  1. I thought about this a bit more. The slow vnc performance is a function of the fat Geovision control client. I minimized the GV software, opened IE on the host computer, pointed it at 127.0.0.1 (fought with stupid active X controls) and got the web based playback running fairly well over my mobile phone. This is a good work around. Thanks I'm still interested in anyone's experiences with encoders.

    too many DVRs.....head will explode!

I have a PC card based system and I would not recommend it unless you like to tinker with computers. Adding in PC config details, OS stability issues and upgrades to the mix, etc isn't worth the hassle for most people.
  3. No, I want playback via Android. Everything else is an attempt to achieve that goal. Live view I have. I'm not sure how you think a collection of analogue cameras is going to send a video stream to a Synology Surveillance Station. IP only. So, I need an encoder to produce a stream the Synology can read. No idea where you got that kind of price, my unit was not nearly that pricey. Either way, I already own the Synology.
  4. Thanks. I can already VNC into the Geovision box, but that's very slow and awkward.
  5. but were is the storage to playback. I feel like we are going in circles here. Either the encoder needs to be able to save to a network share or ftp the files to a NAS, or I can use the synology NAS to monitor the encoder and have it store the video (some encoders only).
  6. That doesn't work because the Geovision uses a proprietary codec. No playback options under android. With an more main stream encoder I should be able to playback videos on the mobile. Good discussion, because sometimes I have to stop and ask myself,"OK why did I rule out x".
  7. Thanks, but playback is all I'm interested in. I understand that the encoder would need to store the video somewhere. I know I can use a Synology NAS if I need to.
  8. Ok, that was short lived. I don't see where the Aver allows remote playback from an Android phone and it will not ftp video to another server. It will ftp static shots only. The web based viewer looks IE based. Did I miss something?
  9. Interesting. I'm not sure how I missed the idea of a hybrid. (How is it that small hybrid can be cheaper than an encoder?). I'd still want to loop the video over to my Geovision system. This would allow that for 2 cameras, right? Thanks for the lead, time to pour over the specs.

    remote viewing issue

If it works localy, but not remotely, it is usually a port forwarding issue on the router. If it works for a while remotely but stops working remotely AND still works locally, then the router probably lost its configuration OR the IP address of the DVR moved, so the router can't forward to it anymore OR the router has a more complex configuration on port forwarding - like time of day or total bandwith allowed or some such thing. Does the router limit the bandwidth allowed? Say we take the dvrs and put it on a separate router and then all the computers on another one? Or is the cable modem/TWC (the isp) the bandwidth limiting agent, for lack of a better term? You probably are not hitting any ISP limit in just a few minutes. You'd have to check the router config to see if it is set to limit connections in some way.

    too many DVRs.....head will explode!

I think that for the average home user, there isn't that much to distinguish the various mid-level DVRs. BTW, remote viewing of live and recorded view from a smartphone depends entirely on what platform your smart phone is. I have a geovision system that I like. It has every feature I could imagine. I'm sure people with NUUO and Avermedia systems are probably just as happy. If you really want to know what distinguishes them, I'd download the manuals to each and see what they can do. I have to warn you that the manual to the Geovision system is 600+ pages.

    too many DVRs.....head will explode!

Oh, so many questions to ask you. Skip the PTZ. I have one and it is an expenisive toy. The basic functions are often the same, so the deciding factor maybe some of the less common requirements. How well lit is your environment? That will help you decide IP vs analog. (Low light, low cost and IP do not mix well) For remote access, do you need a mobile platform compatibiliy? Do you want to be able to live view or view recorded video also. Do you want to integrate any PIR alarms? If so, what action do you want? For example, with a Geovision (and others I'm sure), when you approach my house I get an interior chime and an email sent to my phone that include images from 4 of my cameras.

    ACTi with Android app

While the IP Cam Viewer app does not support it, you could check with the author. He has been very good about adding features.
  16. HAHA I ordered one of them from my distributor months ago and they never got any in stock. Need less to say I never got them. Weird. It took one google to find a place that "says" they have 4 in stock. OTOH, it isn't anyone I've done business with, so who knows if they really have any.

    Version 8.5?

Has anyone taken the plunge for the latest version? Is there anything compelling about it?

    Version 8.5?

A stable update from Geovision? Will wonders never cease? The thing I would dearly love (after a decent Android client) is the ability to have GV record video in a format other than their propriety codec. I could get around the no android client issue if their recorded video was viewable on android if pulled directly from the drive.

    quality of dome security cameras

I don't have any screen captures handy, but I can say that my CP-484 is probably the best camera I have. It handles back lighting very well and its low light abilities are very good. I do wonder if some of the less expensive brands have caught up - I have a CNB Mona Lisa dome that I tested and,if I remember correctly, it was pretty impressive for a lot less money.
  20. Thanks again for that video. I guess my only real question is why aren't a few of those home made boxes listed over in the for sale forum?
  21. Thanks. Wow that Raytec is expensive.

Geovision Scheduling for outgoing email reporting

What's triggering the emails? What version of Geovision? If you have motion detection triggering the emails, look under the Schedule setup to see if you can block out times when "Pager/email" is not enabled.
  23. I have an 8 camera Geovision system, that is serving me well except for mobile phone functions. GV has a fully functional Windows Mobile client set, with live view, PTZ control and playback. Unfortunately Windows as a phone platform is all but dead, so I've moved on to an Android phone. I use IP Cam Viewer to get live feeds from my GV and my non-integrated pet cam, but have no access to the recorded video. Well, I can VNC into the GV box to get recorded video, but you can imagine how slow that is. So, I think it is time to look into a new system. Who makes a DVR that does remote playback on the Andoird platform, allows for real time views on Android, PTZ control on Android, accepts Alarm inputs to trigger emails with attached images? The ideal solution would be a hybrid so I'm covered as I move toward IP cameras. Oddly, the only system I know that has a fully functional android client is the Synology diskstation. Of course it does not offer alarm inputs and I would need a network encoder to convert my alanlog cameras to IP.

DVR with remote playback for Android?

Thanks. I'm sure the Android client does not support remote playback. It is generally regarded as garbage. I use a 3rd party app for live view. Also, A-View requires GV 8.4 and I'm on 8.3 If the A-view client worked for me, I'd look at upgrading but that might also require a new PC. As far as I know the web client requires Active X and there isn't any of that on Android.

DVR with remote playback for Android?

Geovision is 8.3. All analog cameras. The CPU load is light on a 4 year old machine. I don't know if IP Cam Viewer will work for you with v8, but there is a free version to try. It uses the web server video streams.
