COURSE it's compressing the video - nobody said it isn't.

Indeed they are. They are very successful in the high end and corporate size installation market that they have so far made good roads into All I am suggesting is that the small business and domestic sector (which the core product seems to be heading toward) is not a sector that readily accepts the model used. Most small businesses and domestic buyers would wish to test any quotes or prices either online or over the phone with another provider before proceeding. Not everyone cares about catering to EVERY market segment out there. Catering to the lower common denominator means competing against every piece of cheap junk that China floods the market with. It means having to support noobs and wannabes who think they can just slap together a system of high-end, high-traffic gear without knowing what they're doing. It means a lot of extra headache dealing with people who want to nickle-and-dime you to death at every turn. With few exceptions, we stopped selling and installing for "mom and pop" operations years ago - these are the jobs where they always want the cheapest deal, need their hands held on a constant basis, always want everything fixed "under warranty" (yeah, your system we installed six years ago was just blown up by a lightning strike... I don't think so), and generally just are not worth the low margins for the amount of time expended. We have enough big clients to keep us busy enough that we don't have to cater to the lowest common denominator on a regular basis. Works for us. 3xLogic follows a similar model - works for them. Seems to be working for Avigilon too.

And with a model like this, somehow manage to still be attractive without publishing their MSRPs. Imagine that.

"Reboot attached systems, access the BIOS, and have full control over the keyboard and mouse - as if you are on site" - how would it do that if it wasn't simply taking the VGA output and piping it over the internet?

Look up the MSRP on a CNB VCM-24VF. Pretty sure what we sell them for is higher than this... but we also have a longer supply chain to go through when importing them. Remember, the S stands for SUGGESTED. Not SET. The manufacturer can SUGGEST a price; that doesn't require anyone to adhere to it. And the R stands for RETAIL. If I can get it cheaper, I can sell it cheaper. If I have to pay retail, why should I be required to charge retail? I might as well just tell the customer to go buy his own damn cameras, if I can't mark it up. Given that "MSRP" is little more than a vague hint ANYWAY, what's the big deal if you can't look it up? There's no set formula for factory vs. wholesale vs. retail cost markup - would you feel better if the manufacturer themselves tagged an extra 20% on their stated "MSRP" so their integrators can still make a better margin without "appearing" to apply a bigger markup? Get over it already. It's a different business model that seems to work for them... like it or lump it.

    Horozontial Sync?

I don't what's changed between then and now... I did take a bit of broadcast video training as part of an audio production program back in the late 80s and I know using genlock to sync was a big deal, but mainly to avoid the "flipping" problem you'd get switching from one camera to the next. The only thing that does that now on CCTV would be a low-end video switcher, and if memory serves, the last time I used one, it did still do that... but those sorts of switches are pretty much obsolete and I haven't seen on in use in years. DVRs, multiplexers, quad processors and the like, all digitize and process the video, so sync issues really don't exist anymore.

yes it can be done and easy. IF pc based. this guy only has vga out on a standalone They have only VGA and USB connections, why wouldn't they work on a standalone? There's no special interface to the PC.

Nobody's talking about it because it's not a problem anymore
  24. Same camera - the 21 is the PAL version, 20 is NTSC. No idea why one would be $60 more... Tom's right, you REALLY need to look at a new supplier.
