I looked at the ip that the nvr assigned the cameras then connected them to my poe switch. when 192.0.0.64 didn't work I tried the ip in that was in the nvr and it worked....another way is to just put a switch in inline. on a side note you can actually put these cameras on the lan interface with the swann software.

  3. I forgot are you using the nvr, if you are it wont see the cameras on the other side. If you connect the cameras to a poe switch by its self...it will see them. if your using the nvr...you can plud a switch into the one of the ports of the 8 port switch get the ip out of the nvr and remote inb that way
  4. why would a NVR limit you As I mentioned, I use a combo of 4 different types of cameras at my home: Dahua, Logetech Alert, Foscam and Microsoft LifeCam. I'm currently testing a 5th type (Lorex). At my work, since I just wish a low-cost solution: Foscam and LifeCam (connected to PC's)that I had kicking around so I can get a visual of my server rooms to add to our remote software. Being able to see the lights on the server is a benefit, but not enough to warrant a higher cost of 'true' cameras. In my environments: Home and Work, using the USB cams are a great benefit to monitor the areas the PC's are in without adding to the network structure), and in my limited playing with NVR's, I find they work best with the same model cameras, but don't always play well with a 'mix' as I have at home. In my cases, the BI software gives me the greatest range of devices, and the options I wish. If I was going to buy a 'total' package I'd go with a NVR with 8 cams, but I like to mix and match. I don't run BI but in addition to this. I am thinking of swapping out the swan system for some better cams. All the NVRs from swann, dahua, hikvision only support max of 240FPS across 8 cams max (I think we touched on this in another thread)....Well then in my mind what good is having a 3MP camera if I can only record at 2MP at 30 FPS....Ok lets say I kick down the fps to 15...ok that helps a little. But ideally we all want the highest resolution video avail. At least with BI...at least I think. I can buld a box that will support 3MP cams at their full res @ at least 20FPS...(im still confirming this). Litterally the only reasons I havnt switched yet. Ive gotta build and support it. and where are my alarm inputs out puts

  6. So last night someone knifed some tires at my house...I got a video and some pics...but they are kind of grainy. Im asking two questions here. Would some one be willing to look at them and see if they can clean them up. Second question. I had messed with the noise reduction and sharpness.   9. That is quite a computer. I used to build my own but the prices on pre-made units are just so competitive for the specs. As for the last sentence I am confident that this HAS to be collusion between MS and Computer Manufacturers to encourage people to get new computers every couple years. As a rule I try to reformat my computers (at least the OS drive once every 12-14 months) it is amazing how much a clean install improves performance. I am running 9 cameras (4 1080p's and 5 VGA all running at 15FPS) with an AMD A8-5500 3.2GHZ (Nowhere near the specs of Q2U's CPU) and my usage AFTER changing to direct to disk is 33-35% when running as a background service and 60-62% when viewing cameras on the monitor. Does it do MD in direct 2 disk mode

  11. yes more memory usage but a far far far more efficient instruction set, it actually requires more swapping and processor time to run a 32bit app on a native 64bit proc like the processors we have today. My dvr (for tv) is a custom built box, running Linux and XBMC. It does live tv enconding and decoding. The same with streamed and downloaded content. When it was running 32 bit yes my memory usage was lower but my processor time was higher and I had a ton of disk thrashing. moving it to 64 bit Linux changed all that by 10 fold. Smooth as butter all the time, no disk thrashing, stable as hell, and very little processor usage.
  12. I did have my dit rate set at 3096 and yes that was an issue. I have since upped it to 6144. The cameras are set at 25/30 FPS "supposedly" I come from the government public safety side where out cameras are set at no less than 20 FPS. Which is what I want for my house, and it can be attained with out spending 4000.00, which is why I was looking at the acti cameras. Not to bag on dahua or hikvision, I think the acti...might be a better product when compared to similar products....then again maybe not, the sensor sizes are the same among other things The layout I have works great, but like it was said in my video clean up thread, at distances and the lighting this is where the lower cost cameras start to fall down. The swans are 2MP would a 3MP been better, how about 5MP sure maybe but then I run into the issue with I want all 8 channels recording at the max res. Lets be honest. Cameras are more of a deterrant than anything else. But when you need them dammit you want them to work like CSI...ENHANCE...ENHANCE like everyone else...I want the best camera for my money in my budget. max budget is 3K with more than 8 cameras and nvr and closer to 2K w/ 8 cameras and nvr Maybe I should just hire 'Machete'
  13. I currently have the swann kit from Costco. It was one of those "keep the wife happy" "do something now" purchases. There was no time for research. Other than best bang for the buck at the time. Now that its up and wife is happy, I can look around at potentially replacing the whole deal all together. That's not to say the swann doesn't work. but I do have some gripes about it. I noticed in the another thread that some one was looking at acti and axis cameras. I looked at axis they didn't have anything that really made me go "Oh?" I did however notice that ACTi has the E46 (3 MP) series. Which I like the look of over their other series. I was looking at the 3MP...and I do indeed have "complicated lighting" (as discussed in my video clean up thread) They also have B/Ixx series coming out in a few months. Then they have the E44 (2MP camera) which are the same as the swann cameras The pricing isnt that bad for the cameras or their dedicated nvr, but the main question is...would it really be worth the switch? Is the quality, picture, and detail going to be that big of a difference?
  14. I would have no issues running it but you can bet your self im not going to put it on just a computer. Im going to put it on a server class box, built to be stable. Ironically I would also have no issue putting it on a highend workstation class laptop, but its cheaper to build a server. The only other issue that bothers me with BI is if it was coded for 64bit they could lower their over head used by roughly a quarter to half, increase stability, have better memory management and potentially leap ahead of the competition simply due to the fact there is no one out there really putting out 64 bit camera apps. this is something that needs to be addressed by all manufacturers....STOP CODING LEGACY CRAP! GET WITH THE TIMES PEOPLE
  15. Pros: Support Bang for buck Stability Supports 8 cams Cons: MD is great but overly sensitive. Little noisy Cameras are not the best quality (they are good but could be better) Im maxed out camera wise I think I could spend a little but more money and get some cameras that can deal with my "complicated lighting" that are higher resolution that could better identify the douche bags that live around me. with out spending 1000+ per camera

  18. That's good to know. That makes me think the machine I spec'd above might actually do 8 cams/6144 @ no less than 20 FPS...Does bi do motion detection? or are you relying on the Costco cams for that?
  19. This is what I was told by maxicon when I inquired about BI. He does admit this is theory and not necessarily fact...but it seems logical BI displays all the cameras all the time, while Aver only displays the ones you select in the matrix. Also, I believe the Aver always has done direct to disk recording, but that's a hard thing to verify. Running BI in direct to disk mode may improve CPU closer to the Aver usage. After observing these differences, I posted this theory at cam-it, and someone else requested direct to disk recording based on it, so the results indicate there's some truth to it. Also, Aver's a big company, this software supports a bunch of their systems, and they've been working on it for years now. It may have a more efficient codec, allowing lower CPU use. BI's not as mature, though it has lots more features.

  21. Ill price out what I was looking at Super Micro Bare Bones Open box version Xeon-E3 1240 Ivy Bridge 16 GB ECC Memory Open Box version Just add Harddrive of your choice. Gonna need a POE switch. Im partial to cisco products especially cause they make a quiet switch with no fan. If you don't care how loud the switch is you can get a 3550 for about 120.00 but they are loud! and if you want gigabit prepare to pay a penny for it! Here it is its the only fanless more than 8 port cisco makes. SF200-24P (only 12 POE) Just add Harddrive of your choice. [Note: This is a server class machine, there may not be windows 7 drivers for it and the win 2008 drivers may not run under win 7. I have copies of Server 2008 so this was a non issue for me] This is what I was going to build...until I learned that apparently this may not be big enough to run BI on 8 cameras @ 1080p / 6122K / 20-30 FPS Which prompted my question of why in the hell is BI so processor intensive vs other vms and pc based nvr...never got a real solid answer on that other than maturity. Im not bashing bi in any way shape or form, just trying to figure out why some of this software is thousands of dollars which makes BI sound like something billy mays would be selling on late night tv...LOL. I would love to run bi, im going to actually install it on my pc and see how it does. this will give me a baseline if I need a bigger box!
  22. I don't expect any support out of HikVision, as the cameras are simply oem cameras. I wouldn't expect some random camera to work with the swann nvr even though it supports onvif. Im just curious of the acti line vs these swann 2.1 Costco cams. There is a cost difference in the cameras for sure, but is the cost difference worth it?
