  1. There's no modem involved, with the Linksys WAG54G, there's a RJ11 connection for the dsl line, which connects to the dsl filter. Yes it does have PPPoE, but i cant use it because there's no place to enter your username and password.

  2. Hi Guys, need help with router connection. Having real problems, every router we've used, we've had the same problem, the adsl link just goes down after a few weeks/months. We started of using the DG834 from netgear, after a few weeks, the dsl connection goes down and the only way to get it up and running is if you power it down and back up, obviously i dont want the customer pulling out the wrong connection so i have had to go to the customer and do it myself, when i checked it, the dsl link was down. So i contacted netgear's absolutely crap support in India with no luck. After reading a couple of posts i decided to go with the Linksys WAG54G router, to test it i installed it at my house, and after 2 weeks of perfect web browsing, it packed up (DSL link went down), so im trying to figure out why its doing this. Ive had the same problem at my customers place, regardless of the the ISP, we usually use BT for those who are in the UK. Take a look at the screen setup link below

We have to use PPPoA, because we're given a Username and password, the ISP provides a USB which we just throw away, because theres no firewall prottection and they're USB modems which means they're crap. Any comments/suggestions will do, must be doing something wrong for this to occur! Thanks for the support in advance

  3. Thanks for feeback so far. Rory 500metres is approx 1600feet, im looking into the NVT equipment now, not to sure the performance of those COP products, we've used those 4 video over 1 cat5 units, loads of places without any problems, but not for this sort of distance. C7 thanks for that infor, think im gonna stick to UTP CAT5. Baywatch, what manufacturer for those passive baluns where they? Anyway, cables should be in within a couple of weeks, ill update you on any more obstacles! Gonna use a GV800 to get those PTZ cameras connected up first, with Merit Lilin domes, but looking to upgrade to GV1000 once all other cameras are done.

  4. Hi Guys, need your advice. Ive got a job to provide security for a local football club. There will be 5 outdoor ptz cameras mounted on poles, for these cameras, the club is getting civil guys to run some cables underground (approx 1/2metre underground) using corrugated pipe. We're going to provide the cables in drums. Now here's where im unsure, these cameras are going to be nearly 500metres away from the club house, would it be ok to use CAT5 cable, would it matter if its UTP or STP?

What do i need to watch out for whilst running these cables, is 500m to far to transmit a video signal, im looking at COPs twisted pair products:

    http://www.copsecurity.co.uk/acatalog/Cop_Passive_System__600m__16.html

The CAT5 cables are only going to be used for telemetry and video signal, they already have electric cables near the designated areas and i checked with the manager and they are on the same phase as the DVR and other internal cameras. This is probably one of the largest jobs we've done and would appreciate any feedback and support you guys could provide. Thanks

  5. Rory i think it uses only 2 pairs, orange and green. Im pretty sure about that, because i remember doing an installation and not connecting the blue and brown to the patch socket and it worked fine, but that was connecting one comp direct to another, should be the same with router. Another way i know is that when you make a crossover over cable, you only switch the orange and greens pairs around- transmit and receive. Best way is to try it out, i think the structure of a rj45 socket is:

    1. white/orange

    2. Orange

    3. white/green

    4. Blue

    5. White/Blue

    6. Green

    7. White/Brown

    8. Brown

Crossover is the same except 1= white/green, 2=green, 3=white/orange, 6=orange, cut the blues and brown and see if you get any signal.

  6. kaysadeya, i think you're right there, my fault, that model is actually a 30fps. Thanks for correcting me. Our supplier over here advertises the dvr as "50fps", i think they mean "50pps" as in the tech manual, because correct me if im wrong, 2pps is equal to 1fps, it fooled us to when we first bought it too. Regardless, i think it is a lot better than the 777 model, however, it's a lot cheaper here too, i mean its its actually cheaper than the 777 model!

  7. We used quite a few of the AVtech777 without webserver, and had many PSU problems. Personally i think it is a very cheap unit, and although initially i thought it was quite good, after a few installations, we got so many phone calls saying the DVR is busted. Everyone we checked, we found out it had a PSU problem, so had to spend an extra £20 on a 12V PSU. My supplier tells me AVtech have fixed the PSU problem, but i prefer the argus model because not only is it 50fps, you get a remote control, built in web-server, loops, and they use a decent PSU (Lishin electronics), fairly cheap, but they use the same PSUs for many branded laptops. Hope some of this helps

  8. WE've had tonnes of problems with that 777 model, mostly PSU problems, very very cheap quality, and its only 18fps, their webserver is a big seller though. I'd use the SCW-16 model instead, for a little more, you get reliability, we've never had major probs with this model, built in ethernet card and comes with a remote control, only thing i dont like is the compression quality. They've also released a new model with CDRW which is quite impressive for the price, and ideal for low end jobs. Hope some of this helps

  9. We use quite a lot of their Intruder alarm equipment, especially the wireless gear- Class X|, we found it to be one of the best, excellent support and never had major problems with the components. I went to see their Dinion range a few months back, beautiful pictures, and they had their own sort of day/night technology which i was impressed with, only problem was price, they were talking over £160 for the basic body colour camera. One feature which attracted me to using it though was the up the coax configuration, which would be ideal for larger installs. Not to keen on the Divar, nothing special for the price they are charging, but then again i never looked at it properly.

  10. Lol, squale, using the GV-Relay or GVIO, i think the water idea could be possible!, Seriously you get bears and deers, dont think any camera would deter them, upload a pic if you ever do catch a bear! Try to find some sort of high frequenccy sound device which deters large animals, you could probably use the geo to trigger it on motion!

  11. yes thats correct, you'll get 30X4= 120 fps. yes same with 6 cams you'll get 20fpsX6=120, dont see the need to record around the clock though, motiion is fine. 5- 7.5fps is used in commercially. 30fps for domestic use is not necessary, i would use the smart function and record motion, you'll get more storage space, why would you want to record all day, you'll also find it harder to search for an incident because you've got so much recorded video!, thats some of the complaints we had from domestic customers!

  12. Squale, 50fps is industry standard, i think geovision the GV800-8 way is actually 100fps when you use PAL recording format and 120fps using NTSC recording. Im guessing you're using PAL, if you're recording on motion, geovison will use a feture called SMART. so the 100fps will be split according to how many cameras you're using. e.g. if 8 cams are connected and only 4 cams are picking up motion, then the system will record 4 cams at 25ps each (25X4=100fps) if additional cameras pick up motion say 5 then each cam will record at 20fps (20X5-100fps)

I THINK It only allocates a maximum of 25fps per cameras, so you wont need to reecord beyond that, remember 25fps= real time, so recording beyond that would be unecessary. If you only have 2 cameras and you are recording round the clock (constant recording) both cams will be recording real time at 25fps, as you add cameras it will begin to split the 100fos equally, so 8 cams will be recording at 12.5fps each. But recording round the clock is unnecessary, we always set our systems on motion. Hope some of this helps and i havent confused you!

  13. Squale, if you have the manpower to build PCs, then i say geo is an excellent system. A year ago i wouldn't have touched geovision, i looked at it like a gadget more than a surveillance system, we were reluctant to start building pcs, but it is really an excellent system for features etc, and for the price i think its a really powerful system. We started getting demand for 50fps+ dvrs, and unless you're willing to spend £3000+ for a standalone, i really think this is where geovision can come real handy. Its quite easy to use too, only thing they haven't worked on is one-touch cd-burning. Only problem we had initially was a lack of pc experience, and using the right components, there's a lot of nitty gritty you need to know before you build them, i.e. fans, system reboot etc.

Another thing with them if the free software upgrades, you can offer your customers something literally every month, and make a quick buck out of it too!

  14. Just wondering if Geovision cards are by far the BEST and most POPULAR PC DVR cards available?

I just brought a brand new Geovision DV800-8 card for $350, is this a good deal? it is the one that has the breakout cable on it...

I was toying with going with a standalone DVR system but I see the standalone systems don't have nearly the same amount of features provided in the PC DVR Geovisions systems...

I hope I made the right choice!

i must say, your supplier either ripped you off by seliing you a dodgy geovision card, or you got the best deal, just to confirm a GV800- 8 way for $350 USD, man thats cheap!

check out this link to check if its a fake, did you buy of a reputable supplier?

  15. So what would you need? i have the following options:

    - RFC 1483 Bridged

    - RFC 1483 routed

    - RFC 2516 PPPoE

    - RFC 2364 PPPoA

    - Bridged mode only

my ISP has given me a username and password and a usb modem ( using the linksys instead of the USB modem). Reason i ask you is because with the dg834g netgear router, we havent been entering the static IP, we just select "get dynamically from ISP" even though we have been given a static ip, same with dns server. the ip does not change, but i wonder, could this be the reason why the dsl signal keeps on dropping every now and then?

  16. Again, i suggest reading some more of the threads in this topic, try this:

we've picked up tonnes of tips for geo systems from some of the guys on this forum. so far, i would say you have a perfect motherboard and processor for the job. We're using the same memory, but for a gv650 build, for gv800, try the professional kingston range or corsair twinx was recommended by dvr_expert and has excellent performance. use 2X256DDR rather than 1 512 stick, you'll get better performance. I've never seen the need for high end graphic cards, go with a good brand i.e. saphire ati series, also make sure it supports direct draw overlay so you can use fullscreen mode. we've even used the cheaper sapphire ATI Radeon 9200SE 128MB for some of our older gv800 systems with good results. is it for home use or are you providing installation for a customer?

  17. Think you're right, the wag54G has a dsl rj11 socket connection, the other one has a wan connection, so you'd need an additional dsl modem. Thanks for clearing that up. Whats the difference between pppOA and pppOE, and why is it with the pppoA option, you can't enter the static IP youve been given by your ISP??

  18. Hi Guys,

What's the difference between the 2 linksys router, except you have to pay £30 more for the second one!

Whats the difference and which one would you use to connect a dvr to?, ive purchased a couple of the second ones, with good results just wondering why im paying £30 more

  19. We can run wires so thats not an issue, been there done it, youd be amazed at how we got wires run in this 1940 concrete home with barely any attic !

Rory, same here, we've had some real cable running miracles! actually we've had some bad ones too, we were working for a major client couple months back, one of my engineers was running alarm cable through suspended ceiling, anyway, he slipped of his ladder and grabbed onto the ceiling tile frame, ripping down about half the suspended celiing! It only toook us a couple of hours to sort out, but was a real pain!

Yea looks like your sorted for issue1, for issue2, you can use a web based e-mail site check out (www.mail2web.com). You can use the web based on the second comp. Only problem is if you open outlook express on the 1st comp, it'll download the e-mail of the server so you wont be able to check them again from the web based email site on the second comp. Mind you, you could ignore outlook altogether and use the internet based site for both comps. Hope some of this info helped
