  1.

Was this an added cable to the mid-point traveler cable(reel type) or added on its own at mid-point.

And approx. cost, just the cable part, not cameras or setup of those.

Elevator company has to run any cables and were not keen on the idea of adding a wire.

Elevator company charged customer $8000 (added on its own at mid-point.)

    for 2 cabins

    ThyssenKrupp Elevator want $20000

Elevator installation and repair..now that is a racket...that is where the real money is ...

  2. Well, the issue is the camera that will be wireless will be away from the house on a post. The only option would be wireless or to trench it in.

Pretty much most of the wired nvrs can have both wireless and wired tho?

The NVR doesnt care if its wired or wireless. It just needs an ip address.

In general match the cameras to the NVR manufacturer.

  3. Hi, does anyone make a nvr that can be all wired with a wireless cam as well? Would be nice for the wireless one to actually work past 50 feet.

My budget is 2k maybe? (4 cams, 1 wireless, 8 ch dvr, wire)

Although I'm pretty flexible with it. I'll pay for what I need.

    Vivotek? Acti?

Yes you can use a wireless camera with a wired NVR...but you are WAY better off paying someone to run the cable in the wall for you. Wireless is a waste of time.

Stay away from acti...there are tons of great affordable options..look at hikvision and dahua...lots of threads on this.

  4. Why do you jump to the conclusion that you were conned because you are missing a cd? Makes no sense to me.

You were conned though by purchasing a 960h system in 2016. You should be looking at 1080p minimum. Even 720p would be a significant improvement. You need to return that unit and do some more research.

  5. Boogie maybe you should edit your post and instead of saying "silly manner" change it to-

" conceited, unknowledgable, hasty, ill thought and non -productive manner"

Besides focusing on the wrong area of his problem , the OP is focusing on the wrong part of Boogies reply.

Quite honestly I'm surprised at Larry's lack of support to a long time contributor over such a petty grievence.

Goes to show that Political Correctness is alive & well. "Passive aggressive" - laughed my arse off.

+1...could not have said it better myself.

  6. I agree. Being called "silly" is not a proper response to a question no matter how many times it has been asked.

No one called anyone silly. All that was said is that he is going about it in a "silly way" big difference. Are we all in third grade here? Everyone is looking for an excuse to be offended and complain to mods. They need to man up and take the proper advice that was given.

Let's be honest here. Saying someone is approaching something in a "silly" manner is a passive aggressive way of inferring they are silly. We're not all in third grade but, I agree, someone still is.

No that is not the case and others agree with me. Its only offensive if you are looking to take offense. To many super fragile folks in this day and age. Read his post again, and you will see a pompous member who "believes" a bunch of nonsense. Remember this is a person who could not be bothered to do this http://lmgtfy.com/?q=security+camera+invisible+ir or this http://lmgtfy.com/?q=security+camera+hide+ir the latter of which would yield this website in the first result, then has the gall to tell us he did "more than a quick google search"...Please. The fact that the user contacted the mods because he felt so offended speaks volumes. Maybe there should be a safe space on the net for folks like him...

  7. I agree. Being called "silly" is not a proper response to a question no matter how many times it has been asked.

  8. Knowing absolutely nothing about security devices or perimeter security I looked for a forum where I could ask a simple question and the response that I received was arrogant and insulting not a rant.

I thank you for the advice that there is a reason why there almost no cctv cameras with 940nm IR because its weak and pointless in almost all cases. Now I would like to find out if there is any way to cover the requirement I have in mind.

I do take offence when I receive the sort answers in the form that you offered. Good manners cost nothing. I did a more than quick Google search on the subject without finding the answer to my question other than the strange advice that to place notices where one sets up CCTV. I will now look for a security consultant who will offer a solution to my requirement which is to set up covert CCTV.

You did not do a google search. Please dont lie here. If you did a basic search you would find your answer. Heck, its been discussed on this forum multiple times.

    "consultant" lol...

  9. There is absolutely no point in behaving in an abusive and insulting manner. I asked what I thought was a technical question and I thought that a forum such as this was the place to find an answer. I fail to see how that makes me simply wrong and going about this in a silly way.

Of course thieves operate during the day and of course they go by the property and scope it out first and of course I recognise that they can see a camera simply when there is no IR?

As for stating, "You can mess around with external ir in 940 but you are wasting money time and effort." I'm obliged to say I have no idea what you mean.

I would hope that there is such a thing as a CCTV camera that can be concealed by day and by night because that will give the forces of law and order a better chance of capturing a likeness and bringing the thieving scum who consider that they have the right to take what they like from who the wish to justice.

There is absolute no point in acting in an arrogant manner. Your entire response to my question was an arrogant "I believe" rant when you obviously have NEVER installed a camera in your life and thus know nothing about perimeter security.

There is a reason why there almost no cctv cameras with 940nm IR..its weak and pointless in almost all cases.

Dont get offended so quickly. This is not a college campus. Stop playing victim and act insulted when someone tells you your idea is silly. This is not an internet "safe space". The advice dispensed on this forum is free, you dont get to dictate how polite anyone has to be to you. You didnt even bother doing a quick google search on the subject, just want to get spoon fed a how to.

  10. I believe that it is impossible to create absolute security and that a thief always exists that is capable of accessing a property.

I don't believe that CCTV deters thieves and so I would like to ensure that they will be apprehended and a camera that exposes its presence is of no use to me because it is likely to be disabled. So, does a camera exist that does not expose its presence when it is dark?

You are simply wrong and going about this in a silly way. Do you thing thieves dont operate during the day? Do you think they dont go by the property and scope it out first? Do you think you cant see a camera simply because there is no IR? The camera is still visible. You can mess around with external ir in 940 but you are wasting money time and effort.

  11. I want to install a security system but have been told that the camera's position can be exposed by the lights that emit from the LRDS. Is it true that they can be seen as a circle of pink lights and if so what can be done about it?

Why do you want to hide it?

  12. Daryl, do you honestly think that folks installing IP cameras in their homes have to worry about a tech savvy hacker tapping into their network by disconnecting a camera? if so you are an idiot. Your advice to use analog cameras in 2016 is simply wrong and foolish. The concern should be focused on securing the NVR from outside attacks. It sucks when people like you deliberately mislead folks and point them to inferior products. Now go put on your tinfoil helmet.

  13. Hi, Would there be any reason not to run a power cable and take of at certain points power for using WiFi repeaters, using this method you should have no signal loss, nor have problem with regulation (LV/MVoltage) 1 repeater placed in a good location may be used for more than 1 camera and as a second consideration WiFI may have other uses for the owner, any long runs use cable when it suits it may be better than running cables due to losses in the cable

This is a dumb idea. Wifi is not a good solution for cameras. You have a misunderstand of IP cameras and POE. There is NO signal loss as long as the cable is 100 meters or less (many have gone much longer). If you have never installed cameras before its better to hold back improper advice like this.

  14. There are other VERY severe deficiencies with the arlo system aside from having to replace the batteries. First, they cannot display video on monitor 24/7 or for any length of time because the batteries would drain. Second, they dont get any pretrigger recording because the camera relies on the pir sensor to turn it on. You actually miss some recording. Third, hefty perpetual monthly fees to store any decent amount of recordings. Its cheaper to hire someone to pull wire and install a system in the long run. Forth, its wifi. The arlo should never be used.

  15. Plz avoid Lorex like a plague - they are cheap plastic toy and won't survive long in an outdoor environment. I am not sure about Dahua but the brands preferred by the pros here are generally Avigilon, Axis, Hikvision and the like.

Stop making stuff up. Lorex sells rebranded dahua. They are not all plastic -even if they were, there is no reason to believe plastic is any worse than metal outdoors. Costco also has a lifetime return policy.

Dont buy the dahua off newegg. At least not at 150. That is authorized distributor pricing not newegg third party seller pricing. Keeping doing more research.

  16. Ah ok, that sounds ideal. I honestly had no idea, the descriptions aren't at all descriptive on amazon, it doesn't say anything about that. I think I'm going to have to google a bit more like you said. Maybe when I'm less tired! I do appreciate your help, thank you.

Edit: having read more questions and answers from manufacturers on Amazon, the ones I'm reading are saying they do have to be directly connected to the NVR and not just run off a PoE switch. Something to do with requiring a higher voltage than normal. Maybe you can link me up to a model that doesn't require direct connection for comparison?

You are misunderstanding or the manufacture you are looking at is not using true 802.3 poe-dont use junk camera brands...start reading. Again, this is basic ip camera stuff and done everyday.

  17. I've seen systems that come with say, 4 cameras, and each camera has it's own connection on the back of the main unit (camera 1/2/3/4). Not sure how this would work without a direct connection to each port, or am I just looking at the wrong type of product?

Connecting to the back is optional. Some NVR's only have a single lan port. With either type you connect the NVR to the lan and use a separate poe switch to power and transmit data to the NVR. This is basic IP camera knowledge that is why I suggest you spend more time learning about the cameras/technology before spending your money.

  18. Hi all. I know a lot about computers, but not a lot about cameras! So I'm looking for some help. I'm looking for PoE outdoor day and night cameras (at least 720p, 1080p preferred), one must have a night time IR range of 20 meters or more, the other 10 meters is fine, but if the better is not too expensive I'll get 2 the same. They also need the ability to record to a NAS drive over a standard network.

I have looked at complete NVR systems but would need 100m shielded cat5e to go with it which makes it too expensive really as each camera requires a direct connection into the main unit, so I'd like to utilise the network I already have and record to a NAS, preferably raspberry pie with USB drive, which I can set up a standard samba share on, but I can get something else if necessary. Any advice at all would be a great help as I feel a bit lost. Descriptions are not very descriptive! They don't say what the cameras will record to.

You do not need a homerun connection to record to an NVR. That is the beauty of network cameras. Start reading and learning or you will end up buying junk.

  21. There are literally numerous DVRs that are quite good. However, we believe the top most ones are TiVo Roamio/ Roamio Plus/ Roamio Pro, DirecTV Genie, Magnavox TB560HP/F7 ,and Dish Hopper. We like them because functionality and compatability features are simply the best here. TiVo Roamio series provide the best support. If compatability is your main concern, you may go with Magnavox.

    Hello,

I would like to install 2 PTZ camera's at the front and rear of my property with 2 internal dome's ground floor and 1st floor, 1 IR bullet at rear and a IR camera inside of my garage.

Ideally I'd like to buy a system complete but it's looking like I'll have to build my own system.

I was looking at an 8ch Hikvision DVR, connected to internet with at least 2tb of storage with minimum of 1080p playback.

I looked at the Swann kit's but was put off by online reviews and we use Hikvision stuff at work at it seems good but I don't know any specs of it

Can anyone recommend a decent DVR as this is what I would like to buy first, thanks!

This is what happens when a "smart bot" does a drive by on a forum. Tivo lol.

  22. Hello all...so as the subject states, I'm starting my first surveillance rodeo and need a bit of guidance.

I do some volunteer IT work for a pet shelter and they have had a few break-in attempts recently and want some surveillance.

Budgets are tight, and I've been asked to keep it under $1000. Four cams would probably get the job done, with at least one needing to be outdoors.

By reading more reviews than I care to remember, I've reached the conclusion that the all-in-one packages you'll find at Costco/Sams/etc are junk, so I'm avoiding those brands.

I'm not sure if I should just build a pc on the cheap with a decent HDD, buy something like BlueIris and piece it together that way, buy an actual NVR and build it out with an HDD and cams, or try and find a decent package that at least half the reviewers can agree doesn't suck.

As for the cams, I've seen recommendations here for coax, and also for cat5...not sure which direction is best.

Dahua and Hikvision seem to be recommended frequently here, are they rather similar, or does one excel in a certain area?

I'm also most likely ignorant enough with the subject matter to not know what I don't know...if that makes sense in a meta-cognitive way...so if I've failed to mention important details, I'll be more than happy to elaborate.

I'm not TOTALLY helpless, and once I have a better idea of what equipment to pursue I'll probably be ok. I just don't want to waste their money, they do great work on a paupers budget, and I'd feel terrible installing a garbage system.

Thank you for any guidance, and sorry once again for another 'help the noob' post.

The ip systems at costco from lorex and swann are not junk. They are mostly lorex rebrands dahua and swann rebrands hikvision. With costco, if you EVER have a problem, you can return the entire system.

  23. I have verified that one can in fact simply re-load the initial snapshot taken prior to actually starting the Windows 7 VM to reset the number of days to another 90. Microsoft allows this. The VM of Windows 7 specifically states ("Desktop Background of Microsoft instructions during Windows 7 VM use") that this is an approved method by them, to re-extend the Windows 7 VM. More details:

What does that have to do with licencing of dual boot?

There has been no significant change to the licencing or the iso in the past year.
