Those are no good. they mostly support low res analog. If you want to reuse your coax cable you have now...look TVI or CVI systems from hikvsion or dahua. They are cheap and easy to swap out. Tell the contractor that you want at a minimum 720p (not TVL) or 1080p Dont settle for low resolution DVR/cameras that they are offering you. Get more bids, talk to others..these guys are selling old gear. The second unit will allow HD ip cameras but you will have to replace the cables.

There are new 4mp and 2mp cameras from hikvision that are superior to these, particularly in low light / night. I get very good lowlight/ir night vision performance with these... You must have lots of ambient light or using settings that will result in lots of motion blur for moving objects...

I have never said 720p is junk. I said analog D1 is junk and that your company sells junk since they only make analog. Assessing image resolution quality is subjective? Did you not watch the video? with one you can read the numbers with the other your cannot..there is NOTHING subjective about it. Explain how the higher res cameras produce a better image? WE ARE NOT BLIND. Have you ever held a 1080p camera in your hand? I doubt it. My suggestion is to walk down the block and pick one up from hikvision.

After doing some more research I was leaning toward buying that (the top one, Q-see you mentioned) with 8 additional dome cams and am going to place that order now. It will come out to a little over 3k for the package and like you said you get that assurance when you buy from Costco. And yeah, the info that other person posted is totally wrong. LOL! First of all, omnivision is not the only supplier of sensors. Second, have you even bothered to look at the youtube videos? have you ever compared 1080p camera to a 720p camera? Please explain why the image is clearer in the 1080p camera if everything is the same. Something must be different. Right? Please explain the difference otherwise anything else you say is pointless.

All this nonsense about cpu load and heat makes me laugh..the camera is designed for this load. The image sensors are not the same. One produces a 720p image, the other a 4mp image... A video is worth a million words. He can rant and rave otherwise but the videos prove he is lying. Its has, but required good quality cameras and more importantly tight frames...it was never possible to get a good overview that contained detail with analog. There is absolutely no reason to be using low res analog in 2015.

Cabling distance is not the function of U$. NTSC/PAL signal from analog camera can go over 100 meter easily. It is rugged itself, whether others are rugged or not. U$ 10 dollar was to be priced due to market force. You do not need to blame or dis-respect. They are not Junks. No distributor or Manufacturer carries million pieces of Junk. They are not stupid. Analog is not any more rugged than IP or cvi/tvi . Like ALL other electronics the manufacture matters. An image from a 10 dollar analog camera is completely worthless unless the subject is within a few feet or you have a zoom lens...utter rubbish....

AHD/cvi/tvi are all generally transitional technologies...if the cable is already there its a great improvement..but IP is ideal....and has several advantages like POE, SD card recording in the camera, no need to homerun each camera, lots of options, higher resolutions when needed, recording to multiple network locations at once without a direct line back, easily adaptable to many PC based VMS options.. In very large complexes, there is a cost advantage to HD over coax tech because the runs can be much longer without additional switches/extenders..

One of the good things is that analog cameras, whether to be 900 TVL or 480 TVL are to be supported by any DVR. As said, its recording resolution is D1, which means the DVR is relatively new and likely to support H.264. "supported" and actually seeing a benefit are two different things... D1 is NOT relatively new..lol.. There is no "good thing" about D1 analog...just as there is no "good thing" about a crt TV or monitor...at least not in any modern country.

Seems that people tend to choose wireless security system for apartment complex. But one thing to keep in mind that despite not needing a data transfer cable, wireless cameras still require a power source, ie. some adapters or batteries are needed. What's more, increased risk of signal loss or interference would affect the recording sometimes. I have never seen a wireless system installed in a commercial building. Its improper and should not be done. There is no reason proper cabling cannot be run.

TVI and CVI are readily available, cheap and have lots of camera choices...new installs should be IP (for most applications, that the very least run ethernet and use baluns so the system can be easily upgraded in the future)..these are transitional technologies.

850~900 TVL are for recent analog cameras, priced below U$20 at most, but with its quality a lot improved. You have D1 -DVR already. Just buy and plug new analog cameras. Why spending money? If you go for HD, then you have to buy everything new, including HDD and decent monitors. You dont have to buy new hard drives or new monitors for hd, lol...that makes no sense at all. sunnykim is making lots of assumptions about the size of the current drive and its compression technology...maybe the old system was not h.264.... 900 tvl cameras will not help if the DVR does not support it... For 400 dollars you can have 8 cameras, a dvr, and large hard drive...and lifetime return policy! Most of the cheap cameras are junk.. Still laughing about needing new monitors though, made my night... Side note here in the US most folks are using 1080p monitors..through they are obviously NOT required for an HD camera solution...

what will be PC spec and cost? 300-500 with full warranty for an i5-i7 haswell pc from dell (optiplex 7020/9020 from the dell outlet)...Still cheaper than a synology nas + licenses (you need the more expensive units that dont have low fps ratings)...particularly if you want a unit that can display the live video feed.

The newer boxes are NVR's and only work with ip cameras...a single ethernet cable transmits data and power (POE)... You will need to provide more info...what ddns service are you running? did you properly set it up? Screen shots..

You did not damage your DVR because you unplugged it...rather moving the dvr likely caused damage to the disk...replace the drive..that is the most common failure...pull the drive out and see if the unit boots and displays anything...if you purchased the unit from costco, simply return it, they have a lifetime return policy..
