Just cause it has a bad sector does not make it a bad hdd. If it has just a bad sector, or even a few bad sectors, dont trash the hdd. Get some software that will tell the chips that control the hdd to remap that bad sector! Am I allowed to post a link? If not, my applogies. Anyways, Rory, if you really wanna try and SAVE that hdd, try Spinrite to solve that problem. Granted, if it's a large HDD, it just might not be worth it. However, I have saved many a data by using this software. Just to give you a heads up, a 40gig hdd can take up to 6 days to recover!! Just depends on how many bad blocks it has. I use this on all hdd's that doesnt suffer from head splatter, or head knocking syndrome.

well what is your problem? I've setup many of these dsl modems from AT&T/BELLSOUTH. Kensplace - your using the supplied adapters that came with your dsl modem so that you can use your phone at the same time right?

Well as some of you know, I started out in here doing alot of reading. Helping out with a busted computer or 2. However, life took a sad turn from mediocre to absolute (censored). My buisness that I was trying to start up died before it even got off the ground. I really dont want to go into details of what happend. I dont think any small buisness should ever have to deal with I dealt with. I hate florida. I despise florida. If I had any money left I would leave this (censored censored) hole. Ive bought and used Antec powersupplies for years. They were on the top of the list when AMD used to test and recommend powersupplies on their website. If I was unable to get an Antec due to time constraints or whatever, there was a local shop to me that used to sell Sparkle PSU's. There were ranked in the top 5. Whats disappointing, is AMD no longer does that kind of testing and recommendation. However, I still use and recommend Antec.

WOW! thats quite a bit to go through to be a(n) CCTV installer. I am guessing/assuming that also means that you install alarm systems as well? I wonder what the rules are for Florida. Guess I'm gonna have to get off my tuccas and find out if I have to have anything else other than low-voltage liscense, contractors liscense, and insurance bonding. Hope theres not much more needed.

I read the specs on the one for the 20"... very nice... it has a 600:1 contrast... and a whopping 15ms refresh! nice find!

the computer will "skate" by.... a 3ghz computer should start at 300-350watts. Add a(n) SATA drive, and you better start at 400 watts.. Ive seen too many probems arise from not having enough power. With the way the new processors are these days, I wouldnt build a computer with anything less than a 400watt. Cause you know the moment you leave, the customer is gonna hook up everything he can to that computer.

I have an 8 camera system installed at my buisness. I usually have anywhere between 1 to 3 users spying on me at all/any given time. The connection I have is just a standard cable modem from the local cable company (road runner). It has about 48k upload ability, and no one has complained about getting slow pics or video. Now of course, this is "time lapse" when its over the internet, but thats ok, because the dvr is recording in real time (30 fps). If you want to be able to see reall time on 4 or more camera's over the internet at once, you will need a really fast connection. Look into FIOS, or if you have deep pockets, get an OC12.

Glad you finally got it working good for ya... For some reason, it seems that almost all DVR cards really prefer and need ATI cards. Maybe its cause only ATI supplied cards when they were making the dvr card? who knows.... Anyways, would like to see the new pics ya go going, and congrats on a getting your problem fixed.

I know that Kodicom makes a large number of cards. I'm also pretty sure, that most of you know which are fakes and which are real by sight. However, i've only been into CCTV for 5 months and still learning. Sadly, I just spent 4 hours searching the net for a client that was having problems with his "kodicom" card. Turns out, its really an AOPvision Card. I would like to be able to take some pics to him to show him the differnce between the Real Card and the Fake card that he has. (he refuses to beleive his card is a clone, probably due to the fact he paid too much to begin with!) Long story short, can we compile a picture list of REAL Kodicom cards along with their model numbers? This will save me alot of time with the new clients im getting. Ive already got a few pics of some of the generic/clone cards and who makes them.

That is very helpful information to have. I had read where someone said in another post they didnt sell cards outright, so (stupidly) took into consideration, that they sell to big companies, who then sell to this dealer or that dealer. It is nice to know that I will not see them as a card only sale. Thanks for the information.

Im not fimiliar with the GEO card yet, however, the way the pic's show to me, it looks like you have a video card driver problem. When you stop the program, and look directly at the desktop, are the colors nice crisp and clear? or do the look washed out like the squares that dont have camera's on yet? If that were in my shop, the first thing I would be concentrating on is definatly the video. Goto Leadtek's web site, downlod the latest video drivers, update the drivers, (does the GEO card use directx?) if it does, download the latest version of that as well. Once youve updated the drivers, go into the video control section of the operating system, and make sure that the color quality is set to its highest setting.

if this is not the correct sub-forum, please move to correct forum for me please. While making some cables for a(n) home installation, I used 2 piece bnc crimp connectors with some Siamese rg59 cable. I was curious on how well I was really making this connection. I know my video is nice crisp and clear, but I honestly do not feel comfortable that I have made a good connection. It's like one of those things that bug you just enough to keep you awake at night hoping and praying you did a good job. Some of you when you first started out im sure you had that problem. Anyways, sorry sometimes I go off on a whim. What I was wondering, is there a tester out there that I may purchase that might actually test the quality of the length of cable, etc. etc. I can always test the cable for continuity, make sure it's not shorted out. But I was wondering if there was something out there to make sure it can handle the bandwith, etc. etc. Thanks for the info.

Could you please send me some links and references as to why you prefer a copper ground braid over aluminum? such as that used in cable tv cables. Although, I know copper is a way better conductor for a ground, I was just wondering if there were other reasons. Thank you...

Just thought I would pop into here and say hello. Ive been reading these forums now for the past week trying to find all the information that I can. I like what I see.

Well from what I see, the responeses are friendly. Even when someone messes up and posts in the wrong area. Im also interested in starting up a cctv buisness in my area as the closest one is 50 miles away. So Im reading about all the differnt camera's and dvr cards. I currently own a pc based dvr and I am somewhat pleased with it's performance and recordings. So, I'm learning alot while reading in here. I also have 18 years pc experience and certified in repair and building. I should be able to help in that area while learning the other parts.

Well, youve changed out everything according to your post. From what I saw you posted, you changed out quite a bit. When you changed out the motherboards, did you also change out the CPU and/or the memmory? You still could be possibly facing an overheat problem due to the heatsink attached to the cpu is not completly getting rid of all the heat. As I said, before, you can STILL do an OS install. Take those drives out that you have, set them aside so that they do not get touched. Install a new hdd. Remove the tempest card (can it be removed? or did they put a tamper seal across the board?) and load up what ever flavor of linux it's running. This will tell you alot. You dont have to install the drivers for the card until your ready to install the card. Have you noticed what flavor of Linux it's running? Redhat? Slackware? Fedora? Debian? (I could go on and on here!) Im sorry I dont have any experience with the Tempest card and drivers. However, I do have extensive knowledge in PC's. Anyways, what you can do, is after the machine has been running for an hour, open the cover, and physically touch the heatsink on the cpu. If the heatsink and fan are doing their job, it should be warm/boderline mild hot. If it burns you, then you definatly know thats your problem. You may want to consider also looking into memmory fans as well. Let us know.

Well, you can build your own pc for relativly (sp?) cheap. The worst problem is going cheap on the cpu fan. Which in turn, causes over heating problems.

Is it a complete hard lock? what I would suggest is starting with the actuall hardware first... since you probably have one of the machines in your possession... format the hdd... do NOT install the dvr software for the card... get all the drivers installed, and update the os with all the patches.... While your doing this, take note to see if you get a lockup during these processes.... if you do, then you might want to look at the memmory, or possible heat problems. Make sure the computer is pulling in and blowing out air in the proper places. If it is, open up the case while after it's been running for awhile and carfully touch the heatsink... if it BURNS, then the fan on the heatsink isnt working properly... If the cpu is warm to the touch, turn it off, replace the memmory...
