    Quieting a Cpcam 501\AvTech 781

A lot of manufactured products have overly powered fans to accomodate every location, what y7ou could do is introduce a resistor to the fan inline, you can then regulate the speed of the fan and hence the noise. I do this with my pc at home...it is in an old style wooden desk, I have made airflow by creating a hole near the bottom of the desk where it is enclosed and at the back of the desk is a large 12v fan run off...you guessed it a camera power supply, I use a regulator to adjust the spin speed and hence the noise. In saying that, perhaps it is a big and noisy fan for a reason, some chips do get very hot, but my PC allows me to adjust to low speed for winter and high speed for summer!

    Cat5 Cable + and -

I can see the point that baluns can actually save some time by being easier to connect, however when using a rack reciever, you firstly have to terminate the baluns with extrem care to measure twist, then you have to make fly leads to go to the BNC connections on your DVR, I know i could just use standard balun recievers and hang them off the back of the dvr, but it looks messy, so in my case I need to add the recievr rack, then the BNC Patch panel, then the flyleads and all must be labeled so to me its too much work. Now before everyoine says that this is not necessary, I do this for easy servicing and maintenance.

do you buy security cameras from China?

We are lucky, Bosch replace it same day and even send in advance...Altronix, give us buffer stock through the distributor and March also send advanced replacements

do you buy security cameras from China?

I look at it this way, my average projest would be at a bare minimum 24 cameras If I was doing ONLY 2x Projects per month then that would equate to 576 Cameras...and if each camera failed at some point that would mean my tech would permanantly be fixing and replacing cameras. I just cant afford not to buy things that last. I dont use brand names just because its easier to sell in some cases, I do it for warranty periods and QA, for Instance ...I mostly use Bosch...all three year warranty, I also use March Networks, which can also be three year warranty, and I use Altronix which is a Lifetime warranty...It means when up against someone I say to the customer... what is the minimum warranty you are getting on your system?..because I am offering a minimum of 3yr warranty.

    Cat5 Cable + and -

Ok so I have done quite a few jobs with Cat5 and Cat5e now and on the last one I made some comparisons... I noticed that if every camera was connected by Cat 5 that the picture looked excellent, that was until the last site...on this site I did 50/50 comparison, the problem is that unless you have something to compare against you wont notice that all the Cat5 run cameras have bad colour burst. I also noticed a problem called Skew, this is where any bright image produces a shadow next to it...hard to see at first and unlikley to be noticed, but introduce a very bright light and it is obvious. I later learned that Cat5E was a no-no without active Baluns, it has something to do with the amount of twists, it seems that unless you cut the cables and terminate with exactly the same amount of twist...then you risk the colour burst being wrong...this is not the case for Active baluns. I also did the sums...so ok Cat5 is easier to run (lighter) can take more bends, is cheaper etc...the downfall is it takes longer to terminate and if using more than one camera per cable, it means if that cable breaks you loose more than one camera. My verdict is that as long as you use Active Baluns then Cat5 is not as good as RG59

Setting up a PTZ to scan

This is just a wild stab in the dark....and most likely wrong, however perhaps you need to set the PTZ to Pelco D Protocol a lot of PTZ's will support Pelco because it so common, however some of them need to be forced into pelco mode. I cant remember if D or P is more popular and I dont know the correct baud rates and flow control settings, but also some PTZ's require termination at the end of line, IE if cameras wired in a series then you need to terminate the 485 signal at the last camera!

Centre V2/control centre and web server...

Why would the web server only serve 16 cams...not sure I understand, you can connect to multiple Geo boxs from the one Internet Explorer application.. why cant you just connect to both box's from the one page?

Dealing with bright and dark areas (at the same time)

You either need to balance the lighting or go for a Wide Dynamic Camera that supports masking (painting an area to affect).. or quite simply you could put up posts or bollards making the vehicles reverse into a very small space, then zoom in from the ware house so that the bright area is not seen...quite often we try to work around the environment rather that change it. If you could zoom in to a point where you no longer have the effect of the bright daylight and could control the area that the truck could stop within, then you might stand a chance. The best three wide dynamic cmaeras that I have seen thus far are. Panasonic - SDIII Bosch - LTC0495 Ganz - Wide Dynamic Camera

do you buy security cameras from China?

Threre are many pitfalls form buying from China and in fact importing from many Asian countries...however with that said it has improved a lot in the last few years, so please take what I say with a grain of salt. Here is what I have experienced; China is by far the cheapest ...it would seem that the good old USA decided that Japan was cheaper to manufacture in, so the Japanese decided to manufacture on their own...then they realised that Korea would be cheaper to manufacture in and Korea realised it would be cheaper to manufacture on its own, then Korea realised that China would be cheaper to manufacture in and ...there is no cheaper place yet. But quality control is the big issue...as mentioned above though it has drmatically improved, however the quality is not the same, ...now sure the specs read the same...even the same chips, but the electronics are cheaper and dont last as long and assembly and quality control is not as good..so expect some failures...with that said it is often just as cheap to buy 2 x Chinese products compared to 1 x European product. I used to distribute Ganz... or better known as CBC to the Asian countries... they had a very small failure rate because it was all manufactured in Japan, then we got some batch failures of a particular camera...and why....because this particular camera was made in Korea and therefore the quality control was poor, the same type products made in Japan were fine. I had also dealt with a company called Sunkwang or now better known as Korea CCTV, these guys are huge, they OEM to a LOT and I do mean a lot of product to many people..a lot of companies that would surprise you, however.....we had batch failures with these people as well. So in summary buyer beware... now I am not stupid enough to not admit that even big players manufacture outside of their home country...even Bosch manufacture in Portugal.... but in Portugal the salaries and qualifications are better than China so the quality control is still good. When buying in China keep this in mind...in China the populatiton is huge and the distribution to other cvountries is also a huge market, labour is cheap..so when selling in China you could afford to loose a buyer every day because there will always be a new one to sell to, so failing products are not an issue because you simply move onto the next company...but in Europe and other countries you just cant get away with that. In saying the hige amount that I have I will say that I think China will improve to the point where it will take over the whole market in CCTV manufacture.
  14. I dont know what the regulations are in your country, however running close to mains power here without good seperation distance is a NO-NO...If you are going to run the cable inside the pole, beware of the mains power.

    Windows Mobile 5 and Geovision

Having a few problems setting up my Imate Jamin... I have used the GVIEW app but do not have a site to connect to, has anyone tried connecting to the Geo demo site with the PDA. I also just tried internet explorer on the PDA, I get still images only, with a prompt to refresh the image, but can not seem to make it stream, i cant use G3 becasue I dont have it, at the moment I am using GPRS. On another matter, why the hell cant geo find a backplane box, those fly leads are ugly and easy to break, they should make a docking box that attaches to the vga style connections they have and then it has BNC connections on the other side of the box!

Dealing with bright and dark areas (at the same time)

Actually your right the lens wont help a lot....but response time and quality of ground glass can help withbright scenes, not a lot I admit, in fact in some ways it enhances it as there are less abhorations and therefore more light concentrated on the sensor...but haviung many elements in the lens can help to balance the light more evenly

Dealing with bright and dark areas (at the same time)

The lens can help in some respect...but the main issue is the WDR...Wide Dynaic Range...if you dont havea camera that supports this, then adjust your Gain Back ....dont use AGC, turn off BLC and increase yopur DC Level

    Graphic card problem????

Depends if the DVR card has DSOP Overlay for live viewing, this could be why your display is not working.... here are a few things to check.. 1/ Is there one card or two, if two is there a conenction between. 2/ Try different drivers, it could be a hardware overlay issue, but that would be more likely to give you broken pixels when zooming or pink screens. 3/ Check that you have the right resolution on the screen for the software and the video card and check that you arent exceeding the rating. 4/ Did you load the software drivers for the video card before the drivers for the DVR software? 5/ If the motherboard has onboard video...did you disable it in the bios?

    Dual monitor Setup Guidance

It depends if you want independant control of each screen, for example a basic option is what is known as a PC VGA sharing device, it means that you get a 20Meter (thats usually the limit) VGA, Keyboard and Mouse Extender and a small box, you can then control at the source and control 20 Meters away...I just bought another one and didnt use it.

GV 1480 and camera video lines (resolution)

That statement would be incorrect, H264 is a lossy compression and not a Lossles compression, therefore it isnt the BEST compression, you wont see much difference between 480 and 550TVL

    night vision questions

I cant say I agree with the above... You dont have to have an IR Cut filter camera, you could just go Black and White and the back focus or focus shift is not alwys related to camera quality. Yes, However most cameras with built in Leds (not all) are fairly week and cheap, the IR wont go very far, you can t control the IR Beams focus, thats why the UF100's are brilliant, you can choose the area you want to cover and spread your IR where you want it, they are also very good equipment. In Cheaper models you may have this issue, also when the glass gets dirty! Bike is right you will need to zoom in a bit, or run a second car battery and charge a spare one and record onto a car DVR this way your closer to the object, you may be confusing resolution with field of view, you need a face to take up 30% of the screen for identification purposes
  25. Just had a thought....what kind of pole is it...If it has mains power you may not legally be able to run in or...in some cases...outside of that pole
