  1. Ok then... So I have been rather busy with other things for the last year or so and had almost forgot that I was a member here. I was looking for something else when I discovered this old post.

Now I seem to have been disappointed in the lack of responses to my post, but it looks like the video I had attached didn't attach! I hate that!

    So without further ado...

    281422_1.mp4

What it is is a 4 channel mobile DVR with 3 channels used. Channel one is the "Dashcam", a 700TVL camera, and the other 2 are 420TVL units typically found as backup cameras on RV's or garbage trucks and the like.

I put this on my truck as an experiment a couple of winters ago and wanted to share this clip with y'all...

  2. I'm tellin ya, these things are a Godsend. Without that video footage you would have had to explain what happened, while the adjuster rolled his eyes and found ways to not pay up. Glad you're OK! Critter hits can be totally unpredictable. You're very fortunate you clipped it in the butt because just a split second sooner an you could have nailed it square on and launched it through your windshield. Not a pretty sight.

I am pretty much unimpressed with the dashcam offerings out there though. Wading through piles of cheap Chinese crap to maybe get one that you can depend on to give you evidence that can be used in court is a crap shoot.

  3. I'd expect black and white snow without outside interference. Does flipping off the halides get rid of the coloured snow? What about flipping off other lights or things that wouldn't be running and causing snow in the daytime?

    Thanks for the reply Kawboy.

The store manager is going to get back to me today and let me know what he found.

I suspect the halides but they said the last cams that were there didn't have this problem.

These cams have "Smart*IR Vision". I'm also wondering if that could be an issue...

  4. I have a small job resurrecting an older analog system. The owner bought it and had it installed 5 years ago. It promptly quit working and the jerk that did the install was long gone...

He simply gave up on it and it's been sitting ever since. I tried to sell him on a new IP system but his budget can't go there. So we compromised...

Its a Digimerge DVR with assorted cameras. The two outdoor cameras were vandalized so I replaced them.

    Here's my problem...

The day time image is as good as can be expected for analogue. But the night image is very grainy, with "coloured" snow. The cameras are Digimerge DVP24DLR's, on 12V because that's what was there.

There are two metal halide floods near by and I'm wondering if they could be an issue.

Any help would be great! Thanks...

  5. Hi there

I am looking for a CCTV system that can show both recorded and live footage from anywhere in the world (preferably cloud based via a web browser).

If it is a cloud based storage service, I'd need to know the capacity. This is something that neither Seedonk, Cloudcam, TrendNet cloud or mydlink list on their websites which makes me think they don't supply storage at all but merely the gateway.

Has anyone got any recommendations of a camera/DVR system which would do this or personal experiences?

    Thanks in advance.

Edit: I have just found IVideon. If anyone has any feedback about their specific service then I would also be grateful.

I was just about to start a thread about this device... https://www.dropcam.com/product

At first glance, it looks like all they offer is cloud based storage. The disadvantage of cloud storage is that you are totally relying on internet connections. From bandwidth issues to outages, it isn't without its drawbacks. Local storage, such as edge storage (storing data in the device itself on an SD card) then retrieving it through the web is much more reliable and cost effective.

  6. It seems to me that the Zellers liquidation has left a bunch of us scratching our heads.

Of course I'm assuming that is where you got your Intellex box. It has the same MO as myself and a few others who have been trying to make them work...

I was fortunate that the store I got mine from had the restore disks. Without them it would have been way too expensive of an operation and it would have sat on the shelf of shame. Too much money spent without researching what I was getting and too expensive to get it working. As it is, it sits on my bench. It works and I have few cameras hooked up but there's no easy way to connect it to my home network, let alone viewing over the net, and you definitely won't find any apps from the App Store!

As far as I can tell, Intellex is/was a high end system that would be more practical for large retail chains, like Zellers, who would have one in each store that could be remotely connected to a main administration center.

They really aren't interested in the small CCTV market. I hope you didn't pay too much for it....

  7. Hi all!

I've never installed a security camera system, but I've done some homework and believe it's fairly simple. I only plan on installing a 8 camera system at my one-story home.

Here is the deal and questions I have.... My home has a large walk-in closet about dead center. The alarm system is also installed in that closet. The family room, kitchen and breakfast room are all open (one big room) and the backside wall of the closet faces into them. I would like to install the DVR in that closet, but I want to mount a small led screen on the wall outside the closet so it can be seen from where we spend most of our time.

So, not knowing how the systems work.... Can I control the DVR from the other room where I can see the screen??

Yes that's not a problem .... Only thing to look out for is DVR to monitor connection. Some DVRs only have screen control via the VGA or HDMI and not from the composite output.

A good make Bluetooth mouse will give you 35ft range to control your system with.

Good point Tom. In my last install, the DVR was mounted in a lock box, about 50' from the users desk. We simply ran a 10' USB cable from the DVR to a discreet place in the main office and plugged a wireless mouse transceiver into it. Works like a charm.

  8. Ok then...

My other job is winding down and I can once again concentrate on the CCTV world.

As for this problem, I never did find a solution. I spoke with the customer last week and he is still wanting to get some sort of surveillance camera up and running.

As GB stated, we're up in Canuckistan, but that shouldn't matter too much. We still need a camera that is right for the application.

    Any ideas out there?

  9. After a cursory view of this problem, I have to ask you, have you contacted your ISP to see if they are blocking ports at their end? If this is the case, ask them nicely to unblock.

They are generally concerned about spammers getting a back door to their networks and block them as a standard policy. If they are assured that you only want to use the ports for your security system, they should be willing to unblock them.

It can't hurt to call their tech support and ask...

  10. I have just been asked by a client if there is any way to install a camera at his roadside produce stand. He has had problems with vandals spray bombing.

He has no power there and no internet connection..

I was thinking of an IP camera, powered by a battery that is trickle charged by a small solar panel, that would record to an SD card. One problem, he doesn't want to climb a ladder to retrieve the card every day but he does want it mounted high up in the overhang, at 13ft.

Also, he wants it to be as covert as possible. Yes, I explained the benefit of having a visible camera, but he wants to actually catch the vandals in the act, so to speak.

His season is just about to start, so he would like this ASAP.

    Anyone have any ideas?

  11. I'm also in BC.

Lot's of "good deals" in the US aren't so good after the shipping and brokerage fees are factored in...not to mention that most manufacturers won't apply any warranties to their products unless they're sold through approved sources... as in, most ebay sites.

Cheap junk is available everywhere. The new fact of life in the CCTV biz. Do I like it? No. But it does give me the opportunity to demonstrate the difference between "a good deal" and quality products with good after sale service.

Like I tell them, sharpen your pencil.

  12. As the world sat transfixed on the events in Boston last week, the one thing that kept coming to my mind was that almost all of the images that we were seeing came from CCTV. It showed the public that when it counts, the "big brother" cameras are pretty dang handy. There is no doubt that the suspects were being tracked, even though at the time, no one knew that they were the suspects. That is the beauty of CCTV. Hours or days later, the images collected suddenly become the all important "key" to solving these crimes, or what have you...

Here is a nice boost for our industry from a Florida newscast...

  13. Year ago maybe? It was before my time when the hammer was swung but I've figured out bits and pieces by watching posts since I've been here.

Huh... He was one of the most helpful guys on here. I don't like censorship in any form. I might not like what someone says but dang it, they should have a right to say it, if for no other reason than to be a bad example!

  14. First, welcome!

    Now as for the instructions.

My first foray into the CCTV world wasn't that long ago and I bought a new Qvis DVR. Made in China, but pretty good quality for my home system.

The instructions however, were almost impossible to decipher. They had English words but were obviously translated directly from Mandarin. It was so incomprehensible as to be maddening.

Now, when you say it has no identifying brand, have you opened it up and had a peek inside? Sometimes, not always though, but sometimes there is a clue as to the manufacturer on the motherboard or maybe a sticker on the tin in there.

There might be model numbers that you could do a search on.

And as for the logic, without some kind of ID on the unit, that's going to be tough...

  15. Sean got hit with the banhammer and is one of the sites that gets censored on here. Kind of foolish actually.

I can see banning the PERSON for crossing a line, but the whole changing names into periods, substituting one brand name for another, etc really undermines the credibility of this site. Who knows what to trust if posters' words are twisted and changed invisibly with no tagline announcing that some words in the post are lies through no fault of the poster? It's disgusting. I can understand automatically changing swear words into asterisks but when that happens everybody knows what is going on. Changing one brand into another? Deceitful and unworthy.

Dang... When did all this happen?

  16. Wish I had thought about their CCTV systems when I heard they were selling "everything". I'm from CanuckEASTan as well.

haha, yeah, everything meant everything... I got the idea from Sean from Ne!!y's, who is another one who has vanished from this forum. I remembered him telling me that when he started he bought used systems to resell. The PTZ I bought from him was from an old Target store actually. (weird. It won't let me post his name...)

So I now have this amazing, expensive as heck, DVR sitting here, hoping to find a good home. I did get 12 cameras with the sale, as well as two monitors, 3 TV's, and about 2 miles of cable. And, just for good measure, the guy I borrowed the skyjack from gave me all of the extension cords that were up in the ceiling too, about 1000' of them!

But until I sell the stuff, it's a capital loss to me...

  17. What a great thread, glad I found it! Loved the video Odesys!

    Q2U, That's how it starts...

And no, there is no 12 step program to deprogram you.

I got into CCTV by necessity. We live way out in the wilderness of BC and as soon as we had the high speed wireless, I got to work on my system.

There was a fellow who used to be on here, Sean, who was selling new and used CCTV equipment and I found him by searching with google. It was through him that I found this forum and have been learning ever since.

I have a good friend who owns an electrical supply and contracting company and he was impressed with my set up. He recommended me to another friend and another, and they have friends and away we go.... I haven't quit my regular job yet but the notice has been given for the end of this summer. Lord willing and the crick don't rise, I will be doing this until I retire in about 10 years... Then, it's into the motor home, left turn signal on, and we're heading South every winter!
